When I was young we had a PG from the US stay with us over summer. She laughed when she saw us having cornflakes at breakfast. I still remember her words - She said that if you see how much sugar goes into creating this, you will never eat it. It is healthier to eat ice-cream at breakfast rather than cornflakes. When my brother first went to the US, I saw this product called ‘I can’t believe it’s not butter’. I liked the name so out of curiosity I looked at the label to see what it is made of…. I almost dropped laughing when I saw it is the cheapest margarine or the baddest quality of dalda- the highest cholesterol inducing products. I laughed because my brother was earning more but eating worse food and the marketing was convincing him that this is the best! When my father had a heart surgery in the US, one of the first things we were taught was how to read food labels and the need to understand what they are pretending to say and what they are cleverly hiding. Sugar, sodium and salt levels, oils used … there are no guides for consumers to be able to clearly understand and comprehend what the product actually contains. And worse, the advertising creates misconceptions. These were my personal experiences that made me be vary of ads and careful about products. I still eat that biscuit and sometimes a coke. But, as Revant puts it, I know it’s an unhealthy choice so I am careful about how much I consume. Smita is right that ice cream awareness is low. As is that of most packaged products. Your ideas of making Home Science and Health and Nutrition compulsory is such a good one. Everyone should write to the Education Ministry about this. @Foodparma

Good one. With economic growth, we need to be extremely conscious consumers. We have legislation in this regard, that is, the Consumer Protection Act . There are consumer courts. However miles to go. We need huge consumer awareness .
@aosaeanor3 ай бұрын
In India it mostly depends on individuals to be aware & conscious of what they use & consume. Even if rules, regulations & laws exist as of these are archaic, have plenty gaps that allow for manufacturers to get away with wrong doings & if not that then there are corrupt officials n politicians that make wrong things possible . If Maggi had lead & there was public noise, suddenly all investigations disappeared and Maggi was back to business . A long time back there was a report & big news on Haldiram's manufacturing units effluent was coloring the soil yellow. That news died fast & seems even the internet was sanitized to remove the news. Coke had similar issues at its plant in India with people complaining of soil containation

Great work done Revant. People generally make faces when asked to read labels - taking the argument to the other extreme like "you want us to be in grocery store forever?" or like it was said in podcast "hawa khaayein phir?" Such a negative attitude even from the well to do people. And if nothing, they'll blame it on grocery stores or kirana wala to keep that product.
