They buy horses that are sent for slaughter due to old age and injury, horses that are not meant to be eaten so it is legal for them to be pumped full of antibiotics and whatever else due to not being a food animal. Yes and there is an easy food gathering called gleaning alot of folks do not even think about. Trees in most neighborhoods dropping fruit all over the ground. Often a homeowner is either elderly or can't use it all so ask to clean it up! Offer to trade those who garden with something you can do. Even when in an apt I grew in pots and now back in my own home? A years worth of garlic grown in pots during foot surgeries. I also can fruits and about to dehydrate all that garlic to grind into spice. I have all kinds of free fruit I have canned and trade for nuts. There is free seafood in local waters and clams abundant on our beaches...Now I intend to start harvesting what I can both in the water, in my garden beds I will have for next season etc. Even in apts one can grow salad pots, potato pots, herbs and berries....a deck or small area to set pots is all one needs to start. Anything you can grow at home is within your quality control. Those saying to go to fresh butchers and fresh fruit/veggie stands? We only have access to anything like this seasonally and don't live near a butcher shop. One can grow herbs inside and some veggies with grow lights. Its just getting started with whatever one can do. All my seeds are heirloom also.

The funny thing is: you probably don't know how olive oil has to taste - just as a reference point. You have really go to the source to taste the real deal and then go back to the supermarket. Probably none of the bottles sold there will do, since no costumer (except you) knows how it should taste. *Storytime*: we went to Venice by car 2 years ago. On the way back we stopped at a small farm. Wife tasted, was satisfied, bought a few bottles. The bottles didn't taste like the sample :| .. This year we went to Spain. We went into a Carrefour. I googled what their best brand was. Picked that. It was ok - How do I know? A friend brought a used Coke bottle full of oil from Turkey - which was probably the real deal. My wife was very satisfied. That Carrefour-bottle had maybe a fourth of taste-strength than that Coke-bottle.

going vegan or meat free is not the answear but just a form of extremism. Cutting meat completely can have a detrimental impact on your health. Limit your meat consumption to once or twice a week. Find a good meat source rather tgan going to supermarkets. There is an answear to solve the issue and surely it is not by cutting meat or becoming vegan unless you want to contract some deaseases later on like ashimoto deasease etc.

Having lived in Europe I just don't understand the public's reluctance to eat horsemeat, or the government's refusal to sanction it. Nothing wrong with it. Horses have a vegetarian diet and which makes for good eating, along with beef and venison. Is it just sentimentality or what?
@alexanderpasnl4 ай бұрын
It's so much better meat than pork or beef. I had a horse butcher in my neighbourhood. I love it, especially slowly cooked for hours. But it's very expensive and that is the thing from day 1 with this story that just does not add up for me. Horse meat is up there with the most expensive meat. In whole Europe when you leave a city or village, you probably see cows. There are pig and chicken sheds everywhere. I only see horses to be ridden. I have neven seen a horse breeder, breeding 1000s of horses for meat. It's way too expensive. But yet there was he scandal en millions of people have been eating horse meat without knowing... euh where did al those horses come from? 2 euro per kg?!? And how many kg that must have been to end up in millions MILLIONS of pizza's and other dishes. The other way around... then the story would have been more logical. That you pay a lot of money for horse meat and that you secretly get pork instead. But this whole story? I don't know, there is something fishy to it.
@healthyself79413 ай бұрын
It's not so much about horse meat being fine to eat, it's more about false advertsing, and food products being adulterated. In other cases the adulteration could lead to severe health problems, even death.
@BrownsdragonStudios3 ай бұрын
It's not about reluctance. Cattle meat costs more than horse meat. The companies were passing off cheap meat for more expensive meat so they can line their pockets with more money. This makes it a fraud. If they were honestly selling horse meat as horse meat, it would be a different story.

I have put a lot of effort into trying to understand the links between our diet and our health and consequently changed quite a few of habits related to food purchases and consumption. Being from Poland, I felt mortified when the Polish theme appeared in the documentary. Even though I have never been a consumer of such meat products, it's still outrageous that the authorities did nothing to restore some order, to ensure that such practices would not be feasible anymore, and ultimately punish the fraudsters. But once the olive oil theme popped up, it shook me to the core. I have always believed that us consumers can influence the food industry by choices we make. It's a very sad realisation that now we literally need to become detectives and that sourcing quality food requires painstaking efforts. On the other hand, just the fact that our governments subsidise the agri giants and treat small, sustainable farmers as a second category producers is atrocious.
