This week was powerful. I so appreciate the explanations you give us about the context. It helps so much more than just reading just the words. It helps to have fuller understanding and helps us to apply it today. Initially I thought ' oh this is for the Jewish Christians' but no, this is just as applicable for us in 2023. The world doesn't recognise who Jesus is anymore. So Hebrews teaches us that yes, He is still the most important voice to listen to. Can't help thinking of the hymn How Great Thou Art. Thanks Mike and Bryce.

So God chastises us on purpose? Are our efforts to live the gospel and find happiness not enough, he has to throw more wrenches in our plans to test and refine us? And then we'd better endure it well or we'll lose out on even more time and blessings? I was happy, I was patient, I was moving forward as best I could without the blessings I really wanted. Why take what peace I had found away from me? How am I supposed to get to a better place when I can't even get back to where I was? How am I supposed to continue to hope when this is where my hopes have lead me?

So tough. I appreciate you calling out the irony within the text. I (Mike) see contradiction and irony everywhere. Call it “tension” or “proving contraries” or whatever you like. To acknowledge it can be cathartic. I applaud you in your quest to find and live truth in your life despite the contradiction. I wish I had something more to offer, but I am with you in many respects. I do believe we try our best to live the truths we know and believe to be true, and despite this, we experience tragedy and setbacks. But, in the words of Mircea Eliade, the story/mythos/paradigm gives us something to hold to when everything else is absurd. My hat is off to you.

Speaking of ironies, true or false? So, basically, earth life is a continuous opportunity to experience no-win situations. The gift is in the recognition that it is through Christ that we get to choose our attitude as we navigate the difficult waters of life. It is our faith-based efforts that give us strength and peace to endure what other wise feels unbearable. This is why the Savior is my number one hero!!! Welcome to mortality.

Great thought… it probably depends on how we define “win.” To many of the authors of the Hebrew Bible, a good life was to live to see your grandchildren, living to an old age. As others added to the texts, the idea of an afterlife and resurrection helped them to try and cope with all the inconsistencies in the prophecies and expectations. With a resurrection and afterlife, the ironies of mortality are less absurd. Still, it’s a massive challenge. My experience has shown me that life is filled with ironies and contradictions. The Savior experienced contradiction on a massive scale. But everyone I know is dealing with them on some level. It’s “The Hero’s Journey”… all of us, as part of the mortal experience, enter “the abyss” and must deal with really difficult things. Through the power of the Savior, with his light and love, we will cross the threshold triumphant. That is my hope.

I have a question regarding the veil and our Savior and the temple....not sure if it’s appropriate to ask something relating to the temple in such a public setting.
