You better have a hell of a rig if you want to head into Silverton. I cleaned up a load of tractor batteries off the side of the hill coming into town there and I drove the tool crib for the job. My superintendent was in the cab with me and he literally kept his door cracked for the last five miles into town. We used a the lid off a tank that had blevi as a sled and used and air tug in the back of a f550 to get them cleaned up.

US-550 is a sporting road, Shawn, that's for sure. We cover it in more detail in Episode 69: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXIZWp3er-traM

I’ve taken my family to the Ouray, Silverton and Telluride area for 7 years in a row. It is a beautiful area to visit. Silverton is the least crowded. It definitely seems to be more people vacationing in this area every year. Maybe, they’re like us and enjoy getting away from the heat and humidity of the south. So, we just have to enjoy Colorado the best we can.

In our opinion, Steven, the San Juans -- and in particular Silverton -- are the best of Colorado. For a more in-depth look at Silverton see our Ep. 69 "Million Dollar Highway" kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXIZWp3er-traM .

I am getting ready to visit Colorado and I always start by watching your videos. Do you have a great Boondocking suggestions and places to visit along the road. Question: getting a city girl from back east I am often afraid of mountain roads. Can I get to Silverton without going down the million dollar highway (also known as the highway to hell)? I hope you see this post.
@GrandAdventure3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The only two ways into Silverton are via the MDH, or via the far worse jeep trail across Engineer Pass from Lake City: kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXIZWp3er-traM . However, the worst part of the MDH is just south of Ouray, so it's much less frightening to go northbound from Durango. Boondocking sites are somewhat sparse in that area, but we prefer the Sultan & Anvil Camping Areas in the video linked in this comment.

The story I heard regarding the origin of "The Million Dollar Highway"nickname for Route 550 is that a fellow once quipped that he wouldn't travel that road again for a million dollars. Having traveled the route three or four times I don't find it difficult to believe that version. I spent the first trip going north bound with both hands firmly gripping the steering wheel...a true white knuckle experience !! Thanks for taking me along on your adventures. Your videos are beautiful and informative...you make every trip look like a million dollars.

You're very kind, Mark -- thanks for watching! And now we've heard a third version of the name, all of them believable.

Whats the best place to boondock on highway 2 going toward Animas Forks. We will be there in a couple of days and "Thamnx Fer Sharin"
@GrandAdventure2 жыл бұрын
Honestly we've never looked on that side of town for ourselves. We've seen a couple of folks in various spots over there along CR-2, but when we're in Silverton we usually stay at the Anvil & Sultan camping areas northwest of town.

Hello: I’m planning my first boon docking RV trip to Taylor Park. I’d welcome any advice on how to find a good site. We are bringing trail bikes to ride.
@GrandAdventure4 жыл бұрын
David, the best advice that we can share is in our video Episode 6: Boondocking 101 kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioW1qGZ3Yq58kLs . While it's one of our earliest videos (and therefore lacks some of the production qualities of our more recent work), it explains in detail the process we go through ourselves to find a boondocking site. Have a wonderful trip!

Great video! How steep are the roads to get to Silverton? I pull a heavy trailer and haven't had it in the mountains yet.
@GrandAdventure6 жыл бұрын
Funny you should ask! We're in Silverton right now filming an episode on the Million Dollar Highway that will debut next month. They're steep but no worse than other Colorado mountain roads. Our neighbor just arrived from Ouray in a giant 3-axle diesel pusher. What freaks people out, especially on the stretch from Ouray to Silverton, is the narrow road with no guardrails and a sheer drop-off with zero room for failure. It's 10 miles of white knuckle driving, but if you're used to western mountain roads it's over-hyped IMO. It's also worse if you're southbound as you're on the outside edge along the drop.

Its June 6th and I’m headed there this weekend Overland camping for the first time. Looking for BLM areas! Any good place to locate them in Colorado?
@GrandAdventure5 жыл бұрын
Not sure we're following, Craig...just about everything east of Silverton is BLM, and dispersed camping rules on BLM in Colorado are pretty much the same as in other states. Maybe we're misunderstanding your question? Feel free to clarify and we'll do our best to help, and in any event have a great time! We'd imagine that much of the higher terrain is still snowed in pretty good.
