This song should have 10 million views. One of my favorites from Nightwish. So powerful. Beyond a simple song. It is an experience. Agree! No worries about PnP. Every song has a story or message at it's heart.

Great reaction! One of my top 6 Nightwish songs. Used to be top 5 but it got pushed down by Laternlight. Great job on picking up on the emotion. One of the more personal songs for Tuomas and the fans. An old song written by Tuomas when he was young. Inspired by the question what would you say if you knew you were going to die tomorrow. Glad you read what Tuomas had to say about the song. Tuomas often uses the dead boy as a symbol of the loss of childhood innocence and imagination that we experience as we grow into adulthood. When you hear dead boy or poet in his lyrics he is usually referring to himself. He also has a strong connection to the ocean and sees it as a place of peace and tranquility. A refugee from the modern world. You totally nailed the meaning in the lyrics, which isn't always easy to do with Tuomas's poetry. As you noted in this song Tuomas is saying that he no longer lives for himself or his friends but only for the music. He puts all his feelings into the music and his music is what gives his life meaning. He tries to make his life better but can never get back to the innocence of his youth. He wants to be loved but can't connect with people. He asks that they remember his music, not him, after he is gone. Thus a lonely soul, an ocean soul. The lyric “I live no more to shame nor me nor you.” is from one of Shakespeare’s sonnets, sonnet 72. Appropriately, this sonnet is part of a series about a poet who, feeling shame and worthlessness, wishes to be forgotten after death. Not sure this is still the mother of all Nightwish songs. It is from their 3rd album, Wishmaster and at the time it definitely was but Tuomas has gone on to write some even more personal songs like Poet and the Pendulum and Laternlight. Note that on the video wall behind the band the boy is holding up his arms to several swans. In Finnish mythology swans are the creatures that guide your soul to the afterlife.

Majestic - that was the right word not only for Emppus solo but the whole song. And for the Queen for sure. Nobody would be able to sing this song with such an emotion. Greetings from Germany

For most Nightwish songs research is not needed: many are open for interpretation (deliberately so I believe). BUT I would make an exception for 'Shoemaker', 'The Poet and the Pendulum' and maybe 'The greatest song on earth'. For example: for Shoemaker the lyrics and the video will have a much bigger impact (and make more sense) once you know who Shoemaker was and that he is the only human burried on the moon. Especially that last part of the song: it is a requiem.

This is one of the live songs of Nightwish that you would like to close your eyes to (like you did) and go on a journey, but as soon as they are closed you are afraid of missing something on stage and open it again immediately. I listen to this song very often as a studio recording, because it really allows me to close my eyes and move along with the notes.

THanks for the great reaction, and remember, not every reaction is about what you say, sometimes speechless says just as much. Kind Regards from the UK.

If you're talking about Amanda: she is projecting her own emotions quite often. And since "the song means what the song means to you" (words of Tuomas) , that is perfectly fine. Quite often you can read anything into a NW song, whatever is on your mind. It is one of the powers Tuomas has. But I don't t believe it was Tuomas' intended interpretation.
@ecbftl5 күн бұрын
@@vogel2280 Yes I was thinking of Amanda, and based on her interpretation I understand how she heard it that way. In a way it was Tuomas imagining and considering his own death and how he felt about his relationship to people and his musical legacy, though not necessarily as a suicide.
@vogel22805 күн бұрын
@@ecbftl Anyone is entitled to their own explanation of the song. So are you and so is Amanda. Mine is that he is mourning the the loss of his childhood, the boy Tuomas, that no longer exists (dead boy). He wrote this song just after NW exploded in popularity. The pressure to write new songs, even better than the last, was huge. He now had responsibilities to dozens of families that were relying of his succes, not to mention he now had a lot loose (created a kingdom). The burden was maybe a bit higher than he could carry at the time, but personally I don't see the indications of depression or suicide, but then again I'm no expert on the matter.

@@vogel2280 I do understand Tuomas feeling the loss of the inner child, and the effort to keep that sense of wonder and joy in your life. I have not known the band since the beginning, but respect the musical evolution Nightwish has had. Thanks for your perspective.

Tuomas, an Ocean soul, a Lonely soul and a Wonderful soul !! In my top 5 favorite songs by Nightwish. I have watched this concert and this live video countless times and cry every time. No other band with the exception of Within Temptation from Holland brings such emotions to me. I am and have been obsessed with them for over 15 years. Their is a book ``Nightwish every album, every song`` by Simon MCMurdo that I highly recommend. Another awesome reaction Adam!!

The Reddit article was right, but it did not provide much context. Tuomas wrote this song when he was 22(-ish), just after the bands popularity exploded. A couple of years ago he was a regular teenager and now all of a sudden he is the pivotal point a multi million dollar enterprise, with dozens of families relying on his success as a songwriter. Each new song must be greater than the last. And just as important, his dream is relying on his performance. The pressure to write those perfect songs is huge and in the meantime he is leading this traveling circus, the recordings and production. In a way he feels Nightwish cut his childhood short (or at least made him transition abruptly). In this song he is mourning the loss of his childhood innocence , the boy Tuomas, who no longer exists (Dead Boy), but a the same time he feels it is wrong to complain about it, since he is living his dream.
