Thanks. I didn't have much trouble doing it, but never really understood why it is practiced.

nice VDO. if you can show a practical Demo & then plot it on map/Ipad to see the ground track- its most appreciated. thanks

What if you fly by just keeping the intersection on the same part of the wing during the entire maneuver. If the intersection starts advancing in front of the wing, shallow the bank. If it starts falling behind the wing, steepen the bank. Won't this accomplish the same thing without having to worry about whether you are upwind, crosswind or downwind?
@jennifergray4628 Жыл бұрын
that kinda defeats the purpose of the maneuver: to learn how to adjust your bank angle in relation to the wind. you need to know this for when you're in the traffic pattern, plus if you just stare at how your point looks on the wing then you wont be paying attention to keeping your altitude or speed

At 800 ft will a high wing airplane like a C172 have the wings obscure the point at all? Thanks for the video, it clicked for me with your explanation, and using an intersection (with nice straight roads leading out) made me realize it is good for thinking about ground track, by dividing into quarters.
@kitbarton7700 Жыл бұрын
You need to fly far away enough from the point so that your wings don't cover it. If you are too close, yes they could block your view of it. This is another helpful way to help you maintain your distance.

Hello Jon thank you so much for the video I practiced these on my own during some solo time and I didn’t work out so well but then again I tried doing it at 2400 feet. I could never keep a point of reference (a barn) centered on my wingtip the barn kept “sliding back.” I presume this maneuver would work much better at a lower altitude?
@BLaymon0603 жыл бұрын
I always pick a point of reference large enough that covers my wingtip but can still see it off the sides of the wings so I know if I move to far away or close I can tell that's how I learned to do them

To keep within the +/- 10 it's airspeed goal, are you also having to adjusting the throttle each time you're turning into/out of the wind?
@fly8ma.comflighttraining1997 жыл бұрын
Nope, you're not "turning in and out of the wind" the wind is constantly acting upon the airplane similar to a boat moving down a river. Ground speed changes, airspeed stays constant with a constant power setting and holding altitude. You won't have to apply any changes to power unless you find yourself getting to high or too low (usually the result of starting the maneuver with a slightly high or low power setting). Safe flying out there! -Jon

First, I'm here, because I'm ramping up to taking my check ride. And, because, I really like your videos. After watching quite a view, I find your explanations really easy to understand. Your CFI Oral exam series is great. Thanks for putting up some really excellent content. Now to my question .... When on the furthest downwind end of the circle and starting to head upwind, the turn is a bit more into that turn, right? NOT a skid, right, or any type of crab, right? A skid seems horrible. Is it just that I should stay steeply banked a bit longer to turn a beyond or rather inside of the circle, but still flying a balanced turn? then as I round into upwind, roll out of the turn a bit. But the key is all turns are balanced right?
@kurtreber98132 жыл бұрын
All turns should be balanced/coordinated (no skids, no slips). Crabbing is OK, and inevitable, as you are turning relative to any wind. When turning from tailwind to crosswind (furthest downwind end of the circle), you have lots of groundspeed and will need a steeper bank to maintain proper ground tracking. As you go into crosswind, then headwind, you keep swallowing the bank until flying directly into the headwind, at which point you should be wings-level.

Is there a trick to finding the downwind? My instructor mentioned looking for which direction the clouds where moving. Guess I could pull up ForeFlight as well?

how do you determine where the wind is coming from?
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 Жыл бұрын
You can look at wind socks, lakes, trees, etc. to see where the wind is coming from.

Fly over the spot you are circling. Lets see how you do it 3 times at 500 agl. Most CFI's in USA dont know Flyover GRM. LOL..

can someone tell me if i make the bank angle greater when the ground speed is greater or less i forgot i know I'm a loser lol
@epicmj56103 жыл бұрын
Hey man, your not a loser. You’re just trying to learn something new everyday 😁. Don’t worry what other people think of you. BE YOU! But back to your question. You make the bank angle steeper if you are drifting farther away from your point. And make the bank angle shallower if you are to close to your point. (Do you mean air speed btw) cause when your air speed is increasing. Remember pitch, power, trim until you have reached your desired airspeed. Hopefully this helps, keep your head up bro 👍🏾💪🏾

What about crabbing?

Try to fly over the spot you were turning around. Like a group of friends or a house you want to flyover it. Do it as the FAA says. Start with a downwind turn or tailwind. See how well you do the tailwind flyover from the beginning. Dont stall it. Many have done and die. Starting all GRM FAA style with a tailwind have killed thousands. Start GRM with a headwind is much safer.
