Also, the situation in Hong Kong is an important case-study of personal freedoms in the 21st century. In this episode, Sam, Niko, Jake & Wren discuss the above and also ask the most important question: what part of a computer is the lungs?

What more could we do? Freedom is a delicate balance. So why don't the people of Hong Kong move to another country, where they can practice their way of life? It seems to me like Hong Kong wishes it could stay sovereign nation forever.

51:00 Thanks Sam for bringing that up! I'm American, but I lived in Iceland for over 2 years and plan on moving there permanently in the next year or two, and property issues are a big deal over there. Property is already incredibly expensive there, comparable to living in the heart of DC or LA. Most people don't own because they can't afford to, they just rent. It's not uncommon for a entire family to share a house or to live with your parents well into your 30s for financial reasons. They've been building more housing, but all the cheap housing is almost immediately bought up by savvy entrepreneurial types who can afford the investment, and turned to AirBnBs for tourists. And it's not just in Reykjavík. I remember being out in the countryside of southern Iceland and seeing a cozy little farmhouse out in the distance, a good 2 hour drive from any sizable town. Turns out it was a AirBnB. So you have a lot of property set aside that often is never even lived in by an Icelander because it's all going to tourism. Tourism has been great for their economy ever since the 2008 economic collapse, it really helped get Iceland back on their feet and has been overall a very good thing for them, but it's had its consequences as well. It's even been getting to a point where the infrastructure is having a hard time keeping up with the tourism growth. All the little rest stops on the Golden Circle, for example, often have ridiculous bathroom lines and food shortages. And I'm sure it's not just Iceland. I'm sure this is a big problem for any big city with a lot of travel going through it, or any tourist hotspots.

Thank you guys for talking about Hong Kong and spreading awareness. As a HK local, seeing other countries talk about it and knowing the real reasons why we care so deeply about this situation is really nice to see. The police brutality is getting worse here and the government seems to be siding with the police going as far as to give false information about the injuries caused to the protesters as well as protecting officers that blatantly ignore the law and fail to show warrant cards or any identification at all... I could go on but just wanted to thank you guys for talking about it

The problem with the AI discussion is that AI, and it's capabilities, often gets overrated or misunderstood. AI is bound by it being digital, and therefore logical. While logicality is also a part of how the human mind works, a large part of the decisions we humans take are not. The reason we are able to write literature, paint, make movies and create things that have never existed before is that we are able to approach things non logically as well as logically. A great example of how humans differs from computers and AI as we know it is the self driving car. The traffic system is a system designed by humans and made to be logical, this means it is something the computer is great at, however we still do not have self driving cars. This is because, even though the traffic system is logical, the humans in it are not, if it wasn't for human drivers and pedestrians we would have had self driving cars many years ago. we don't, and that's because a computer has trouble navigating correctly in a non logical environment. In other words it has a hard time understanding something that is neither zero or one, true or false but instead has multiple equally correct answers and no way of telling the best answer using logic (in design terms a wicked problem). Likewise an AI can't determine great content from bad content the way a human can, and more data does not help this, this is because while some qualities of ex. KZbin videos are quantifiable and logical, not all are. What Google is doing right now is applying AI to a nonlogical problem, and while it works somewhat it is the equivalent of a gaffataped rowing boat, just sticking together for now. They are trying to do something that goes against the capabilities of the tools they are using. We humans decide and design our future, and a computer can't do that, it can help, but not everything gets better or is even possible with big data and digital AI. Love all the channels btw just had to write something to the AI discussion (even I no-one wants to read this much)

Niko read this. At 39:00 Area you talk about the random chance of life happening over a billion years, but the most plausible theory is that the cell had been carried to earth on a comet and thrived in its conditions. I think its very unlikely the universal accident of life happened on earth. Seems logical that we were just pioneered here on accident a few billion years ago as some single called organisms.

@32:47 my question is why do we feel hurt when we destroy for example, rock formations? when we destroy things where nature has spent millennia putting naturally into balance, it has an effect upon us. there is something inside of us that yes, there is somehow something about entropy involved. i think that everything has somehow consciousness. for example, the sri vaishnava philosophy that everything is within God and God is within everything. Om Namo Narayanaya is somehow true. like, there is inherent truth and consciousness even in the smallest of things. I think that something in our deepest feelings resonates with that truth. So i think both answers would be correct. we enjoy all things and value all things because of their inherent connection in creation itself. everything has consciousness. but we also have the instinct to be united with one another because it is more in alignment with that truth. this can be attributed to both, yes, it benefits us materially and spiritually/emotionally. when science merges with spirituality, i believe it reveal this to be true.

*Before reading this, please understand that I am only making this argument/discussion point regarding the discussion of science and religion in the podcast (also please recognize that my argument is my words, and not directly those of the Catholic Church)* Regarding your discussion about how the Church describes and considers the origins of life, Niko was along the right track. When considering the biblical idea of the origins of life, one must also consider the form of the text they are reading. The bible is not one big historical narrative, but many different stories written many different ways, some historical, some poetical, some in one sense mythical (not mythical in the sense of fictional explanations of the world, like the ancient Greek myths, but of religious and symbolical narratives of Creation and God's interaction with humans that may not necessarily have happened exactly as is described in writing), which were later compiled into one book. It should also be considered that not too long ago Theology and Philosophy were also considered sciences in their own right, and only "modern" definitions changed them to being considered arts. Theological ideas and symbols of creation neither contradict nor are they contradicted by science, for they are not on the same field or plane of study. The story of Creation in the Bible is not a historical narrative, but a symbolical and religious one, realms outside of scientific explanation, and therefore unaffected by scientific discoveries of the origin of the universe. They are two different narratives, told in two different ways, to understand the same thing, the origin of the universe, and thus if science says that it all started with a big bang, and religion says that God willed everything into existence, neither is shown to be disproved, as they do not contradict each other. Also, does anyone else find the fact that before I present an argument I have to make sure that I place an explanation of what I am doing so as to make sure no one is offended or misinterprets my point somewhat ridiculous? Someone might even take offense to this paragraph. Gone now are the days when you could simply make an argument and discuss it with people without them immediately taking offense and thinking you are attacking them. I wish we could become a world were I could simply begin a discussion with someone out of the blue without them thinking I'm trying to persuade them to think how I do or forcing my ideas and opinions on them. Let's try to work for a better world people. Stay Awesome Corridor Crew! Stay Awesome Everyone!

I am a biologist, so I know that there are indeed projects which aim to generate artificial cells. Actually, I think in our building s.t. like this is done. But this is completely legal and supported and funded by research funding societies. But it is a very long way before a cell is made completely artificially. What is done at the moment is to generate membrane systems which resemble a cell. But then you still need the DNA and other parts of the cells to get a functioning cell. To get a working genome you could take the DNA from an existing organism and put it into your artificial cell. However, this cell would be the same cell as an existing cell and is also not completely artificial, I think. If you want to have this cell completely artificial you need to generate the DNA completely on your own without taking it from other cells, right? And this is super hard. The smallest genome of a bacterium is about 600000 base pairs and codes for 482 proteins. But you not only have gene after gene in the genome but lots of factors which allow genes to be transcribed only under certain circumstances. Furthermore, there are lots of control mechanisms that you don't have too many or too less copies of this protein. To my knowledge, it is, for now, impossible to generate a genome that balances itself in the production of proteins. What is also done is to generate cells in silico. This means, that you try to recreate a cell with a computer algorithm. To test this you feed your computer cell with some substances in form of data which they can "metabolize" and check whether this cell produces the same "metabolites" in the same amount as a real living cell. This is also done with Deep Learning I think. But this is all done with bacteria. If you want to go to mammalian cells, this gets even more complicated. You have all the different organelles and stuff. The human DNA for example only codes to 1.5% for proteins. The rest are introns or sequences originating from viruses. But lots of these sequences are regulatory elements. And this is not fully understood. I could go on forever but these are my insights into artificial cell generation. If you have any further questions, let me know. And by the way, very nice podcast :o)
