DOCTORS ARE LYING TO YOU WHEN THEY TELL YOU TO CONSUME LESS SALT AND IT IS MALPRACTICE IN MY OPINION TO DISCUSS SALT REQUIREMENTS WITHOUT DISCUSSING CARBOHYDRATE CONSUMPTION AS THE PRIMARY PATHOLOGY. SALT IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF BLOOD PRESSURE, BLOOD VOLUME AND CONTROL OF INTRACELLULAR PRESSURE. TOO LITTLE CAUSES HAVOC IN EVERY SPACE IN THE HUMAN BODY. GLUCOSE MASSIVELY INTERFERES WITH SALT’S ABILITY TO REGULATE FLUID SHIFTS. MIGRAINES, SEIZURES, FATIGUE, TINNITUS, BLOOD PRESSURE ARE ALL AFFECTED. Know the scientific truth about how your body works. Ask and answer the right questions to optimize your health! Exactly! Would you go to a mechanic who you know is cheating you and who is actively making your vehicle run worse? Of course not! So why go to a doctor who does the same? People live in this kind of induced fear that the only thing keeping them alive is their frequent doctor visits, when in fact most of them would be much better off if they had never seen a doctor. The only exception is for injuries and emergencies - and even there there's some scary incompetence going on. Do you know how common it is for surgeons to give "wrong side" surgery? They do the right surgery, but on the wrong side of the body! It is not rare!

I took care of my mother until her death. She was a type 2 diabetic and had bad swelling in her lower legs. Her doctors told me not to let her have any salt, even though she was craving salt all the time. They never said anything about sugar. There was no change in the swelling in her lower legs but she started having headaches and had weakness to the point she could hardly get out of bed. I took her to her doctor, he ordered blood work and told me again not give her any salt in her food even if she begged for it. Her appointment was on Thursday and my mother died that Sunday morning. On Monday morning I received a call from her doctor telling me I needed to bring her in immediately and have her blood work redone because her sodium level was really low and, if it wasn't due to lab error, it could be life threatening. I told him I couldn't do that and he told me again how serious this could be, I told him I couldn't bring her in because she died yesterday morning. There was dead silence on the phone and then he finally said he was sorry for my loss. If I knew then what I know now maybe my mother would still be with us.

My BP dropped from an average of 125/80 (and occasionally 140/90) to 110/68 on this year's physical (I'm 56) after going LCHF on 3/1/22. The "establishment" will tell a person to drop salt to control BP then prescribe a diuretic when that doesn't work. It's almost like it's a conspiracy or something. It gives me hope that you're trying to get real information! Not always easy.

Just yesterday a friend of mine passionately insisted that because he has congestive heart failure, salt is dangerous for him. His cardiologist has fed him this line. He is T2 diabetic, with multiple insulin shots per day. My sister in law was apoplectic last year insisting an increase in salt put her in the hospital (she also has CHF) and this information came from her cardiologist. I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to view what the medical industry (particularly cardiologists and nutritionists) disseminates about salt to be malpractice. Unfortunately, if a layman like myself attempts to counter this with facts, the response is incredulity and anger. So sad. But I keep trying. Thanks for the video Doc.

I fear for the vast human population that eats corporate "food". The deck is truly stacked against them. The marketing power they are up against is staggering. When I go to places like costco and watch the carts roll out with enormous quantities of poison, it hurts my heart and head.

As a frequent Costco shopper, I must agree with you. There however, if one really looks carefully, can find excellent quality low/no carb/sugar, low "corporate" junk ingredients. There are so many times that I wish I could point to other shoppers and tell them to put "that back on the shelf". It is sad to see overweight and obviously unhealthy people putting filth into their bodies. Your fear is not unfounded and is a national security issue as the military is having a difficult time recruiting for many reasons but one of the main issues is obesity and other metabolic health issues that deem a lot of people unfit for military service.

My blood pressure agrees 100%. When I was diagnosed with high BP, there was no talk about what I was putting in my face. Just gave me a prescription and handed me the DASH Diet paperwork and sent me on my way. Let’s fast forward to the good part … I cut the sugar, added the salt, BP thanked me. My mother-in-law experienced the same thing and is now off her BP meds and no longer T2. I can tell if I consumed too many carbs the day before simply by how easily my wedding ring set slips on and off my finger the next day. I know my doctor, for her own insurance reasons, can only follow the common medical practices as defined by the CDC, the FDA and whatever medical association that she has to belong to for her credentials. To deviate from those institutionally PRESCRIBED medical parameters is to increase the risk of a malpractice lawsuit. So, from patient's condition to diagnosis to prescribed medical advice (diet, drugs, surgery, rehabilitation, or other medical action) that flow chart for medical help is not for my benefit, but to protect the doctor from a lawsuit, based on the use of "best practices." Therefore, even if my doctor happens to know that a Keto diet would resolve most of my issues, her medical advice (to avoid a lawsuit) is to put me on an array of drugs or other "prescribed" therapies. The whole medical community is being held hostage by big Pharma, the medical community, and the big money that influences medicine, law, and politics. In my opinion its not doctors lying as much as it is the financial pressure on the doctors to protect themselves from legal action. Deviating from "best practices" is a financial risk.

I wish he had said this whilst I was still in the office so I could have asked more questions. But I am glad that I did find out about low carb when I was diagnosed with diabetes in October 2021 because I have managed to put it into remission with only diet. Hi Doc. Totally agree with your message but I wanted to point out a discrepancy between sodium and salt in your calculations. Of course you made a disclaimer about the math 🙂. Salt is approximately 40% Sodium and 60% Chloride by weight. The USA RDA of sodium (not salt) is 2300mg which corresponds to nearly 6 grams of salt, so you are very close to the RDA. Mainstream healthcare recommends (pre) hypertensive patients to drop it to 1500mg. But if you look at the studies, it only drops the systolic and diastolic by a few points. I achieved a much larger drop (normal BP now) by going low carb (not even keto)! In fact I had to slightly increase my salt intake to avoid momentary dizziness when standing up. I'm now enjoying salt guilt-free (of course not going overboard with the amount). The irony is that salt shakers have almost completely disappeared from food establishments in the US, but you'll find several packets of sugar at the table.

My mom had a heart condition (heart attack, then bypass, then stents). So she was a patient of different cardiologists for years. And not even once doctors (including her family doctor) asked her about her diet. Her last cardiologist only told her to "eat less". She had an apple shaped body (overweight, but not obese), but ironically that cardiologist had the same body shape. :- \ So, many doctors don't know or maybe don't even want to know how food affects the human body. It does sound very strange, but that's the reality.

Most medical practitioners in my rural area of the US just repeat the same old mistaken notions I've heard all of my life. It is both disheartening and infuriating. The betrayal I feel when a doctor asks things such as "Do you eat a healthy low fat diet"? And then tries to educate me about why I should be on a statin. I honestly only go so I can get a prescription for my thyroid medication.

Loved this video! I checked my spice cabinet and lo and behold I had a container of Morton's Lite Salt tucked way in the back! It claims to have 50% less sodium than regular salt...but if you read the ingredients, it also contains a bunch of other crap INCLUDING DEXTROSE!! I have experienced many occasions where I have tried to comment on my doctor's advice to be met with annoyance on their part. Dr. Ken Berry suggests that you should challenge your doctor with real knowledge and if they argue you should find yourself another doctor. The problem here is that there are not that many around anymore!! The good ones are so overbooked that you cannot get an appointment for 6 months or longer. The not so good ones, dare you to argue or find yourself another. If you live in a large city, you may be lucky to find another. But if you live in a smaller community, the choices are extremely limited. What is society supposed to do? I need to get off my soapbox now before I get thrown off!

We have an institutional problem consisting of professors who give the wrong information and students who do not question anything. I am absolutely sure that all this RDA, sugar and food chemicals have rooted in our system on a purpose. It makes no sense whatsoever that knowing all this basic information for over a century resulted only in an increase of disease, instead of a reduction. Thank you for sharing honest thoughts. Great insights as always.

Salt is so important, it helps regulate our electrolyte levels and so many people are leaving out the good mineral salt that our bodies need, instead most Americans on a standard Western diet are consuming sodium from all the processed and packaged foods.

Hi Dr. Cywes, thank you so much for your wisdom. I have been researching about my diabetes for over ten years and what you present is bang on! Just realizing the fact that I’m a carb addict has helped me tremendously. I have been on this roller coaster for over ten years. I am booked in with you for August, unfortunately I have to wait but in the mean time I will stick to the diet. I love what your doing and truly believe this needs to be educated to the allopathic world so they can start helping the diabetics of the world instead of making them worse. God bless!

Yeah. The blood likes to hold 4g of glucose, but many people consume 100-200g of carbs each meal. On the other hand, the blood holds 45g of salt, so I have a hard time understanding why consuming 9g instead the recommended max or 6g of salt can make such a big difference in BP.

Ive been eating carnivore for a number of months to try it out. I've been able to get a handle on a number of health issues as a result. It has fixed my IBS and joint pain (inflammatory ailments). I eat A LOT of salt. My blood pressure is typically around 105/70 HR60. On a very carb restricted diet, salt doesn't seem to effect my blood pressure in any noticeable way.

But Rob, we go (and pay) for our specialists not to give them a lecture of what we should be doing. I’ve definitely be told by a Dr before that I have to eat less salt, eat less eggs, eat less red meat, exercise more. It’s beyond criminal that we are constantly being told the wrong thing. No wonder we are all so damn confused. No wonder half of us run a million miles from a Dr. I never feel that I’m in a position to lecture them about my health - my god that’s why we go to them. What’s going on here? Even if they did have the time or inclination to listen to your video the average Joe Blow would never have the guts to contradict what they are telling us to do. I just avoid going these days.

Sometimes, it pays to search for another doctor at the local level. I did and found one who is open minded to new ideas. What really took me about him is that his attitude of getting his patients to use fewer prescription dugs by working on the root causes of various health issues such as obesity and other issues. A good primary doctor is difficult to find especially in the city that I live to where vices rule the day such as drinking, drugs, gambling smoking and who knows what else IS the business of this town/state.

Yes. I agree. Backing up the train one stop I would settle for the opportunity to engage a doctor in conversation. The general public is so profoundly mis-educated and gaslighted by a decades of alternate universe propaganda sustained by inertia and momentum that seems to run over and flatten anything in its path. There are so many highly educated intelligent ill people that are simply not reachable at any level when it comes to matters of health and nutrition. They simply trust their doctors as the experts when it comes to matters of health and nutrition. I am fine now, but was not so only 3 years ago. I had to set aside doctor's standard perfunctory weight loss advice (go on a calorie restricted low fat diet and get some exercise). Now 3 years on keto. Almost 1 year carnivore. Keto quickly put my 35 year history of chronic medical problems into remission. No medical problems. No medications. Can now hike 20 miles a day with ease. Vitals and blood work are all good. My family has of course noticed and we have conversed about how I did this. I have a close family member who I love dearly who was just diagnosed with non--alcoholic fatty liver disease NAFLD on top of raft of other chronic worsening metabolic problems. She of course scoured the internet medical websites to educate herself on everything that could be learned about fatty liver disease. She of course came across this typical info from the Mayo Clinic website as to Cause and Prevention of NAFLD: Causes: "Experts don't know exactly why some people accumulate fat in the liver while others do not. Similarly, there is limited understanding of why some fatty livers develop inflammation that progresses to cirrhosis". Prevention: To reduce your risk of NAFLD: 1) Choose a healthy diet. Choose a healthy plant-based diet that's rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. 2) Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight or obese, reduce the number of calories you eat each day and get more exercise. If you have a healthy weight, work to maintain it by choosing a healthy diet and exercising. Her primary care doctor of course concurred with this Mayo Clinic approach to prevention and also prescribed a statin to add to her daily regimen of meds and supplements. There is no having a conversation with her about this without instant reactionary hostility and an angry lecture from her to me that I am a reckless cult following moron who has somehow managed by dumb luck to not have killed myself with all the artery clogging fat I am eating and depriving myself of fiber and healthy nutritious fruits and vegetables that my body needs. In fact I am monumentally adding to her daily stress and anxiety as she needs to pray for me everyday that I do not suddenly drop dead from a heart attack or stroke from the daily stress of starving my body of nutrition (OMAD) followed by (in her words) unhealthily gorging myself on a gluttonous portion of cancer causing fatty red meat that is chocked full of artery clogging cholesterol. So far as she is concerned I am a ticking time bomb, just waiting to go off. She has "tasked" me with educating myself about the "blue zones" as the gold standard when it comes to matters of good health and nutrition.

@@robertcywes2966 it seems to me the problem lies in medical and dietician training. If we could get this right at least people would get correct advice. I have a dietician on my research team. I LOVE her. Lovely lady. She’s skinny as a rake but you would not believe what she eats or what she recommends. (Or maybe you would). All my skinny friends eat stacks of carbs. (And little salt).
