Question: how do you determine pickup locations? Like, if I were to build a strat style guitar, but I wanted a 24 fret neck, it would alter the pickup locations, wouldn't it? What would that position shift do to the tone of that pickup? How close can the pickup get to the fretboard end without causing trouble? Love the 12 and 9 hour builds, can't wait to see the hand tools build!

Idea for leftover chunk of wood that wouldn't make another guitar body, but only just: 3/4 or so scale solid body in the shape of a parlor style acoustic. Shortened scale. One P-90 in the bridge and an undersaddle piezo pickup. Call it the Crimson Custom Parlor. Or something. And mail me one.

Novice question here. Is using the planer the only way to get the wood to pop like that or can it be done with sanding?
@tyler_bt33267 жыл бұрын
Do you think anyone has ever thought of a Bandsaw crossed with a router. So, the blade has a smooth flat part that won't cut towards the top ( like the the bearing on a router) that can run along the template and cut the shape almost exactly. And you can adjust the height of the blade accordingly so you can have any thickness of wood and not cut the templates. Let me know what you think!
@markedone66677 жыл бұрын
There is no point in doing that, because a bandsawblade will always leave marks and wont cut precise enough so that the extra cost for the more complexe manufacturing of such a blade can be justified. Also i guess it would leave burnmarks where it rides along.
@gramursowanfaborden58207 жыл бұрын
that'd be impossible with a bandsaw due to their very nature.

Can someone explain to me exactly why Ben was planing the neck pocket side at an angle using the plywood to create the angle? Is it for the neck break angle? The ply is the same height as tune-o-matic? Great video and series btw :D
@gramursowanfaborden58207 жыл бұрын
that's exactly it.
@CrimsonCustomGuitars7 жыл бұрын
+JordyNorm the ply is 9mm thick, I want the strings to be 17mm or so high. Add 9mm to the 7mm that the fretboard will be plus frets and action and we get to around 17..a really cool trick figured out by our luthier Tom March.
@jawsykilla7 жыл бұрын
Crimson Custom Guitars Thanks but I still don't understand how the 9mm of the bridge is added onto the 7mm of the fretboard because the fretboard floats above the top so the thickness is negated surely? I'm probably just being thick. Where exactly is the 17mm being measured between? By the way I'm not refuting it, I just want to understand because it's some beautiful geometry if it all adds up.
@Furiora7 жыл бұрын
I just wondered, if Ben or anyone can answer for me that would be wonderful. The wood for this seemed so dull and lifeless when cut with the saw, router or was sanded, yet the grain sprung to life like it was oiled when cut with the plane. Can anyone explain this? is it just the sawdust occering though the other methods or something to do with the nateral oils in the wood? a combination of both?
@BuildEnvironmentTV7 жыл бұрын
Basically it's because a plane is a single super thin and super sharp cutting edge so it removes wood by shaving it off and literally cutting fibers perfectly cleanly and flat. It leaves behind a VERY smooth surface that reflects light well, so it looks bright and lively. Unless it's really oily wood it won't look shiny, but it's enough. Sanding is an abrasive process that removes wood by rubbing it away with small, sharp rocks. It leaves behind grooves and those grooves create incredibly small shadows and odd angles so it's not very reflective. Sawing is even rougher and tears wood apart. The surface does get dust and oils and general grossness, maybe even sunstruck so exposing the surface under it might look like brighter colored wood, but it won't be as lively if you sanded it rather than planed it.

According to Amazon prices you spend roughly between £200 and £900 a year on tape. Bigger packages is Cheaper. Now you should find out what to do with the small roll that's left when the tape is out. On Pinterest someone have made small Jewelry boxes with the leftovers. sophie-world.com/crafts/diy-duct-tape-jewelry-box-part-one I really should go to bed now.

@@CrimsonCustomGuitars I wouldn't claim to be a better person than you. You're definitely more entertaining than me, better at building guitars than me, and have better tattoos than me (or at least more since I only have two). I think it's because I'm so uncoordinated. If I were to attempt that, I'd catch the template on the saw, the saw would bite into it and bind, snap the blade and throw the whole thing into my no-no place, and as I collapsed, I'd knock myself out on the table... Or something similarly stupid and dramatic.
