Skincare and self care are two of my favorite topics. Why now - Winter. Folks have been talking to me about how dry their skin is, itchy, flakey and nose bleeds are happening everywhere.
First things first, what are you using to wash your hands, body and hair. What do you use to style your hair, moisturize your skin and what brand of make up do you use. All of these thing come into play, even your laundry detergent which I forgot to mention in the episode. Strongly recommend using EWG.org as a resource to look up your products. They have a team of scientist that analyze consumer products and rate them. It's very useful.
Be Mindful
If you have any skin conditions, or take medications that affect your skin consult with your primary care physician or dermatologist before adding anything to your routine.
The Skin Needs and Natural Oils
The skin - the largest organ of the body that it's and absorbs what you place on it, especially if you add water or alcohol in the mix. So essentially it breathes and ingests as well digests. This is why it's so important that we use the best of the best on it. Utilizing natural, high food grade oils are great for your skin. Especially olive oil. Our bodies under ideal conditions creates sebum, which is a self made natural moisturizer. If you are using product that is full of synthetic moisturizers they inhibit the bodies response to naturally produce sebum for the skin. Vegetable and nut based oils are more readily absorbed by the body.
Getting to know which oil suits your constitutions is a fun process. Start with the structure of your own skin, is it thicker, oily, dry, reactive or neutral. What do your senses tell you - how do you like the scent, how it feels on your skin, how long does it take for your skin to absorb the oil, how does your skin feel afterwards. Take note of areas that require more moisturizing. It's a lovely interaction of all the senses when it comes to the skin. Enjoy the process of nurturing yourself.
Food grade Solutions
I've thrown in a couple of DIY Solutions for softening the skin. The ingredients I've included are honey, lemon, olive oil, yogurt and buttermilk powder & water. WHAT?! YES! 90% of what I use on my skin is food grade. Food for your Skin. Check them out, I'd like to hear the results you've found after you've tried the oils and softening tips out.
Bathing & Environmental Factors
I have found bathing less in the winter helps with maintaining moisture in the skin and hair. Another factor is your water source and plumping, unless you have your own well and new pipes you are probably dealing with the way water is treated in the USA. Lead pipes leach into the drinking water and municipalities have been using "disinfectants" in the water aquifers for quite some time. The two most commonly known and used are Chloramine & Flourisilicates. They are added to the water to supposedly protect us however both of these chemicals have attraction to lead, which means that more lead gets leached into the water we bathe with and drink. They are also known to be skin & eye irritants - as well as the lungs (vapors). I've included a link to an article. It's worth the read

Your Eyes & Nose
The winter dryness also affects the nasal membranes and the eyes. Humidifiers are a lovely fix. Cool or warm depending on your constitution and preferences. Gently and lightly oiling the inside of the nostrils is also very helpful. I enjoy the cool mist gently falling over my face while I sleep. Zero nose bleeds for me this winter, so far.
All the tips in this episode can be implemented today. Take the time out for yourself. You deserve to have lovely skin.
