Great stuff fellas! I was just watching old reruns of "Whirlybirds" from the late 50's. They fly real good in that show - no horsing around at all. Fast forward to the 1980's and check out any TV or movie with a helicopter in it - big difference, lol. I love when they just yank collective like they're starting a chainsaw. 😂🤣😂

Hi Kenny and Chris-- I'm really enjoying the videos. I have a question that I'm wondering if you could cover in this Auto Rotation Series. I'm trying to fully understand the timing of the pulling of collective at the end of the auto. Does one do the flare without pulling any more collective than is already in at the beginning of the flare and wait until leveling out to pull more collective to cushion the landing? Or does one pull at least some collective DURING the flare as part of the slowing down of the decent and also the burning off of airspeed. And, in the instance of a power recovery, do we wait to pull collective until we've rolled the power back on (so as to not put too much drag on the engine as RPM is coming back up)? Would it be possible to show that aspect of the procedure in a multiple view shoot, where we see what's happening out the front while simultaneously seeing what's happening with the collective to better understand this relationship between flaring and pulling collective? Thanks in advance!

PS: I'm a member who got a few hours of real life training in before the pandemic started, but since last February have been training in Aerofly FS2 flight simulator with a virtual reality headset and a set of Puma Pro Flight Controls. Hopefully I'll get back up in the air sometime in the next few months.

Great question Robert! We will work up a video on this topic! We have 13 new videos coming with a DPE starting today. We will put this on the list for the first to be filmed after the "DPE Pet Peeves"

I was wondering this myself! I'm nowhere near even getting started for training - that's many years off, but I enjoy learning about these things nonetheless. Only been in a helicopter once in my life on a sight seeing ride over Niagra Falls from the Canadian side. The exchange rate was fantastic in 2001, so it was an absolute bargain for the wife and I to go up. Was also my wife's first time ever in any aircraft! What a rush!

Sorry for the delayed response. I teach collective stays on the floor (through the flare) until you start pushing the cyclic forward to level the ship. During a turn, you may need to raise some collective to slow rotor rpm, but after rpm is back to where you want it, then collective goes back to the floor. Even with power recovery, collective stays on the floor until you level the aircraft. I roll the throttle back on during the flare, but collective stays down. The collective is the only thing you have to cushion the landing. If you use it too early, than you may have a hard landing. You need as much collective as possible, especially if you level the aircraft at a high altitude.

@@christopherhouser6935, Thanks for your response Chris! I'm trying to get this kind of muscle memory happening when I practice in my sim (R22, expert mode, in Aerofly FS2 with virtual realty headset and Puma Pro flight Trainer Controls). It seems that the moment of "slow down enough to level out/then pull collective" happens REALLY FAST! I can get into the glide with the right speed/RPM /attitude" pretty well, and I feel like I'm getting the "gentle flare at tree top level" happening, but it's the "slightly more aggressive flare/hold it/level off (perfectly)/pull collective (without pulling too much and ballooning), gentle touch down" phase that, for me, is sloppy/not figured out. I don't usually crash in the sim (but some of the landings are hard and ungraceful). I'm glad I have the sim to get comfortable with the muscle memory, and I'm sure once I get back in the air and get some real life training on the procedure with, it will make more sense. I do hope you and Kenny can do a video that focuses on this moment in the procedure with especially with camera angles on the collective and outside at the same time. When you guys do it on video it seems like you have all the time in the world.
