Episode 4 of my attempt to set the overall Fastest Known Time in under six days on the 341 mile Sheltowee Trace.
This is where it all began for me, by setting my first FKT in 2019 going Self-Supported and the first ever Unsupported FKT in 2021. I just missed setting the overall by 5 hours and I was unable to shake the thought of possibly coming back one day to attempt to set the new overall fastest time.
At that same time, it also occurred to me that if I did come back one more time, I would try to go supported with a crew and complete the trifecta of FKT’s on the Trace, with having held an FKT in each of the three categories. I attempted to accomplish this in 2021 but fell short at 1/3 of the way through due to poor weather. Will my fourth and final attempt be successful?
On this attempt I carried my Garmin Inreach mini and wore a Corus Apex watch for verification. For shoes I wore mostly the Altra Olympus 4.0’s, but also Topo Ultraventure 2's and Topo Pursuit's with Darn Tough socks and Dirty Girl Gators. My trekking poles were Fizan Compact 3 aluminum poles. My running vest was a Salomon ADV Skin 5.

I know I keep saying it...but really like seeing all the different angles of you doing this FKT. Such a different way to see you tackle this. Looking forward to the next episode!

I love putting together footage from 5 different cameras but it certainly makes the edit much more time consuming....glad I didn't have to work in some drone footage and music too or these episodes wouldn't be coming out till next month, lol! Only three more to go!

Man its almost painful just watching you struggle. Looking forward to figuring out what the deal was with your sabotage! you look to be walking much better in the episode 5 clips! Rain!! I hate rain! I suppose you cant expect perfect weather over so many days! Man, stopping at each aid station has to be such a mental relief when you get there!!

I think I feel the pain returning while editing lol. Still many ups and downs coming in episode 5-7....just when I think I may have figured everything out I get blindsided by something else. The aid station stops were so awesome! The further I got the more i looked forward to them. After 3 attempts you would think I would at least have at least one where everything went right, but no, there is always something....it's almost like in movie "Time Machine", he goes back in time to change what happened to his love and she still got killed but just in a different way...same thing here, no matter how many times I went back and figured something out, there's a good chance something new will go wrong that I did not expect, but that is just the nature of the beast on somenthing this long. Thanks Mark!

Thank you so much. I am glad you enjoyed it! I’m trying to get one or two episodes out each week, so it definitely cuts into the amount of time I’ve been editing, but I’m doing my best with the time I have!

watching you running on that ankle makes me criinge, It reminds me of my ankle years ago. but I wasnt trying to hike 60 miles per day I almost forgot to mention, watch the caffeine it has a half llife of 4 hours and can interfer with sleeping so can popping alot of advil, the body gets overloaded and it slows detoxification of these substances down. even if exhausted caffeine can interfere with proper sleep.

Yeah, there was a lot of things. I probably did wrong on this, but too little too late. I think it takes years of experience to figure out how to handle issues in your body. 50 K’s, 50 miler‘s, and 100 milers have never affected my feet at all. Crazy things can happen when you’ve been running for many days straight. In hindsight, I should’ve steered clear of caffeine and sugar, and Advil as much as possible.

@@jasonwish- you can be happy that you made it, just wondering if you have plans on some other challenge? I like to watch ed pratt on his uni cycle pretty funny sometimes. you could cycle the discovery trail, that is like 4000 miles, I see a few people who have done it hiking and they took about a year. that is a long time of hiking everyday

@@rosesmith6208 I have plenty of new adventures in the works but nothing that long...mostly 4-5 day backpacking and kayak camping trips.
