Well, I’ve had over 100 pounds in it for three weeks in a hot greenhouse and it still came right back but maybe I’ll try heating the hull with a hot air gun and see if that makes a difference, thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for sharing Jason!!! I've got a blue Perception Hook and love it. I use it primarily on small lakes for fishing and just chilling. I've been wanting to get it out to some small rivers like you do and camp. I totally agree with all your pros/cons of it. It's a great stable kayak, easy to get in and out and navigate. Let me know if you ever want any company on one of your kayak camp trips, I'd be up to coming your way to join you. I'm in the Canton area and can get PTO pretty easily if you go during the week. Thanks again! -dave

I have a Pungo 12 and just one 2-night trip under my belt. It's nice that it has dry storage; but, I'm somewhat envious of the rear storage on yours and that you can put a large bag back there without having to cram it through a storage hatch. I'm tall and like the 12' kayak but admit that I've considered a sit-on-top (SOT) for storage space, max load capability, and dog friendliness. Two things keeping me from a SOT: exposure to the elements and trying to hoist that beast on top of my car (not ready for a trailer and SOTs are HEAVY).
@jasonwish-8 ай бұрын
I agree with all your reasoning...I really do love the huge cargo area and don't want to have to stuff my gear into a dry storage area. Thanks for the comment!
@dustinkelley79328 ай бұрын
Funny that you'd post this when I'm trying to decide on a new kayak! I've had a cheap pelican for a few years and really want to upgrade but I'm struggling to decide what to get. I like the thought of a sit in for more speed and distance (I'll be mostly in all flat water), but they seem to be more limited on open storage options with alot of them having a hatch in the back and just the bungee on the top at the front. The sit ins seem to be awesome for storage and if I want to fish, but I worry about how they'd paddle if I just wanted to go cruise around a lake for a day or two. There's so many options it's overwhelming!
@jasonwish-8 ай бұрын
I agree, very overwhelming. For what I do, I just don't want the heavier weight of a sit on top especially when I have to drag it around debris fields that I encouter on Ohio rivers.

Hello fellow Jason 👋 I've had the Sound 10.5 for almost 2 years now. I have yet to do any kayak camping with it but it's been a solid yak for sure. It does come with a ram ball mount with a rod holder. There are 2 sizes of the ball mount, a 1" and a 1.5". The larger one came with the yak but I ordered the smaller one to assemble a gopro mount. It doesn't have the anchor trolley or the mooring cleat nor does it have the front bungie. It does have mold marks to allow the addition of it if one so chooses. I myself did add a bungie on the front as I needed another storage option. I also added a perimeter line around 2/3 of the yak. I've been considering purchasing the perception conduit, a 13ft craft as it has "dry storage" in both the stern and bow, allowing for more storage volume. Happy adventuring!
@jasonwish-8 ай бұрын
Thanks Jason, I just looked up the Conduit and it does look like a nice yak. I'll have to check out the dry storage size on it to see if it might work for me, it would be very different from what I'm used to having all my gear on the outside.

I have a Seastream 12 for camping. It's s sit on top. I very much like it for class 1 rivers. It's very stable, easier to get in and out of, and has dry storage. One advantage of a sit on with a lawn chair seat It the chair lifts off and makes a camp chair. The rear tank well holds 2 smaller coolers and a dry bag or two. The front storage hatch holds plenty of gear for a 3 day trip. Thank you for the review directed toward camping. River camping is definitely my favorite thing to do in recent years.
@jasonwish-8 ай бұрын
I appreciate the comment, I definitely want to try a sit on top sometime, but I have a feeling for longer trips I’m gonna want a sit in. I’m eyeing a Jackson tripper currently, 12 footer sit in with a nice adjustable seat that comes out for a camp chair as well with cargo storage and dry storage. Thanks for the input, Happy Paddling!

I got one just recently. Im a fisherman, so I love it. But you can definitely get that oil canning out. All you need is a heat gun and some weight on it. Most of your cons were really from neglect, but I agree with the foam blocks being a bit of a nuisance. Ive been considering cutting mine back a little.
@jasonwish-8 ай бұрын
Yes, I will try the heat gun method for sure. Not sure what you mean about my cons being from neglect though?? No dry storage, poor cup holder design, useless bungie cords on front, foam block too big and the oil canning, which was like that new out of the wrapper, so nothing neglected here. Anyways, glad you like your kayak, it really is nice and the pros outweigh the cons for sure.

Nice little kayak. The seat back looks like a luxury. I use a sit on top Ocean kayak prowler 13. Definitely sit in is more stable. Not so sure about dryer. Upside of sit on top is ease of entry and slightly better visibility. I have similar big cargo area in the back with plugs in the scuppers and use plugs in the cockpit. Pull the plugs and it will handle light surf(ocean). As for the oil canning, maybe a couple of sandbags inside with a gentle application of a heat gun on the hull? Food for thought. Cheers

I have a Perception Caspia it was my first Kayak and it is somewhat similar to your Hook which the exception of the cargo bed. I recently purchased an Old Town Loon 126 (12’ 6”) Angler. It was a Total Cargo Capacity of 450 lbs, and 390 lbs of usable cargo capacity. It doesn’t have any foam blocking for flotation, the foam is sandwiched between the polyurethane. It’s a sit inside with a rear sealed bulkhead and hatch. The front is open and has a dashboard. The seat is fully adjustable and the kayak has foot pegs and thigh braces. There are spray skirts available for the larger cockpit. There are smaller Old Town Loons, but I bought this for its larger capacity. I also bought an Old Town Sportsman 132 Bigwater Fishing Kayak. It’s essentially the Predator 132, but with some modifications. I would have liked that my Caspia been designed similar to your Kayak with the storage area. I had bungee cord on the top decks. I was able to hold all of the basic gear; Tent, Sleeping Bag, food and beer, but I was setting pretty low in the water. That’s why I went with the bigger kayak, I was hoping to make it so I could keep from dragging the bottom of the kayak.

I agree I bought the hook 10.5 for myself and the 9.5 for the wife and got rid of our other kayaks because they didn’t have the crazy amount of space that the perception sound kayaks have. Jason I bought this kayak last season after watching your videos. Absolutely love it. Bought it on sale at Dicks for $280! I highly recommend it as well. Such a great lvl 1 class river kayak. I have a hobie mirage and a Jackson coosa x. To me the Hook is a better balance and I use it 9 times out of 10 when I’m on a river. The sit in allows you to have a lower center of gravity. The Coosa X has incredible features but is nearly 100lbs! 😅 My hobie is great and the pedal drive is great. Super stable but more an ocean as it’s wide and long. I had an old town 106 pdl and while a great fishing kayak you’d be pulling the drive every minute whenever you go shallow or into weeds on a river. IMO the hook might be “entry level” but it’s light enough to shoulder to the river, has a tankwell, interior storage for semi dry storage, lower center of gravity, has a tapered bow for speed/somewhat taper stern for stability and speed and very maneuverable. If you were fishing I’d probably recommend a crescent shoalie or a bonefide rvr but seeing that you really don’t I think a sit on top is over complicating a river camp/float. Good luck and thanks Jason. Can’t wait to see some of your adventures this season.

Hands down you got the best boat for backpacking. Sit on top need 11.5-12 ft for same stability. Weighs more if you have to drag around. Lose your paddling leverage from sitting high and can't brace off your thighs. Doesn't the Colonel have one. I use dog food storage container for dry storage
@jasonwish-8 ай бұрын
Yes, the Colonel has two, but he never kayaks anymore, I think he may have retired from it. Lol. Yeah, I really like my sit in, but I have been eyeballing a Jackson tripper sit in, looks like it might be the next best thing with a removable adjustable seat, ample outside cargo storage and dry storage. But it’s like 15 pounds heavier so I wouldn’t want to use it if I’m on a river with multiple portages.
@Arctic650Spider8 ай бұрын
I got the Ascend FS 10 similar to yours. Has dry storage only small items Camera,phone, wallet. Has removable suspended seat camp chair. Only con has V bottom front and back. Excellent tracking and speed. But dragging on portage flops 45 degrees on one side while dragging

Hi you were commenting on using your Perception Hook 10.5 for Whitewater Kayaking. I used to take my Perception Caspia 10.5 down the Slippery Rock Creek, and the Neshannock Creek in Western Pennsylvania. The Slippery Rock Creek is a Class ll, and Class lll Creek from Rose Point, and McConnell’s Mills State Park. The Kayak actually handled the rapids pretty well. One of the best features was if I tipped and “Went Swimming” I just fell out and grabbed my Kayak and paddle as it passed by… when I got into an eddy I’d dump the water out using the drain plug. My Caspia didn’t have the “Day Bed” that’s featured on the Hook 10.5, and Sound 10.5. I was looking at the Old Town Vapor 10, and Old Town Vapor 12. The Vapor 10 didn’t have a large Day Bed capable of fitting a large backpack, the Vapor 12 wasn’t that much better. I was wondering how much room was in the Cargo Hold of the Old Town Loon 106 Angler? I have the Old Town Loon 126 Angler and there’s plenty of storage for equipment. The Loon has Polylink 3 type Polyurethane that eliminates the need for the foam blocks, and there’s a waterproof hatch behind the seat.

Hello American friend! A Russian man is writing to you! I saw your video and the problem with dents in plastic, you can completely eliminate it by heating the plastic with a hair dryer! Set the temperature to 100 degrees, and evenly heat the area that needs to be corrected. Heat consistently without staying in one place for a long time, move the hair dryer nozzle over the area, you must warm it up well. Next, push down in the opposite direction on the part of the kayak that was deformed and install a weight so that it applies pressure to the place of damage (I think 5 kg of weight will be enough). Leave it until the plastic cools completely. After cooling, it will take the desired shape. I have the same kayak and had the same problem, it arose due to improper storage, don’t be afraid, just do as I wrote to you, everything will be fixed within 30 minutes! Tested for yourself! Have you tried to just set your kayak upside-down in the yard all day in the July or August??? They are made to pop back in place that way. Worked for me. I heard it pop back out in a couple hours in my house lol. Great video. Now on to your question about going to a sit on top. I have an ascend T12. It fits my 2 heart and 50 pound. But and it's quite easy to stand up in and walk. About. However, when I have all my camping year on there. Add my 60 pound dog and my fishing gear and food and drinks I don't stand. Shut up. I have taken it through class 2 Rapids with a dog and gear. But I had to put my feet out to the sides kind of in the water. For balance so we didn't flip but I do it all the time. And it's become quite easy. I don't recommend anyone do it. My ascent is kind of like a barge. It is but heavy in current. I like it, So far, it has served me better. Then my starter Pelican Angular kayaks. However, I have taken my Pelican angler kayaks down class 3 Rapids. Empty, of course, no gear. And I certainly don't advise anyone to do that. But with trial-and-error I've become pretty great at that. I've been friends with you on here for long enough. I'll let you borrow mine for the day. I trust you with it.
