Man, you are so right about mic locations. I finally learned this like 3 weeks ago with Dirac. Kept getting crummy responses after RC and finally it occurred to me to stop giving it info it doesn’t really need. So kept the measurements tight to LPs, and also gave it two points behind the chairs that had bad peaks that were causing some bad rattle. Results were so good.

@@RichardNutman That's probably the case most of the time. Dirac seems to do a better job with the more points you give it though. Also, boomy bass and room rattle bug the hell out of me so i found benefit in finding peaks in areas outside of the listening area and including them in the calibration. But I wouldnt think you could go nuts with that without hurting the listening positions.
@RichardNutman
@RichardNutman 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielwander605 Yeah I think so, you may end up cutting out some frequencies when the mic was in an anti-node, that would've sounded fine on the couch. I think the many positions thing is more for normal living rooms with chairs at the side. A single couch in front of the listening position most likely doesn't benefit from any additional mic positions.

Many thanks for the tips, Steven. Using the Audyssey app to restrict EQ above 400hz is a great tip, and certainly something I’d have never thought of. I set the app to ignore any EQ above 399hz on my Marantz SR7011 with my Bowers and Wilkins 600 series speakers. Although subtle, I’m pretty sure that my speakers are now performing better. I tested this in A/B style with a song I know well and the results seemed positive. Thanks again. 🙏🤩

Couple of questions... 1) I plan to use a miniDSP HD to set up 3 subs in my room. After that procedure and getting the subs working well together, I wonder about applying Audyssey correction and if it might screw up the results obtained from the miniDSP. Should the editor app be used to disable EQ for the sub channel so that Audyssey doesn't affect the work done with the miniDSP? Or, should the Audyssey correction be applied to the sub(s) "on top" of the miniDSP calibration? 2) When calibrating the sub with the miniDSP, should I shoot to calibrate to a house curve with the bass boosted? The reason I ask is that I plan to use Dynamic EQ in Audyssey. Since that boosts bass at lower than reference volumes, would calibrating to a flat curve work better than a house curve if planning to use Dynamic EQ? Thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

Cool ... I saw your added explanation on Dynamic EQ but I know that one was made for Dynamic Volume but I can't find it. I have both features on my Marantz receiver and have played around with it over time. At first I turned both off and the sound was decent. I decided to experiment. Dynamic EQ acts like a loudness control except that it is dynamic meaning that it changes depending on where you have the volume. It mostly boost the subwoofer and the surround speakers. That's great if you want more sound out of those speakers and useful if you mostly listen at lower levels. Dynamic Volume is a compression tool. It is not there to cut low freqs of high freqs. What it actually does is remove peaks while boosting lower sounds. So the big explosions in films are reduced. At the same time you can hear more subtle things in films such as a scene where ice cubes drop in a glass or raindrops hitting.

However, in going back through after adding a sub, I am struggling to get my subs to register at 75db (even with gain/volume turned up fully) to get Audyssee started. Mic was 3" in front of the sub before it would get above 50DB, yet the whole house was rattling. Any tips? Can I effectively run Audyssee without the subs? I am missing out on some of the control that let me hear dialogue at lower levels!

Great vid! Denon says that you should not limit FR to 300hz because: "There is a belief that room correction should only be applied to frequencies below 300 Hz because that is the frequency range in which most of the room problems occur. This belief is based on an inherent assumption that a properly designed loudspeaker will perform as desired at higher frequencies and thus require no correction. This is not at all contradictory to MultEQ XT. If the loudspeaker is in fact properly designed then no correction will be applied to it. One simple fact that the proponents of this theory seem to overlook is that even the best designed loudspeakers will suffer from artifacts at high frequencies produced by reflections from nearby flat surfaces such as display screens, furniture or cabinets. MultEQ XT performs this kind of correction when it is needed to allow the loudspeaker to achieve the performance it was designed to have." So what to do?

Thanks, we cover this in the video and explain why you may not want to do full eq based on a few spots in the room that you may or may not always listen at. Try it and see what you like.
@unusualsky2300

It was said that the multeq filter range actually only starts at about 250hz below the frequency you kept it as the software tries to even it out from the original response to the audyssey response and only uses the frequences specified underneath the one you have given it, so to compensate that we put it at 500-600 range for correction .

Very interesting about the LPF. I've been reading a thread on AVSforum that states otherwise. They also advocate running a second steeper LPF with miniDSP(48dB slope) as most users tend to boost the last 2 octaves much higher than the mains/surrounds. This has a purpose to lower chestiness in vocals from center channel and also to improve midbass impact. Anyways, super fun to experiment and thanks for an awesome channel. Can't wait to see the house build.

You aren't making it sound farther than it should be. All sound does this as it travels. It's been proven over an over that a natural sound has a house curve. It is not flat. Even at distances in our rooms. Mixing studios use curves as well. What we're doing will not negate the sound guys work. We're ensuring our rooms sound comfortable and accurate. That said do what sounds good to you.
@larskvaloy

I just realised it is the curve that would be the one in the listening posission. Not at the speaker. Because making it flat at listening possision is of course boosting treble not letting it naturally roll of.. And making it not flat at the speaker. Then it makes sens. I for some reason tought it sendt a roll off curve from the speakers making it "double" effect in the Room if you have a large room. Sorry for your answer!

I am one of those you mention that have to boost my Klipsch RP-440C center speaker. I had to boost it by +3.5dB to get natural vocals, as well as some "toe-up" to aim the center at head possiton. What are the most common issues that makes the center perform so poorly? I just did extreme toe-in on my L/R-speakers Klipsch RP-250F and got extremely good results compared to normal toe-in, the sound stage opened up super wide, and the transient response is hugely improved. By extreme toe in i mean to aim the left speaker at the rightmost listening position and vica versa, so they are angled past the center listening position in a 4-seater configuration. The room is open ended on one whole side, and with a L-shaped sofa against the back wall.. Not optimal.. Thank you so much for making these videos!!

Hi,an important question for me and maybe for the others too. In the Audyssey app you can also limit the sub, the sub is now to 250Hz. According to the specifications for Klipsch SPL-120, the frequency response is 24Hz-125Hz. Do I have to limit the sub to 125Hz in the Audyssey app or not? I have limited all speakers to 500Hz and they sound great. Thanks for your video.

Been waiting on this video! Here's a question though. Using Dynamic EQ, it was shown that audyssey boosts the rear speakers way higher than they should be depending on how much lower the volume was from reference. So at say -40 the surrounds would be at like -35 volume wise. They used a sound test disc to check all speakers at certain volumes to see what audyssey was doing. Ever try this to see how much it changes the volumes at different levels ?
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 жыл бұрын
The rears need to be slightly boosted as I explain in my video due to the way we hear. Rears being the same spl as everything else will sound quieter. As for dynamic Eq they actually have a ton of science backing what it's doing. Google Fletcher Munsen curve. You can also adjust the offset and aggressiveness of dynamic eq. Don't take any one persons advice to heart. Many don't realize why what is being done is being done. Also realize when using pink noise it measures every octave so there's a lot more lower frequencies being measured so you don't really see exactly what is being done across the entire range unless you measure the response. So anyone analyzing dynamic eq with a simple SPL meter I'd ignore the info as it's just not enough information to understand what is happening. Give it a try and do what you think sounds best.

Room modes exist due to walls not the cost of the sub. It could be a $300 sub or a $6000 sub and the same mode will exist. If you have a null the sub or seat should be moved to avoid it or fix it, dual subs should also be a minimum. See ep 10.

Just found this video after reading recommendations for ages, i upgraded earlier this year to a denon x2800 from a x2300, I always used 8 positions on the audyssey app with both avrs and a tripod for measurements since for the last couple of years, I did just use to use cushions as recommended. Audyssey killed dialogue on the 2800h and the sound at times sounded flat even with setting audyssey to only equalize to 400-500hz, I had to have dialogue enhancer on high. I thought I would give your recommendations a quick do, I just ran 3 positions on top of cushions and set audyssey to equalize to 310hz, my system is so much better and I no longer have to turn dialogue enhancer on at all.

Did I miss something in one of your videos?

The mains will effect the subs even below the crossover as it's a slope. Try raising the crossover higher and then adjusting sub distance to get it aligned as best you can.. If you have to cross over 100hz to fix it then you may have to do that. If the subs are up front localization shouldn't be as big an issue.

Hey, when I activate dynamic eq it makes great bass but, it also boosts the surround speakers. Is there a way to stop audessy from doing this?

You can decrease the level of the surround speakers before sending the measurements to the receiver. Dyn. EQ increase the level by about 1dB for every -5dB you go below reference level ( 0 dB ) . So, if you listen mostly at -15dB below reference just lower the surrounds by 3dB and you are good to go. It's not optimal if you go above -15 dB below reference, but still better than the overly aggressive boost. After all this time there's still no way to just disable the surround boost when using Dynamic Eq. unfortunately. It seems Audyssey no longer cares about the app and have moved on from it. 🤦‍♂️

Once the room correction file has been uploaded to the receiver in Preset 1, what do I need to check in the receiver Setup Menu to make sure it's gtg? Just make sure Speaker Preset 1 is selected in the receiver? Do I have to make sure MultEQ XT32 is turned on and set to a specific setting in the Audyssey menu (i.e. Flat vs Reference)?

Do you ever have problems with the microphone that's comes with Denon receivers? I just ordered a denon avr x3600h and I can't run Audyssey becuase it says no speaker detected. I can hear the speakers test tone loud and clear.

Never had that issue. I'd contact the manufacturer and get a replacement mic sent out.

@@hometheatergurus I have one already on the way from the seller. I'm hoping it's just the mic as everything else works fine. Keep up the good work. Subscribed.

If you are using a Audyssey there are so many settings you have to change from factory. They think a mid roll down should be good, turn off mid compensation. Also they turn on loudness and compression default (no joke). I don't understand that at all. I have a whole review of the Denon receiver it sounds like junk out of the box with their defaults. I found dynamic eq can distort things at low volume. I don't know why or what it's doing, but I hated it even if it ads to the sound stage. Completely agree with you on limiting the eq and most of what you say. It can make your stuff sound like junk for sure. Lately I have been just turning it all off.
