I'm 60. I've lived in these types of 'Lyle' homes many times over the years. In Rockhampton in the late 80s/early 90s, we lived in what they called a 'miner's cottage' for a few years. Basically the same thing but smaller.
Oh! Stop it! I was wandering through the BSU rabbit hole after binge-watching the entire 7 episodes yesterday because I wanted to find out about that big white colonial Queenslander. Now, I haven't watched all of your video as yet (I'm 50 seconds in), and I know I may be wrong, but it reminds me of a house I used to deliver to when I worked for Coles a few years back. It was on the Northside though, because we covered most of the Northside of Brissie out of Aspley. Oh, and the reason I was hunting is because I too am a bit of a house detective geek, too. Whenever I delivered to an older home, I would ask the residents what they knew of the history of the place. One place in particular stays clear in my head. The home overlooks Albion Park and is at the intersection of Toorak Road and another street I won't mention just for privacy. I assumed the stately mansion was a historical home from the 1800s but I was sooo wrong. The people who live there had the home constructed from the plans of an 1800s mansion in Victoria that housed a Governor or something? My memory is a little vague on the details. But the thing is, the home is under 20 years old I think. As you live in Brissie (I assume), just go for a drive up Queens Road in Albion/Hamilton and I'm pretty sure you'll find it. I am also sure that if you were to knock on the door, the lovely people who own the place would be sure to give you the details I don't remember. Oh, and now I'll have to start going through your old videos. Thank you!

2:23 I may be way off, but isn't there a street to the left of the Poinciana tree? I'm pretty sure I know that one from my Coles deliveries. I think there is a carport under the house on the side street. I may be wrong though. 3:56 I have a mate out at Wondai who owns a house that looks the spitting image of that one. 6:05 Dang's home looks like so many of those 'Mater Prize Homes' that were raffled around that area in the day. I lived at 7 Pines Caravan Park, on the corner of Station Road and Turton Street in Sunnybank. I spent from Year 2 to 4 at Sunnybank Primary before we moved to Perth for four years. 7:05 Ah, Chelmer. That was the white house that looked familiar. But hey, Brisbane has quite a number of these grand homes. In 1978, one of my first jobs was at a dress factory at the bottom end of Albert Street. The uber-rich owner often took me away from the storeroom, drove me to his place at Chelmer in his Rolls Royce, and got me to weed his gardens. I was fifteen going on 16 back then. 9:30 When I lived in Rockhampton, there was a house like this on the Emu Park Road, just out of Koongal. I remember it because I went to a deceased estate auction there. The house and rear shed were a time capsule, and in my opinion should have become a museum. Especially the old (1920s) cars and tractors, and the piano, and radiograms etc. 10:25 Do you use Queensland Globe? My curiosity about the areas I have lived or live in has me using Google Earth, Maps, and especially Queensland Globe because the satellite imagery is updated more often. 10:47 I paused, and I'm going to say, an old school house. The benches under the building were a dead giveaway...(bugger, I hope I'm not wrong now...as he presses play again). Yep. I went to many of these, and I worked at one up in Far North Queensland. The Bloomfield River State School. Trivia: When we came back from our four years in Perth, we stayed with friends at Annerley for a few months while mum and dad were buying a house. I had to go to Junction Park State School for a month. Now, when we went to Perth, we lived in a new estate, and the local school was a new, modern, open-plan classroom type of thing. You can't imagine my horror when I saw Junction Road Prison for Children! We ended up in Strathpine and I went to the old Strathpine Primary which was located where the Public Health Service Clinics are opposite the High School. Strathpine Primary was very similar to Pinkenba. Thank you so much for taking me on this journey on an otherwise gloomy Friday arvo. You've given me smiles and fond memories throughout this video.

You got it about the street to the left! I'm more than a bit obsessed with Mater prize homes and have been collecting info and photos of them of a few years now. Stay tuned for a video about them sometime this year.... The school seens were filmed on your early turf too then - they were filmed at Sunnybank High! You nailed it with picking it was a school house! Nice work! I take my detective hat off to you! So glad you enjoyed watching! Thanks for all your other thoughts and stories too, I really appreciate people taking the time to interact and chat about my videos! Hope you like Part 2, which just went live!

@@thehousedetective I'll go hunt it down. Thank you. I love having this shared random curiosity about our house and neighbourhood history. I didn't think there were too many of us about. I hadn't heard about your work until I looked at your video list. I know I'll enjoy pt 2. I mean, hey, it BrisVegas history.

Was the house in rocky near Koomgal near the meatworks Teys??
@BradGryphonn6 ай бұрын
@IreneBond-in7nt It was past Koongal, on the right hand side. It was almost hidden by overgrowth, painted in dark heritage colours. If you're thinking of that house by itself on the right side of the road just before Teys Brothers, my daughter lived there for a while, renting the place. It was an old basic Queenslander.

I enjoyed watching the show, being a local I also spent some time on Google street view matching up the locations. I also guessed Pinkenba state school straight away while watching the show. Unfortunately it looks like that in real life, abandoned and vandalised. Glad to have found your channel. Subscribed.

Oh thanks heaps! It was a bit addictive trying to find the locations wasn't it! I basically had to do an ep to justify all the unpaid time I spent on it! 🤣 Yes, Pinkenba is in a sad and sorry state unfortunately. Thanks for subscribing and commenting, I really appreciate it!
