As a CDL driver, one thing I would suggest doing to help with backing is find and empty lot, bring some cones, and do something called a straight back. The idea is you drive forwards til you clear the cones and then back up until you clear the cones. Do that for 30-40 minutes a day for a couple weeks and youll start to understand what you need to do the next time you get stuck like that. Additionally, when youre doing straight backs, hold your wheel at the bottom, as when you turn it you are telling the wheel where you want the trailer to go. And dont turn past 9 and 3, anything past that is too much and you'll need to reset it. Hope this helps and dont forget to G.O.A.L.

Might be a good time to start practicing for a CDL license. If you plan on getting a big garbage truck in the Future it's probably going to be a necessity and it's never going to be a useless skill. Not sure what endorsements FL wants you to have or what kinds of vehicles you might need but I would like to hear from you what that side is going to look like
@MissingBoxcar
@MissingBoxcar 3 ай бұрын
@Ikantspell4 so for what he's doing, at minimum he would need a Class B license and I would suggest Airbrakes endorsement to maximize what he can drive. But that should be considered in 6-8 months, and not right this minute, getting a CDL is very costly and time consuming.

@MissingBoxcar why class B over just a D, are the categories different south of the border and your right about the cost it double here in Ontario after the B.C. fiasco. lol

My Dad and I have a very similar business a few years ago. Don't let these comments get you down you are doing great. I do have a few tips though: At our hight before getting a garbage truck we had two trucks and trailers making two full trips to the dump a day. We still underutilized the garbage truck. You will never want to park the garbage truck at your home. You can never get that stink out. We used can liners too at the start. We We got rid of them we lost 10% of our clients. You WILL be doing this in the rain at some point. Its gonna happen. Keep high Visibility vest and clean clothes in your truck and put grip tape on anything you use to climb on your trailer. If your area has lots of HOAs you can try bidding on a whole Neighborhood at onece. You might need to get more established first. The dump kills tires. Keep a full size spare for the trailer in your truck. We had days where we lost more than one.

I really love the response to the "What happens if I get injured", I've been working in construction most of my adult life and ultimately you can just try to avoid injuries but if they happen there's not much you can do about it. The back brace is a great choice, I've never once regretted having it when I needed it

When you’re taking your bag out. Go corner to corner and tie it like you’re tying a shoe. It’ll tie up the bag and leave you some handles to work with. And it usually works even if the bag is really full. Put a knot on a corner to keep your bags from falling in the can.

Many years ago, a dump attendant helped back me over a spool of welding wire. It wrapped around my drive shaft and broke the seal into my transmission. I cursed him as I drove forward and out of the dump. When I spotted the fluid running out of my transmission, I had to call a tow truck. Valuable lesson learned. I have came away with many flat tires over the past 50 years plus from the dump.

If you tie a small knot in the top of the can liner (making it’s diameter opening a little smaller) it will stay tight and snug in your cans and won’t fall down inside during the week. It’s a trick we use at work, trash barrels at the Channel Islands harbor beach 👍

1. LOVE LOVE LOVE this series 2. We need to readjust counting the cans. The official measure should be "two cans" (bc we need the toucans back :D). So this week, you dropped off "half a two cans" for a new customer :D 3. Question about the sunday drop offs for new cans: get these clients serviced the next day or the week after? I'd not be amused to have to move my trash from my can to yours withing that day just to get it serviced. So I am just wondering how that all works out :)

LOL too funny! 1- glad to hear it! 2 - LOL I may need to do that just so I can bring the toucans in more regularly. 3 - They get serviced the next day. We ask them to transfer the trash but also make it clear if they cannot or simply do not want to, we are happy to service them with their old cart/can for the first visit!

The book "atomic habits" by james clear, totally worth a read/listen. Summed up, for ice to melt it has to get above 32 degrees. If it starts at 20, the first 12 degrees go nearly unnoticed, and it appears that all the action takes place at 32. Just like building a business or working on a project, little by little, it builds up. Great work thanks again for sharing!

It seems like a lot of your audience who leave comments that they think you’ll fail are all the type to try something once and just abandon the whole idea completely if it doesn’t immediately work flawlessly. I’ve never started my own business (I’m only 25 so maybe some day) but i have no doubts that building a business from the ground up is a lot of trial and error and seeing what works, especially in the beginning. since you have a dump trailer, why not try to put the lift at the back of the dump trailer ( towards your truck) when trash gets backed up , slowly lift the trailer so it pushes the trash to the back of the trailer. so you have space again to use the lift . it will work until you get alot closer to filling up the dump trailer. hope that helps

I have been thinking about it over the past few weeks - how the heck can you get those trash liners out more effecient and I have a great idea - please hear it. Build yourself a small box with a slot in the top. Put one trash bag lip a little outside and pull the trash can liners from that - you could easily mount this to the side of your rig because it does not have to be big. This will save you at least 10-20 seconds on going to the front, opening the top, and getting a bag from the box up there - and again, it the box with a slit at the top just has to be big enough to surround the trash bag and you can shut the top with a latch.

I have a small garbage business myself! The one thing I’d warn you about, plan far more for insurance than you would ever think with a garbage truck. We expected $10,000 a year and once the truck was bought, our cheapest insurance quote was $65,000. Once you grow, they drop hard, but if there’s only one or two trucks, the rates can knock you out of business
@CopperCreekCuts

I already quoted a truck and it was $1200 a month. Might be because it was under CDL not DOT needed because I'm intrastate only.

Since you currently have an excess of cans, have you thought about renting them out in bulk? For example, local events, concerts, parades, 5K/10K races, festivals, etc. You provide the cans for the event as well as the can and trash removal at the conclusion of the event. Plus, since your cans are so bright and vibrant, itd be great free marketing as well. Maybe even "collab" or work with a portable toilet company since larger events typically require those. Another idea is since you already have the trailer, is to start offering junk/bulk waste removal such as appliances, mattresses, etc. A lot of stuff can be recycled as scrap metal and bring in extra money. You could offer as an add on service for current customers or one time fee for non customers.

This week's pickup looked super efficient. I can't really tell how the openings in the wood planks are aligned. I think you could have them offset, like one more towards the back, and the other side towwards the front maybe to help with trash distribution, depending on which side you are on and which way you throw? So they are not lined up across from each other.
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 ай бұрын
Only thing I worried about with that was a hole towards the back catching trash while dumping or letting bags spill out while tipping the trailer for more room (which I will have to start doing during the route in the next 10-20 cans)
@Cerulikat
@Cerulikat 3 ай бұрын
An idea that came to me for the side-loading openings is you could attach a net/webbed canvas (kind of like the ones you see on some truck tailgates) with metal grommets in the opposite corners, so you could quickly hook them closed for long hauls and have a stow hook(s) to keep it open for the quick trips. Less weight, no big gate to swing wide out of your way. Just something to consider to keep the loose stuff from flying out the side. Keep up the great work!

Hey there Brad, Its been nice seeing how you grow your business. One suggestion i would recommend is making some possible thing for the open area that you put the trash into the trailer for when you are driving either on the freeway or a while to the next house something to prevent trash from flying out of those open areas. Maybe some piece of wood that will slide in or something that is easy to put on and remove if you have to. Keep up the good work

Very good tip, thank you! Next week you will see the tarp permanently installed (well, I mean it is just bungeed down really good but I leave it in place the whole route) and I tied bags with loose items and had zero blowout. That being said, when I max out this trailer (probably another 20 cans?) I will need to rebuild the sides for more space and may do that idea then!
@TheTransitCamera
@TheTransitCamera 3 ай бұрын
For the liners, see if you can find a larger mailbox at the home center to drop the roll in. I think either a city route walkup type box with the top that opens, or a standard roadside type box with the end that opens would work. For the tarp, is there any way to pull it tighter from end to end on the trailer? It appeared to be loose or getting loose up at the roller end in that highway clip. Nice to see the new business venture growing!

I really admire the scrappiness / bootstrapping from as little investment as practical. Rather than a tipper-type setup, what about a davit/boom type of fabrication where a choker (or even perhaps a vacuum head?) grabs the top of the can liner then hoist it then manually swing to a variable location within the trailer? Like on lobster boats, etc

i try my best to explain my pro tip: keep the trailer closed on the sides and on the top, so no blowoff, but you need a place to get stuff on the trailer. Try ask some youtube fabricators to make the front wall of the trailer a pusher (or like a trash compactor) so you can dump the new stuff in the front area trough side openings, then the front wall pushes back (not have to push far, like 3feet/1meter max) to make room for the next dump. Rinse and repeat until the trailer is full. Maybe this way you can have a lift arm too, so the lift arm dumps in front of the pusher, and the pusher pushes the stuff to the back. It could be a simple scrissor-lift-like pusher attached to the inner side of the front wall of the trailer so it not wastes much place and it doesnt have to be as powerful as a hidraulic compactor, you would use it for pushing away like 500kg-s (1100punds) of stuff at max (more than that and you have to reinforce other stuff too, like a hard top for the trailer so the stuff doesnt escape during compacting)

This set up is mental!!! I don’t mind if you yell at me. After working that hard you probably need to yell!! You honestly need to just mow more and invest in a side loader garbage truck. Used of course and non cdl weight. This work you are doing with the garbage is way harder than the lawn business. I know because I’ve run a small lawn maintenance business for the past 6 years and I hear ya on that you get older and you want to replace it with something else. I’m at that point so I’ve started trying to get sales positions in basement water mitigation, windows, or siding and gutters. I live in a densely populated city and near big city’s so that option is much more viable for me as I get older. I completely understand if you’re rural. What about just hauling debris or anything else with the dump trailer vs trying to do a garbage route without a garbage truck? Not trying to add insult to injury just there’s gotta be a better way to move out of mowing.
@CopperCreekCuts
@CopperCreekCuts 2 ай бұрын
I respect your opinion but disagree. My mowing day is around 12 hours long and is 18 yards. I don't want to add more of those to my schedule. Working for 30 minutes slinging trash on this route is not worse than lawn care. I've done it for 7 years! :D So again, not saying you are wrong for you, but you are wrong for me.

I really do have a bigger question now. If you were to hire like a couple employees, would you ever buy little recycling tubs or like some 35-gallon toters for recycle pickup if you ever started recycling pickup, I feel like it would definitely cut down on trash. At my own house we have 2 95-Gallon trash carts 1 95-gallon Recycle cart and a 65-gallon recycle cart. We don't use 2 trash cans all the time but 2 recycle carts a lot of the time. Just a question that came to mind. Would be very cool to see some recycle service in the future. Thanks!

Hi ! Great video and lots of energy ! Do you think you would want to do junk removal ? Maybe someone is demolishing a shed, changing floors, or just got a bunch of trees to remove from their properties ? (Once cut of course) Edit : for the trash flying our, of course thats bad and disgusting, what about a little hinged door ? With a lock on each side so it stays open when picking up, and you can close it for the highway Edit 2 (yeah) : put a little stick or flatbar above your opening so that the aluminium rod of your tarp above doesnt get caught in the openings

I wonder if some kind of fold down platform/ramp that you could kick down at each stop (read most stops with heavier/very full cans). My thinking is you could pull the can onto and stand next to the can on this higher platform so that you aren't having to lift and throw bags near shoulder height. Another idea to help with blowout of material, try and fashion some type of barn door/like a dumpster side door, it could slide on a track, etc rather than something on a hinge that could open into traffic.

A lot depends on the type. If you get a smaller used one mounted on a truck like an F450, maybe $50K-$80K. If you are looking at the smallest of the standard garbage trucks, maybe $100K used? The issue is the ones that go for $40K on auction are all CDL machines, which I can't/won't drive, and also don't want to worry about repairs.

I think you're well on your way to figuring this thing out🤓☝️....🤔 I'm wondering if you purchased a few sheets of expanded metal and bolted them to the top of your wood sides with Lag bolts and washers if that would eliminate most your issues of the loose thrash? Obviously you would probably need some boards to seam the sheets together. I don't think painting the metal would be necessary being that it's only bolted to wood? 🤔?...anyway, just random thoughts as I watched your footage Lol😆
