Hi ***** ! Great to see other teachers out there who aren't afraid to teach belting. Great vid, especially mentioning the importance of breath support and that this way of singing can sometimes fatigue the voice (different than vocal damage). There is one area where I diverge from you, though. You mentioned the sound comes straight out of the mouth. While it is true that you can do this (to an extent), you most certainly can use head resonance while still keeping the exact same intensity of a belt. The head resonance, I've found, actually helps to coordinate things more efficiently. There is no way I could belt in my upper range comfortably without head resonance. Actually, I notice that head resonance allows you to pressurize the sound way more than just letting it go out the mouth, effectively engaging the chest voice even more strongly. Can you explain more of what you mean, though, by "letting the air out" vs. "putting the air in"? Thanks!

I feel like the occasional chest dragging is good for building strength in the mix. I think those who say never bring up your chest voice are incorrect because if you don't work on building chest voice, how will you ever mix it with head voice? I think Justin was right when he says you can use this voice but not to do it too much.

I know exactly this feeling!!! For 20 years I was convinced that I am a bass-baritone with an F#4 as my highest note, feeling cursed and never being able to sing a pop or rock song in its original tuning. Three years ago I started vocal lessons, found and developed my mix voice and nowadays I am able to hit a C#5. It's all about technique man! It makes almost everything possible!!

Hi, Justin. love your vids, and I'm buying your book. Okay, I havent' watched this series yet, but: what the hell is belting?? The word itself turns me off, makes me think of all those screachers on American Idol. I play (quiet, muted) trumpet, and I least sing well enough to get small venue gigs without having tomatoes thrown at me, or customers storming out. Mostly mainstream swing era jazz and some blues. Yes, I need a lot of work before I can call myself a "pro." I never "belt" anything! I do use dynamics and do my best to swing. In small rooms, less volume is more. "Belting" sounds like something rock and pop singers singers do. I've had a few vocal teachers, and none of them ever mentioned belting. Do I really need belting? Okay, I'm ranting. I'll bite the bullet and watch the vid, because I've seen a bunch of your vids and they're extremely helpful. Hey, best of luck with the book sales.

Now I know why I can sing this song perfectly, because I've not mastered my mix yet so that I use to belt. Didn't know there were songs where you were supposed to belt, tho.
