How much farther can we take the long range 100_ series? There are plenty more long range topics to cover out here, but this one might be the grand finale for the series, discussing simply shooting out to 1000 yards to now sitting down with Ian Klemm and Jeff Heeg, Extreme Long Range (ELR) competitor, to discuss taking rifles out to some truly mind-boggling distances. Whether it’s a .22 beyond 500 yards or a souped up CheyTac cartridge at 2 miles and beyond, this particular shooting sport requires a great deal of science, excellent team communication and some pretty neat guns. Give Long Range 1004 a listen and let us know what you think!
As always - let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

Well then, that means I am shooting ELR with my 22lr rifle. Got like a 14 inch drop at 100 yards, so you can imagine what shooting 300+ looks like through the scope. But nothing more satisfying that the sound you eventually get back from hitting steel that far on a quiet day.

This was a really great video. Thanks to all of you and of course Jeff and Ian that gave us a little glimpse into what is involved it shooting at those kinds of ranges.

Thank you gentlemen... What a fascinating and fun watch. I just love the detail involved in this class/types of shooting (PSR,F-Class, ELR). Example, the "ghost" called "Sight Correction Factor".... wow! If I may humble add: In regards "Sniper Team/s" (aka "Cells") in most military's, it is always the Junior member of the Team that is on the gun, and the Senior conducting Spotting/Observation. While comms is personal in the field, most of the time, the only thing the Spotter wants to hear from the shooter, after the shot, is if they "pulled" and in what direction ie: "Pulled left". "Air Density Altitude" - something we deal with in aviation everyday... simply put; AIR GETS THINNER WITH ALTITUDE. Done :-) Temperature and Relative Humidity also have an effect... to a lesser degree on us Humans... However Most Humans begin to feel the effect above 3000-5000 feet ASL (above sea level) if they live at sea level... Aircraft, old engines (w/ carbs) fast moving projectiles "feel the effect" no matter the altitude, the temp and the RH. Thanks again.

Got this lead to watch this from a friend who is part of the australians Match rifle competition and he asked me to watch this to learn about RLE shooting, thanks To australian Match Rile team member.. :) Also it has been over 40 years since i shot a weapons system basically was in the Cadets and shot the australian LSR L1A1 7.62mm X 51 army isse weapon system with iron sights only at 400 yards and got a score of 98 out of 100 and i was only 14 years old and just recently was asked to go to a shoot meet, which i thought was going to be basically your standard rimfire military type weapons system ,WOW did i get my head kicked in ( Brain ) all i seen were basically custom F/ Class weapon systems and my first time shooting with those weapon systems i got a score of 38 or of 50 and then the 2nd time got a score of 46 out of 50, but with match rifle 7.62mm X 50 at 1,200 yards as well? So these guys have hit it on the head, i dont believe it matters which type of round you use if your going to shoot that round way past it's effect range, it would be considered ELR shooting, cheers and keep up the great work. :) Also the guy hiow asked me to look this up is going to the World championships in England in a couple of months, i hope he wins and does his best there. :)

Open sight M249 1000m popped up. Squeezed it off expecting a burst. But only one pop. The target still dropped. Last shot on the belt. Felt pretty good. The 1000m man size target looks like a spec. Especially when the range has tall grass.

I know video is 3 years old, just watching now. My buddy built Ian’s and his team mates rifles. Also I see no one took the time to mention NRA Whittington Center where they hold King of 2 Mile in Raton, NM. If you want to learn about PLR and ELR, go to Whittington Center and sign up for their PLR and ELR courses.

Take all these factors, add speed and bearing of you and the target, pitch and roll and you have the firing solution for battleships.

Just a questions guys if you can answer it, if you have a left spin barrel and the coriolis effect will be different and also the barrel twist ratio comes into effect and then based on that corlis effect of the earth spinning, dont you have to put into your calculations the velocity and wind effect and weather ie: HOT/ Wet or very humid as well, is there any difference to the calculations from right hand twist and left hand twist and also the barrel twist, from say 9 to 1 to 11 to one, how much difference is that going to make in the calculations when shooting 308 rounds at 1,200 yards, if you get my drift or meaning? Also i believe that using the standard weights of a 308 round say 175 grain, ( with all the various manufacturers out there) v's a 210 grain and a projectile which was made for ELR and the powders and firing pins will all make a difference, basically what experience is there ie: have anyone tested these left hand twisted barrels at various ratios V's right hand twisted barrels at various ratios, especially when it comes down to F/ Class and Match rilfe competition shooting ?
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 5 жыл бұрын
Hard to say for sure - we haven't seen that test if there is one. Indeed your spin drift will be the opposite of those with a RHT, but if the ratios are the same, it's hard to believe there would be much difference otherwise, and any difference it does have will simply be calculated by a ballistics solver which you can enter that information into. ballistic scientists do all the work - we just need to plug in the right info!
@7071t6
@7071t6 5 жыл бұрын
THE BC issues is very simple ijn my mind, basically based on the shape of the projectile and its profile and the physics of the weather is applied to a computer and then make sure the powder and rile barrel is very consistent and if you can do the physics and other maths you can get pretty good at developing a app which you could use or sell, but again the biggest issue is the weather not so much the maths ?
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 5 жыл бұрын
Consistency is indeed very essential. The biggest issue does wind up just being the world around us. We can try to make everything as perfect as we can in a vaccuum (Or computer app) but inevitably, the world doesn't care much for our math/science - it just does what it wants and does it when it wants :)

Guys just a quick question has anyone put a real good camera on a spotters equipment to show you the trace and filmed it, to show how much adjustment is them required in ELR shooting via the scope, i understand that having various factors that come into it ie: wind and weather etc, but to show how hard it is to translate that information seen via the spotters lens and then verbally tell the shooter, adjust 10 MOA to the right or left and then also the use of the rifle and adjust that extra MOA to hit a target at over 2,000 yards, now that would be a cool video to show and watch, i hope it can be done one day, i have seen ELR shooting, but not competition series at all and i an wondering WHY thats all ?
@VortexNation
@VortexNation 5 жыл бұрын
You can find plenty of videos of bullet trace if you search around. Attaching a camera or even modern camera phone via an adapter like a Phoneskope adapter can give you these videos. It's very cool and great to watch back in your freetime!

I didn't really understand the 20 moa rail and then the adjustable rail. As a new person how does that figure into a zero and then moa or mills at various yardages or do you just ignore it on your calculations?
@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz
@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz Жыл бұрын
You would factor that into the ballistic calculations, it certainly can't be ignored.
