Beaver felt cowhoy hats are cool in summer, warm in winter, water proof in rain, youvcan fill up euth water & let your horse drink ,you can to use it to bsthe ,by useing your wealstern bandana as a wash cloth & hat to rinse washcloth out to bathe more of your body,... Fill the hat with water & pour over your body after you soaped up,for a nice outdoor shower... Then you can wash it ,wring it out,reshape it ,dry it,you got a brand new hat...

I enjoyed the Beaver facts; grew up in Texas panhandle, my mother had a full length Beaver fur coat that was beautiful. I have pictures of her outside in the snow wearing it; we later moved to California and she had it made into a shawl. By then people were throwing red paint on folks who wore fur coats. After she passed, I sold it to a 2nd hand store in town but now I wish I still had it. Thanks for another great show ya'll.

Good morning, Al, Ben , and Jason! Al, I had no idea beavers are so large. That was quite a trek bringing them in from the traps. Ben, your pepper harvesting video with Corbin and Buggie was so precious. Little Miss Elizabeth is beautiful and growing so fast. Jason, I’m excited about your end of year video. Your pig video this week was excellent. Thanks to all of you for this weekly Homestead Shop Talk video.

You guys had an interesting week. I think most people don't appreciate how food is acquired and the purpose of animals in the first place. Spoiled by convinience. I could buy a quilt manufacted in another country for pennies compared to making it myself. But the process and love are missing. I appreciate how things are done intentionally. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate some conviniences. Good week to you three.

FYI--Cowboys know their cowboy hats are made out of beaver. They are literally called "beaver felt" cowboy hats. These are the ones typically worn in the northern U.S. and Canada. Southern cowboys (Texas) often wear straw cowboy hats.

When stationed at Thule Greenland in 72, I was gifted with walrus mittens that were tanned locally. I didn't realize that local tanning methods used body fluids. I had brought the mittens into my room and left them out on a table. The building management was going nuts looking for the "smell" and identified my room as the source. They insisted on the removal of the mittens. I double-wrapped the mittens in plastic bags and put them in an outside frozen storage. The mittens stayed in the plastic bags for over a decade before the smell dissipated after I returned stateside.

This was an "S tier" level show this week guys. Al, you would love a mini truck like Jason's, opt for the dump bed and lift kit. Jason, that door design turned out very nicely. I had a friend that was famous for his beaver pelt hat "the Russian" but he was born in Ashland, VA. LoL Ben, knee high deer moccasins would have you boys wanting to wear boots. 😛 Or hide parkas are "easy" and practical for your lifestyle.

Not much of a fan of building and messing with the machinery, but did start watching LA when I saw one single man building an entire barn while his wife had to go to work. I watch StL because Jason is funny and I love his wife. I watch HH for the family and their life managing as they do. Thank you all for the videos. Oh, and I love escargot cooked in garlic butter, so am not squeamish about eating creatures unless they haven't been skinned properly and end up tasting like hair.

Yeah, Christmas was pretty much going down to Montgomery Wards and putting stuff on lay away or using the bank Christmas fund account to do your purchasing. Christmas fund savings accounts were opened or restarted every February around President's day. You deposited your paycheck on Friday and the bank automatically moved the amount you set into the Christmas fund savings for you. Heck in those days it earned a flat five percent compounded quarterly. Kind of a racket that quarterly compounding though.

Jason, it is not the power outage that takes out the computer circuits on those fridges. Either unplug them when they go down and wait until the power has been on for a while, or run them through a UPS system for computers that is heavy enough. The new "solar generator/home backup units will clean up the power issues for the computer circuits too. It is the surges and irregular power when it first comes back on.

Ben seriously look into brain tanning. The hardest part is getting the brain out of the skull. Every animal's brain is just the right amount for their hide from beaver to cattle. Amazing process. Also look into slipping the hair to make buckskin leather.
@davidgetchell3633Ай бұрын
I was told once, that all creatures have enough brains to tan themselves but TWO ( a chicken & a teenager) !!
@markpashia7067Ай бұрын
@@davidgetchell3633 Teenagers have enough matter, they just rarely use all of it. And I would not be surprised if chickens have enough to tan their skin, but I doubt it for turkeys especially a fifty pounder. Poultry leather?
