Really enjoying your podcasts. I’m in a bit of awe at your ability to work such complex patterns, gorgeous yarns not seen so much here in NY. I feel that there’s a handful of heavily advertised yarn companies and the smaller producers have wonderful yarns that aren’t in the mainstream. Your chosen patterns are challenging and lovely.

Great podcast as always. I love hearing about all your projects. Congrats on making the decision to quit drinking alcohol. I stopped drinking alcohol a little over seven years ago - Sept. 1, 2017. It wasn't serving any good purpose in my life. I was 58 when I stopped and I feel so much healthier at my current age of 65 than I did while I was drinking. I get up early and workout, eat healthier and overall am a much happier, content person. So, no, you are not alone. Great job on recognizing you would rather feel healthier.

I’m glad our community shares their methods and techniques to conquer challenges as well. Tash. I decided to relegate drinking alcohol consumption for special occasions in 2016. Congratulations! That’s awesome. My daughter-in-law felt the same way. I think you need to be cheered on! 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I quit drinking the weekend Wayne Gardner won the Phillip Island Motorcycle Grand Prix, I was there yet so hung over I couldn’t enjoy the day for the amount of throwing up I was doing…lol! And my mum was a raging alcoholic who died a few months after that race. And this year, after 44 years of doing it, I quit smoking! I honestly never thought I would quit yet back in April I did. I’m not happy about the ten kilo weight gain though I am pleased I don’t cough (hack) anymore. One day soon I will try walking for exercise and see if I can turn some of this fat into muscle 😊. It does seem like we all quit things in our own time and in our own way and the last thing we are ever thinking about is causing anyone else shame. PS. I love your FO Tash, it’s beautiful.

Thank you so much Debbie for sharing your experience with quitting alcohol and smoking and how beneficial that has been for you. The unwanted weight gain is a bummer but the health benefits of quitting are so huge. Congratulations on pushing through with quitting smoking. I used to smoke too - I gave up around 20 years ago and am SO glad to not be a smoker anymore. I now feel the same way about being a non-drinker and all i feel right now is relief. Walking for exercise is lovely and gentle. I listen to podcasts or audiobooks or chat with friends while i do it and dont even notice that i am exercising. Add knitting while i walk as well and it is very much my happy place. Thank you again for sharing and for the encouragement. xx

Very nice things you showed us once more! I wish I could dive in that volt of yours from which beautiful things keep coming out! NOW, YOU'RE REALLY BRAVE in sharing that decision of yours. I also found myself drinking much more than I wanted!!! My husband retired, and suddenly, we were drinking every night. We put on weight, and I realized I was at a stage of my life I shouldn't be drinking so much, but didn't make the cut! Guess what? A stage one breast cancer showed on my mammography!!! I am fine but this was really a wake up call for us. Alcool really is dangerous and I am not 20 anymore 😊 . Also must minimise the possibility of the cancer recurring, of course!!! And stay fit or I will not like the way I look in my knits...thats the worst thing I can imagine😊!!!! So I quit...no problems. My husband just reduced, but he will get there! You're defenetly not alone and I am sure you gave some strength to lots of people ... and I felt really warm inside when you spoke about this! ❤lots and lots of love from Lisbon 🥰

I know you probably aren't a fan of adding elastic to the neckline of garments to fix issues but I did want to share a sewing thread called Eloflex. It's a stretch thread used for sewing knits that could possibly be used to stabilize a neckline at times just woven through due to the thin nature it would not be seen or felt. You could add however much stability necessary in order for the neckline not to roll out. Always love your makes and podcast. TFS 💙

Loving that Shore Tee! One thing that you could try (and easily undo if doesn’t work); is to try crochet with slip stitches around the collar… it may pull in to help avoid that stretching out. Might be worth a go before you snip anything… Looking forward to both your stash video and content about Bali! Thanks for sharing about the alcohol decision. Coincidentally I’d decided to stop as of tomorrow ( today is Canadian Thanksgiving); and both my husband and I decided we’d give this a go until the holidays.. Thank you for sharing about your decision around drinking. I was in a very similar spot to you about 5-7 years ago where I was drinking every day, usually 2-3 glasses of wine. That’s a lot. I had a lot of stress at the time with my elderly dad, and the drinking made me put on weight too. Dad has since passed, and after that I totally lost my desire to drink. I didn’t like the way it made me feel. Maybe getting older has a lot to do with it…I’m 64. I do drink socially very occasionally. Anyway, good on you for stopping now…it’s so much better for your health.

What an unexpected revelation you shared Tash. I had often thought while watching you “I’ll bet Tash is not a drinker” especially the way you can plough through so many projects but you surprised me tonight. I am a drinker and that reflects in my knitting at times. During Covid it increased and then losing my eldest son in 2021 during lockdown has been devastating and life altering and unfortunately seen my alcohol consumption increase. But it’s strange I’m not really enjoying it lately or getting anything out of it. I’ve listened to the alcohol experiment pre COVID and took a month off and it was great but then went back to it. I’m 58 and I think it’s time to at least drastically reduce my intake. Especially as I now have a 13 month old grandson. As you would know Leanne from the Knitty Stew podcast gave up alcohol many years ago too and I find her an inspiration plus a fabulous podcaster. Keep up the great work. You are an inspiration to us all 💕😍💕😍
@mostlyknitting2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your encouragement and your share Donna. I am so sorry to hear you lost your eldest son. Life can throw some awful blows at us. Drinking “helped” me get through some painful experiences but the reality is, it didnt fix anything - it just made me temporarily care less about the pain. Which doesnt actually solve the problems. Then it became a habit that was hard to break. I am very glad to have just removed the energy around it - I dont have to think about it any more. Which is wonderful. But we all get there in our own time. I have been conscious of this in my life for over a decade and yet have only just made the commitment now. I feel so good though, i dont think i will ever look back. X

Welcome back Tash, it was lovely to watch your new episode 😊. So sorry that your husband got sick during your holidays and glad to hear that he has recovered. I am knitting the Robinia light sweater also by Anne Ventzel and it has a similar neckline as the Shore tee. It has 2 rows of full twisted rib at the boatneck, but it is knit with 3 mm needles, while the sweater is knit with 3.5 mm. Even though the neckline was knit with smaller needles, it is curling down while I am knitting it. I saw someone commented about it on Ravelry and Anne’s response was that it will be fixed by blocking it. I really hope so 😊. Congratulations on quitting alcohol. It is a very good decision. Two years ago I was at the similar stage with my alcohol consumption as you described, I was drinking much more than I wanted to . My last drink was on the 9th of December in 2022 and I have not drunk any alcohol since then. It was the best decision, I felt and still feel very good about it. Alcohol does not do any good in your life, as you said. Quitting is just a matter decision and if you made up your mind, it is much easier than you think 😊.

I have stage 4 breast cancer and was a drinker for many years before finding out my illness. I know it’s not a proven fact but for me personally I believe the cancer was fed by the alcohol, which turns to sugar, which cancer lives on (and estrogen in my case). Lovely job on the Isabell Kreamer sweater! Have you considered doing fewer increases for the Clay sweater so you have a smaller than 39" chest? The design ease looks like a lot of the Petite Knits patterns. At 156 cm and less than 50kg, I don't like things to look like they didn't come in my size. I've been sewing for over 60 years, and the thing I like about sewing is that I can not only have the color and fabric that I prefer, I can make the garment fit me properly.
@mostlyknitting2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much Jillian. I decided to go down a needle size and i think that should help to get my gauge a bit tighter which i would like anyway, and to make the FO a bit smaller. I do want a bit of positive ease so hopefully this will make it just that little bit less. :)
@jilliankonig27592 ай бұрын
@@mostlyknitting I was a math teacher (retired now). Just wondered if you have a formula for how much smaller to go on the needle size to end up with a finished size between sizes on a pattern. I've just been knitting a gauge and dividing the number of stitches for the body (after separating for the sleeves) by my gauge to estimate the final size. Is that what you're doing? Thanks!
@mostlyknitting2 ай бұрын
I dont really have a set rule as far as needle size. I have to like the fabric, of course. If i am diligent, then i knit a gauge swatch and take the size i am making, multiply by the pattern gauge and divide by my gauge. That gets me to what size to expect the FO to be. Being a retired maths teacher, i suspect you have this concept down. :)

As usual, I had to stop the video and run over to Ravelry to add a pattern to my queue! This time it is Moby. What a pretty sweater, and it looks like a very engaging pattern. I noticed you don’t swatch in the round. Do you feel like not doing so affects your gauge when you knit a garment? It seems like so many of my knitting gurus are adamant that if you knit in the round you must always swatch in the round, but let’s be honest, it is kind of a pain to do it!
@mostlyknitting2 ай бұрын
I have found that my gauge is the same so I dont bother swatching in the round. I agree - it is a real pain and I dont like doing it so when i realised it made no difference for me, i stopped doing it. :)

What a great podcast and thanks for sharing all your beautiful works and your personal stuff too. I'm seriously considering make that same life change - as a retiree I find myself "socializing i.e. drinking" more than I'd like so you have given me something to think about for sure! Question about knitting - I'm slowly advancing my knitting skills (I currently call myself and adventurous beginner/intermediate but theres always something new to learn) but I have never done a provisional cast on and I'm wondering when you pick those stitches up aren't you then knitting in the opposite direction? Not sure my question makes sense but I"m guessing it is not noticeable since it is a pretty standard technique.
@mostlyknitting2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much Stephanie. And thank you for the encouragement. As for the provisional cast on - you are right - you do knit in the opposite direction. So you do end up half a stitch off in either end. But because of the nature of knitting looking the same from either direction, it isnt noticeable. :)

Hi Tash, if you decide to undo the collar of your Shore tee would you consider filming it? I am not familiar with that technique .

Thanks Suzy. It has actually blocked out well so i dont have to do it - hooray. But if i have to do this in a future project, i will definitely film it. :)

Hi Tesh, which of the two Skimmer Socks do you recommend, the “Revisited” version of the original? Many thanks, Debbie

Hi Debbie. I have only made the revisited version so can’t compare but obviously I really like this one. ;)

Hello. Your knits are beautiful. Just have a question about your Moby sweater swatch. First let me say that I have only knit garment and your knitting experience far exceeds mine. Please do not take offense. I have watched many knitting podcasts and I’ve always seen the swatches knit in pattern as in with the texture/cables included.If that is really not necessary then that’s good to know. Happy knitting and best wishes.

Hi Donna Thank you so much for pointing this out. So many sweaters i have knit, even if they are textured, still give a gauge for stockinette. I mindlessly did a gauge swatch and didnt check the pattern page on ravelry. Thank you so much for drawing that to my attention. That may actually work really well for me as i want the sweater to be smaller than the smallest size anyway. I will mention this in my next podcast. Thanks again, Tash :)
