As always, brilliant work. I do think you broached a topic that has no good answer. The current system for response to an enemy nuclear launch is the best bad option. As much as it may be fun or even fashionable to do so, it is lazy to confuse the rhetoric of the current President with his actions to date regarding Foreign Policy. The situation with North Korea comes to mind in this regard. Both Iran and North Korea wanted to know what the policy would be with Trump after 8 years of appeasement that tacitly condoned their misbehavior. Now they know. There has to be a separate policy for friends, enemies, vassals, and bad actors. Upon occasion, the various parties require confirmation of their status in the geo-political food chain.

The Biden administration is better for Fred Kaplan because nuclear war is on peoples minds these days and he gets a bigger audience. I love that way of putting it, "Holiday from history." People genuinely proposed (like Fukuyama) the idea that "history" was over and it was just a matter of tying up loose ends. Liberal democracy, maybe with a smidge of socialism thrown in, had won the game. The Soviet Union collapsed, I was born the following day, and it's been peachy ever since.
@Len124
@Len124 4 жыл бұрын
@Infectious Legume You missed the point of my comment. The fact that that's what you took from it makes me think you might be American? If not, there are those triggered by the word "socialism" far and wide, but the word "socialism" isn't quite as taboo elsewhere. I'm Canadian, where a member of our relatively rightwing party, the Progressive Conservatives, would be committing career suicide to even suggest attacking _socialized_ medicine. "Socialism," just like the term "Liberalism" or "Libertarianism" are so vague nowadays that they're almost meaningless, and sometimes contradictory, when used in certain context, especially modern American political discourse. The collective ownership of the means of production--whether those "means" are machines producing physical items in a factory, or the "means" are the healthcare infrastructure, training, hospitals, etc. and the "product" is healthcare--are more than simple factory floors. My point was actually to make fun of Fukuyama's idea that liberal (as in, _economic_ "liberalism") democracy is the "end of history," not support it. Many of the ideas we associate with public safety-nets and socialized healthcare were the products of democratic socialism, which was a model opposed to communism that posited reform (rather than revolution) could add varying degrees of collective or public ownership into the economy where a profit motive was thought to lead to immoral inequality in certain sectors. I'm not making an argument for it, I was commenting on a geopolitical model that ultimately proved to be false and didn't realize simply saying "socialism" would distract you. Maybe economic safety-net programs can exist in a purely non-socialist context, I'm not making an argument to the contrary, but these concepts do have roots in things like 19th Century economics, Keynesianism, and some good results from otherwise bad regimes. I couldn't care less about the label--call in banana bread--but history is history and just as you might use the term "republic" to refer to VASTLY different systems with some very basic similarities, like not having a monarch, so too can socialism mean very different things. If you call the US a "republic" and the former German Democratic Republic one as well, sure they have certain criteria like the lack of a monarch, but one is an authoritarian state. Just as North Korea describes itself as "socialist" nation doesn't mean it has much in common with my home country Canada, which has programs based on some programs that were first used in nations that would completely describe themselves as socialist, but combined with a representative democratic government. You know that crazy-ass propaganda you see from communist states that are clearly based on exaggerated notions of the West and Capitalism? Well, unfortunately, the US and many in conservative movements, are still suffering from the counter propaganda enacted by the American government that wanted to make it real easy for people to not have to think. They did it with a blanket term that made a black and white issue out of a very nuanced one by giving people a trigger word like "socialism" and trying to imply that even simple programs are either a slippery slope to communism or are not socialism at all; despite history to the contrary.
@Len124
@Len124 4 жыл бұрын
@Infectious Legume The Canadian healthcare system _is_ socialized medicine. Hospitals are 100% publicly funded through a single-payer government insurance scheme that the patient never sees or is aware of. The hospitals may be either provincially owned and operated or privately owned and operated (but still completely government funded) by non-profit organizations. The exceptions are oral and eye health, which are operated through regulated private insurance (which I think is a weakness in the system). Pharmaceuticals are not included in full, this is where private insurance comes in, but there is a generic government option and the Canadian government does not allow the companies to charge whatever they want. They negotiate to keep prices low, which is why the same drugs are often 1/10th of the price as soon as you cross the border into Canada. You may be confusing the Canadian system with the UK, which is privately operated, but completely funded through public insurance. Even so, that still fits the definition of socialized medicine. *If Canada isn't socialized medicine, then nothing is* and the term loses all meaning. Either way, this is semantics designed to pussyfoot around a particular word, but semantics you're wrong about nonetheless. To quote the wikipedia article I'm about to cite, "Because of historically negative associations with socialism in American culture, the term is usually used pejoratively in American political discourse." That pejorative use is foreign in countries that have had it for half a century or more. Socialism is a more nuanced concept here. Here's an article on American discourse about socialized medicine: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialized_medicine Primary sources are the bottom if you'd rather refer to those. Here's one about universal medicine in general: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_health_care As for the second part of your comment, there's not much to respond to except that you speak as if Marx is the inventor of socialism and that it's synonymous with communism. Socialism precedes Marx and Communism is a particular, extreme brand of it. Democratic socialists are often at odds with Marxists. That doesn't mean they don't overlap (like in the case of means of production), but whether or not Marx was vague has no bearing on what others thought. He was speaking from a 19th Century perspective, but even then he didn't mean factory based industry exclusively. That would cut out many industries that are controlled by his boogeyman, the bourgeoisie. Services are a more exaggerated part of the economy today, but were never excluded from any socialist model.

He seems to examine all available material before making up his mind or doesn't if the data doesn't sufficiently draw a conclusion that doesn't counter any other plausible. I'd like to believe that is how I think. Too many times I found out I didn't do that correctly. Still working on it.
