Really just wanted to know what exactly you were using for the vapor barrier, and how you were installing it. Didn’t quite get what I came for. There’s some different info out there and about to use this Roxel on my own project in upstate New York

Hi Ed, thanks for watching, sorry you didn't get the answer you were looking for. I'm actually releasing a full video on vapor barrier in the next few days. But just to sum up - I'm using a 6 mil VB from home depot or any other supplier. I use acoustic sealant from that I run along the whole perimeter of the wall. Then you stretch out your VB along the whole wall and staple it in place without overdoing it. You're trying to do a fully sealed envelope so you want to tape any seams and where the different pieces connect at the walls and ceiling. You then want to make sure all your vapor boxes for electrical are also taped up. Stay tuned for the next video you can get the full explanation. Thanks for watching. Good luck with your project.

Thanks for this. I’m installing rockwool 16 center (3 inch thick) into the true 2x4 walls, and 6-INCH up into the 2x8 ceilings (for soundcontrol) in a 2 story 130 year old house converted into 2 apartments (1st and second floor). My question regards installing 6-inch thick rockwool into the 2x8 ceiling joists bays. QUESTION: 1. Should I push the 6-inch rockwool all the way up and flushed against the ceiling deck between the 2x8 joist bay so there is one inch between the insulation and where the drywall will meet the bottom of the joists? OR 2.should I push the 6 inch just enough so that it meets the bottom of the joists to come into contact with the 0.5 inch drywall? This way there will be a 1 inch gap between the ceiling deck and the 6 inch insulation between the joist bays. Thanks for your video sir.
@HugoBuilds2 жыл бұрын
I would have the insulation on the bottom of the ceiling joists so you have an inch air space at the top adding extra air insulation. Hope that helps.

My Batts have a flexible side arrow (any area to the right of the burn track pattern which is firm). Is there a trick to what side you trim off if needed or if you insert a side first? Also I'm no expert but is a double vapor barrier bad?

Sold this stuff at Home Hardware for four years. Can confirm, this stuff is annoyingly heavy. Planning on using it for a garage soon. Edit: Best part about this stuff is that there's instructions on the side of the bags for installing it around wires, boxes, etc. Pretty beginner friendly.

Hey Hugo, Hope all is well. Do you have a basic framing video? I am a novice but would like to learn from you on how to frame something basic. Like how do you know where to double and triple your 2"x4" for extra support? I'm going to attempt to build a 10'x10' storage tool shed. Many thanks, Jorge
@HugoBuilds3 жыл бұрын
I can't say that I do. I didn't do the framing myself in this one. For a 10' x 10' shed you're probably good to give it a shot. I would suggest watching Larry Haun's series, he's well regarded as one of the best. His framing videos are awesome. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4LQpWVtprNpd6s He will teach you way more than I ever could. Thanks for watching!

Great video, definitely going to use mineral insulation instead of spray foam!
@HugoBuilds4 жыл бұрын
I think that's a great choice. Spray foam often sounds like a great idea but it has a lot of downsides as well.
@G5Ckxew4 жыл бұрын
@@HugoBuilds I was going to go with $40k worth of spray foam until my county building & zoning department told me I would have needed to use drywall as a protective fire barrier. Drywall in a garage is a big F-U-CK-NO for me because I want to be able to get back into my walls someday to add speaker wires, network cables, security camera wiring or whatever the future technology may be. I was also pleasantly surprised by the fire resistance and price of Rockwool. It's not the perfect solution, but it should cost less than half the price for a better R-Value. I can even install it myself. I'm sold! By the way - great tip on slitting the back of the Rockwool for the electrical wiring. I'm sharing this video for that tip alone!

Have an unfinished basement that has the pink batt, but some got wet due to some water getting in through some penetrations from some contractor work. Can rockwool be installed with a vapor barrier and left like that? We aren’t planning on finishing the basement anytime soon.
@HugoBuilds2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do that. Should not be an issue - it's probably more stable that pink batt just left exposed.

We are looking to install this in our attic in North Carolina. Do we need a vapor barrier under our drywall when using this? We have been told not to use a vapor barrier in this climate and to use unfaced fiberglass insulation if we use that sort of a product. Can you please set us straight? Does it need to be covered on the top up in the attic?

Hi Christina, not sure for you climate to be honest. I would follow any local guidelines and building code. You can always just call up your local inspector and see what he has to say. Sorry couldn't be of more help. Good luck!

About how many stud bays can you cover (standard 8ft 16" OC bay) with one bag of this stuff? Trying to figure out how much I need to buy. Thanks for the video!

I have very thin depth of cavity in my attic wall, do you recommend holding RockWool in place with a metal wire? and secondly, do you recommend RockWool batts for a hot attic in the middle of the desert? (trying to keep attic cool as fuck)
@HugoBuilds Жыл бұрын
I couldn't tell you for the desert. I'm in a northern climate. if you havea thin cavity, you might not get enough insulation. You might check out spray foam. It has more R value per inch.
@jrm68495 жыл бұрын
Very informative video but I got a question on how to deal with non standard wall cavities? I got wall cavities i want to install rockwool but the wall cavities are anywhere from 15 to 18 inches which would leave a gap on the side?
@HugoBuilds5 жыл бұрын
Not quite sure what the most efficient mehod is. It think you buy a size bigger and cut them down. You could always put them sideways which would be a bunch of cuts but at least you are cutting down some waste.
@HugoBuilds5 жыл бұрын
You don't want to leave a gap tho or that's defeating the purpose. Cavity needs to be full. No where for cold outside air to pass through.

Can you add rockwool on an existing wall? Meaning, can you cut a two foot section towards the bottom of the wall all the way across, then stuff the rockwool upwards til it hits the ceiling?
@HugoBuilds4 жыл бұрын
I think there will be a lot of friction between the wall and the Rockwool batts. They might end up getting crushed on the way up. There are other methods to fill existing stud cavities that might be more efficient!
@insaneguy84 жыл бұрын
What other ways? Besides spray insulation? And what other way is there that provided as much sound insulation equivalent or as good as rockwool?
@HugoBuilds4 жыл бұрын
@@insaneguy8 You can do blown-in cellulose. They make a 2" or so hole at the top of the stud cavity and a 2" hole at the bottom for air to circulate. They shoot it in the top and in theory it should fill in all the gabs between the wires and stuff. I think that's one of the only ways to fairly easily add insulation with minimal disruption. You can also do exterior insulation which is very efficient if you plan on redoing your siding or something. Generally it's not a very easy thing to do without pretty major tear down unfortunately. Good luck!

How would I install this on a flash surface could I use glue? What sort of glue?
@HugoBuilds4 жыл бұрын
I don't think you ever glue this.. if you're installing in something other than wall cavities they have other products made of the same material which are more rigid. usually there come with a light metal clipping system that you install and it holds them in place. Very common practice on high-rise/commercial construction.

Isn't rockwool seriously bad for the human health? No matter how well it is sealed behind the wall the fiber particals are so small that will filter through the sealed osb or drywall finish? There has do be an alternative ?!
@HugoBuilds4 жыл бұрын
it's quite the opposite.. it's literally just spun rock fibre. It's much better than traditional fibre glass insulation or even spray foam that will off-gas in the house for years potentially. Technically the house breathes towards the outside because of the vapour barrier even if there was anything to off-gas here.
