I finished being a mechanic in 1986 and changed careers. This channel reminds me of that era working on all these pre 90s cars. I owned a 72 LJ GTR, a ZB Fairlane and a 67 HR Holden in that period. I'd love to see you get hold of those now. But you'd need deep pockets I bet. Love your work.

Another Great Vid Mick. Just a hint for what it's worth. Learning from previous experience, I always take the castellated nut of and turn it upside down then thread it back on to ball joint. That way, if it is difficult to dislodge the ball joint when you give it a hit, you avoid damaging the top of the nut which I have done in the past. Causing lots of Obscenities to oneself...Cheers Matey..

fantastic info thankyou so much the age old saying comes up "with you want something done properly you have to do it yourself i paid someone to do the lower control arm bushes and ball joints on my WB about 3 months back took it back to them because there was play and noise oh the upper ball joint right side is stuffed i replaced it myself this arvo checked the play with wheel back on it was just the same so with wheel back off i had another look turns out the lower right ball joint was the problem the boot was stuffed and no grease pretty ordinary considering only three months old i'm not happy so tomorrow with luck weather permitting i'll tackle the bottom stuffed one,thanks for the very thorough vid man very concise explanation of how to do it! The best thing of working on HQ's is a couple of hours undoing the front wiring, removing a dozen bolts, then the whole front clip comes off with help from a mate. Engine and suspension are totally free to work on. Plus only needing a basic SAE tool kit. Yes I know those inner guard bolts a pain, but it's worth it.

Mate you can buy ultra low king spring fronts now & I tend to use Torana rear springs & air shocks as they are much lower & when we were piss cruising with the boys we pulled into the petrol station & chucked some air in the rear shocks to stop Eager rub 😀 & On the top of the shocks when undoing the nut I used mini vice grips as it would hold against the inner graud ! I'm not sure if it's a aussie assembled Hq's but the Hq's I've owned in New Zealand are all front discs , so weird seeing front drums & look worse to get the shocks / springs out .haha ! Another great vid Mick, good explanation and guidance, would have been nice to see how you actually removed / installed the ball joints as they are a prick of a thing if you've never done them before. Also i have found when measuring height, put tape measure at lowest part of wheel, up the center to lowest part of guard, this allows for tyre inflation and surface differences. Cheers.👍🍻🍺 cant wait to see Mucus get worked on.

You've got a hoist and you did this job at ground level? Make yourself a pipe on an old steel rim and just lower the car down onto it to compress the control arm and spring.
@backshed5295
@backshed5295 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah man that’s right . You can jack the floor jack up to put pressure on the control arm, if you use a stand like you say and lower the hoist I guess that will work too but your hoist safety locks won’t be engaged ? If ya have a ram or hose fail that could get weird quick ? Anyhow that just what I’m used too as I always did shit on the floor until recently. Thanks for watching Aaron 🍺👍

Hey Mick, do you do anything with the surfaces between the ball joints and the control arms to protect from future rust? I’m assuming that pressing them in is going to rub any painted surfaces and start the rust process off again
@backshed5295
@backshed5295 2 жыл бұрын
Mate I haven’t but that’s a good point if you have a mint undercarriage. Thinking about it all I could suggest would be black etch primer ( as it’s thin) then fit them and spray around the surface with fish oil and wipe clean the excess . Or maybe a simple rust converter before fitting? Anyone else want to add to this question for Tom?? Cheers for watching mate 🍺👍
