​@@thevintageread Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, Shauna! 🥂🍾🎄🎆 'Henkell trocken' is one of the to-go brands for bubbly here 🇩🇪, it has been produced by the German brand 'Henkell' since more than 150 years, sticking to the traditional French champagne producing method. Some years ago Henkell were bought by the Spanish Freixenet Group, whose parent group, however, is the famous German food manufacturer 'Dr Oetker'. Fun fact: the founder, Dr Oetker, invented the custard powder and quite a few other yummy bits. We all were raised on Dr Oetker vanilla pudding for dessert. Greetings from Bavaria (it's 4PM, we'll have an early dinner at ca 6PM, to give the Christ Child enough time for placing the presents under the tree. In Southern Germany, it's the 'Christkind', not Santa, who brings presents in the evening of 24th December.)

I'm American, but have a British friend from a very traditional family. They all watched the Queen's Christmas message live every year and their mother made everyone stand during it.

Funny, my mother used to tell us to stand up too, but didn't enforce it or even stand up herself. Back when I was very young when we went to "the pictures" as going to a movie was called back then, they always played God Save the Queen before the movie started and everyone has to stand up! I'm not sure exactly when that tradition stopped in Western Australia.

There's a drive -in theater near me. They don't play the national anthem, but they play God Bless America before the films.

In the UK they always used to play God Save the Queen at the end of the picture (movie) and the same at the end of a theatre performance. Not sure when it all stopped. I'm guessing maybe in the 60s/70s but I think it was just a gradual phasing out rather than planned or coordinated.

I love the Christmas message and want to see the Carols. Apart from big events like weddings, I have to thank Harry and Meghan for drawing my attention to the BRF, whom I find a charming combination of quirky kind humorous and hard working .

Mike and Zara might never chose to become working royals, but I do think, that they will be a great support behind the scene for William and Catherine and Mike will allways find a way, because he isn´t a royal, to put thinks into perspective for the public and support them in this way even more. One year (in the 1980’s) my grandad wouldn’t put his present to my grandma under the tree because she should be able to guess what it was. She got so excited and couldn’t wait til Christmas morning and then she was presented with a lovely new ironing board. Lol. Let’s just say he soon learned that was a big mistake, which he NEVER repeated,lol.

Sounds like my husband who called me at work on my birthday to say he got me a special gift. When I got home, there was a brand new, lovely vacuum cleaner. We were newly weds and it took me two weeks to get up the courage to explain what a gift is and what it isn't. I told him the only time to purchase an appliance or other practical item as a gift is when I specifically ask for it as a gift. I felt so bad for telling him because he was crestfallen. But, seriously, I knew if I didn't nip it in the bud, I would be getting toasters and coffee makers forever more. What gets me is I was his third wife. Did the others not explain this to him? I am confident his second wife would have given him an earful. We will have been married thirty-five years on December 30th. And we love each other more every year. So the third time really was the charm!

Yes.The Christmas Day tradition of my family is to watch the Queen's speech now the King's speech.

We record the King's address just in case we miss it at the right time here in 🇨🇦. I've seen articles/previews about the tree that will be behind the King as he stands to give his address. Not sure if I like the 'previews' as we never had any for our late Queen. We saw her, the favourite framed pictures & background when the address was shown on Christmas morning here. I'm looking forward to the King's Christmas address as always!

The year my son was born, I was happy to get a dishwasher. People ripped on my husband for buying it, but I staunchly defended my hubby and my new cleaning buddy. It was like having a maid in the kitchen, without having to tip. I was in Christmas heaven.🙏😇

Used to watch the Queen’s speech at 3. We all stopped and listened. And I do remember we stood up as The National Anthem too 🇬🇧🤓xx (back in the 50’s)

I just wrote a reply to another post about having to stand for God Save the Queen at the movie theatre. We also sung it every morning at school. I think that was peculiar to just the school I went to. Our school choir also was booked to open a lot of performances to sing the national anthem.

This is my 68th Christmas in California, and over the years it hasn't been all too predictable whether we'd be able to be in front of the TV or not when or if the Queen's message was broadcast, but since the internet, I have at least been able to see and hear it (replayed) yearly. How I do miss Queen Elizabeth, and her beautiful Christmas messages.❤ Edit: This was SO much fun!! Thank you, Shauna. I hope everyone's Christmas was the best!!!❤

I’m a kiwi in my 60’s and remember going to the movies as a kid and standing for God save the Queen before the cartoons started at the beginning!! We watch the Queens/Kings message as a part of the Christmas tradition!!

I’m Canadian and I remember that too. The last time I stood for The Queen in a movie theatre was in Ottawa in the early 80s! I think Ottawa, as the capital, was the last holdout because I remember being surprised they still did that there. We also sang God Save the Queen every morning in school until the early 70s I think.

Her first televised christmas message was 3 years after her coronation, so it was 4 years after she lost her father, before that it was always a radio broadcast. Apparently the royal family all sit down and watch it after their Christmas Day lunch as well. I read that their main Christmas dinner is on Christmas Eve and that is when they exchange presents. They have carried on the German traditions of their ancestors. Merry Christmas Shauna.

Your vacuum cleaner story reminded me of when my late husband was still alive - for our Wedding Anniversary, we would buy a present for the house - a new lawn mower, a set of dishes - that sort of thing. But for Christmas, he had a sneaky habit of getting me gifts that he would annex, eg a soldering iron (I did a lot of stained glass) which found its way into his tool box; or on one occasion, a set of car accessories. So I got him back and bought him a beautiful set of enamelled turqouise earrings - and that year we were exchanging gifts at the annual family get together (annual family fight usually), he was so embarrassed to get the earrings after presenting me with a hand drill - my family teased him relentlessly and insisted he wore the earrings at dinner - he was a good sport but got the hint and I got really nice girly presents after that. I am Canadian so, like you, have the monarchy as our head of state. I did not watch the Queen’s message growing up but my mother and father listened to it on the radio.I did start to watch it regularly in my middle age and always found her message to contain inspiration and gratitude. I was born the year she became Queen so she was my Queen for a long time. I now listen to King Charles. He is doing a good job, though I will never see him the same way I saw her. Your stories of royalty really tickle my ivories. You are doing a good job too. Thank you for sticking up for the Princess of Wales. I wish Commonwealth countries had better access to the royal family coverage. I hope I can find the carol concert somewhere to watch. And the Boxing Day documentary as well. My late husband and I always bought something for our home, either inside or out for Christmas. As a young couple raising our family it made sense to 'us', some friends thought we were boring to not buy individual gifts like we did when single, that was their opinion, and they were entitled to it. "We" were happy and content with common goals and dreams and that was the only important thing to us. Enjoy your break you lovely woman, I will be clicking on your older videos in your absence!

As an old lady I remember doing most of my Christmas shopping in stores. I enjoy ordering online now. It is a combination of convenience and a lack of quality items (also difficult to find sizes!). I was always careful to keep things even when my kids were little by designating each kid a side under the bed, gifts in the back and stockings in the front!

We always watch the monarch's speech. When we used to go to my gran's before she died back in the 90s, we used to raise a glass to the Queen. It was all second nature. 'The Queen'. I might reintroduce this and toast the king.

I have had Kindle unlimited for years as I read a lot! I’m now 80 and have lots of time! I can remember reading while vacuuming(hoovering to you)when I was a teen and my Mom yelling,”move around a bit!” You can find all kinds of books and if I don’t care for one, I can delete it! Hi Shauna. In Canada, the monarch's speech is usually shown on the news and after the fact but we always watched it (though we did not stand at attention). Growing up money was tight, so Dad and Mom usually gave each other kitchen small appliances or other useful items. They always made sure we have some nice gifts though. Love the jammies. Re the Harrods shopping ending. Its hard to ignore the ultimate fact, on that awful matter, that P Diana was in the Al Fayed's CARE when she died, ...tragically all round.. Imagine knowing that & how you'd feel. On top of own grief. So its interesting, especially now that we know a lot more about narcisissm & all the tricks etc ..IF applicable.. + know what actually happened, how quickly the grieving Father shifted the 'blame' by pointing his finger at the Royal Family. I dont ever recall him publicly apologising or accepting they had responsibility for her care & feel terrible etc. does anyone? That poor family (RF) really are a punching bag, for haters and the aggrieved. I dont know how they stand it, manage to ignore them & keep doing good, kind work. Always listened to the Queen’s message with our Gran and Grampa who had wrangled all us younger kids from heading downstairs to see the tree too soon (we’re on the west coast of Canada, so her message came on the radio early in the morning). In Poland we start our Xmas celebrations on Xmas Eve with the evening meal and presies. So similar to tue RF 😊 The kids always look out for the first star. That first twinkle in the sky starts the rush for the presents. Many go to church for a midnight mass . I used to love it, it's usually shorter, lots of carol singing , really uplifting.
