On our little London Allotment this week there is lots of frost damage from the incredible cold we've been having! The poor little homestead is going to be lacking spring vegetables to pick because lots of things have been killed off..... sad face.
I am also sowing peas into guttering for an early crop, fixing a broken fence and hiding from the wind in the greenhouse!

Try a trip to your local building site Jessie, they always have piles of timber to give away as it saves them on skip hire . You might hear a few wolf whistles but I'm sure you're quite capable of whistling back accompanied by a two fingered wave. I really love your little forays down to the local pub , one of the many things that sets your channel apart.

Jessie, you should get yourself a Kelly Kettle....those bad boys are super quick to light, almost as quick to boil enough water for a drink and run on scraps of twigs/sticks (I keep a collection of stick from throughout the year in a plastic bag in my shed). No issues with cold temperatures preventing you from having a hot drink!

Very interesting video Tracy and a great insight. I think you're absolutely right about food and health. You need to look after your physical and mental health, we all do, and i believe this is strongly affected by what we eat (just as i was typing this you mentioned supermarket food and the impact on health). Agree Chinley with the scratch cooking and for what is worth of you've preserved what you've grown out still counts as seasonal eating 😀

Free timber.....here in Australia, PVC pipes are transported to plumbing supply stores in timber frames that they dump so our local outlet is more than happy for me to take as much as I want. The timber is roughly 70mm x 40 mm and just over 1M long and untreated. I stack the lengths and join them using cheap metal strips and screws to make the sides of my raised beds. Hope this helps someone!!

Speaking of changing the way we garden to allow for the weather, I have been buying seeds for different conditions. On the North Coast of California, we have been through cold temperatures through May, and drought and heat in the summer and fall. Usually we are mild in the winter because we are on the coast, with early spring, and fog in the summer. This winter we just had nearly a month of high winds and heavy rain. Just new challenges to keep it interesting. Wishing you an early spring.😊

I feel for you. Last year was brutal and we've lost a lot of 'winter' stuff during the second cold snap (they survived fine through the snow. Weird, huh?) Here in our corner of East Sussex we have solid clay soil (like - build your house foundations out of it, s.o.l.i.d.) and don't have a lawn for the winter because it just gets waterlogged and turns to mud. So I'm contemplating doing my dhalias in pots this year instead. I'll still have to dig them up, but at least I won't have to tackle the clay soil to do it.

The prices of timber is astronomic now, Limited timber production occurred during 2020, as a result of Covid-19 and even with production already at a 13 year high, there still isn't enough supply to go around to meet demand. In the UK currently, we're cutting down more trees than we're planting. We're replanting 50% less trees than we did 10 years ago, which is reducing the amount of timber on the market.

I’ve set up my propagation lights and started my slower growing annuals. It has been too wet to do anything. I’ve got loads of pruning jobs to do. I think in the spring I may have a lot of casualties from it being so wet. I started my onions at Christmas (I read it somewhere so I’m trying it, my onion last year didn’t really do much), Aubergines have been removed from my veg to grow, I was sick of picking a good sized fruit only to find a hole in the bottom from a slug, or being scratched by the plant so going grow more sweet peppers instead.

Tulips are very unreliable that’s why so many people treat at annuals and just replant every year. Lucky if you get 2-3 years of them. I tried an experiment with dahlias and left In the ground and mulched for protection and they all rotted we are in virginia zone 7b and we just get way to much rain so I’ll need to pull up next year and save the tubers. I love dahlias but mine did better in 2021 than last year. Maybe we will have more success this year.

I lost 2 of my 3 tree cabbages, and I was astounded at their growth, They are about 5ft 8, but they are behind the greenhouse in a real snug square and sheltered on all sides, so I think it was just too cold. Minus 9.5. The Kalletes with them are fine but sparrow-pecked. Do you think the Kalletes will produce edible sprouts in the spring? I was tempted to take them out for the girlies, but if they sprout I'll leave them in. I so hate this month, but it'll soon be a distant memory I hope 😁

I NEED to be outdoors doing some work. We've also got dahlias to dig up and move as last year they grew flippin' huge and blocked half the garden off lol; can you believe that my grass has never stopped growing (nor have the weeds!!!)? It's so long that the mower won't cut it, strimmer job🤨but it's still too wet🥴 annnnd I've just had the dreaded C*vid AGAIN which has set me back a further week now😡 I think we have a few non-rain days ahead with frosts overnight, but the garden is still like a quagmire!! Oh, the delights of being a gardener hey??😆

I've sown my first seeds for 2023 at long last! Onions, peppers, chillies and...... tomatoes! Am I mad? 🤪Great vlog Jessie! Hope your dahlias make it! My peas always get eaten by mice! Any tips to deter the little buggers? We have loads of cats at the allotment too! Lots of snow here in North Wales today so no visit to the allotment 🌨️🌨️ Cheers Jessie 🥂

Exciting time Carol!! Oooooh, off with the toms already :D I should have said that on the vlog really! Yeah, i find if i sow peas early in the saeson they always get eaten because theres not much around so it helps starting them inside in the guttering for that too! later on when there is more around for the mice to eat they tend to leave them alone for me!

So, I’ve been trying to find a answer to this question for a while now and I haven’t found a straight/clear answer; I have a golden raspberry in my garden, do I prune it like my normal red raspberries or do I leave them like an autumn fruiting one?
@carollloydjones5735
@carollloydjones5735 2 жыл бұрын
I too have a golden raspberry, had it for a few years now and I've always cut it to the ground, like autumn raspberries, and it's come back lovely and healthy every year. The raspberries last year were huge and very tasty 😋

Thank you for this fun video! 😊 I sowed peas with you today. Is it possible to start a small fire in your grill or on the plot to give you a bit of warmth while working? Our fire pit came in handy while building the greenhouse this winter. Are you still using your chalk board in the shed to keep track of what to do? I’ve used post it notes on my day planner as a reminder. Did you hang the bug box?

thanks Samantha! Ah, i wish! Fires have been banned on all allotment sites round here :/. We can get away with a BBQ, though, so we might have to bring up some sausages as props! :D The blackboard needs to come back into action! I really need to have a good shed tidy so i can get to it! :D Haven't hung the bug box yet, still on the todo!

Hi Jessie, do you put holes in the guttering for drainage when sowing your peas? Great video as always. Think my plot will be full of potatoes this year, got a bit carried away with ordering different varieties 😊 can’t wait for spring. Planted tulips and daffodils.

Nah, only because i use the gutter for something else later in the year and it'd be useless with holes in hahaha! And yay, 2023 - Anne's year of the potato! :D

I love watching your channel. Which camera do you use to record your footage? I would like to record a few videos but not 100% sure if any of my cameras would be any good or not. Also as regards to flowers (in particular cut flowers) what do you think to Eryngiums? I like to collect them and ornamental grasses, carex prairie fire is my favourite so far as the leaves turn red in sunlight.
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks Rob. I don't even use a camera, i just use my phone! I find it so much easier. As for Eryngiums - i love them, but never had a great deal of luck with them! looking to get a couple into my gravelly front garden this year though. Unfortunately the chaps who have been digging out our collapsed kitchen floor stored all the rubble and sand right on top of all my Agapanthus and Carex so i'm going have to do a bit of work on it!! So as a sea Holly expert, do you have any recommendations?

@@JessieatPlot37 if you want a smaller variety "blue hobbit" is nice. A pale coloured one that is nice is "miss wilmotts ghost". I like "pen blue" it has really nice tones to it. I wouldn't mind getting some Eryngium bourgatii Picos blue which looks to have a beautiful deep blue.
