Great video, and easy to understand. Working on a 73, and new windshield is on the list.

I don’t know why people call it the CA style. It is the chrome trim that comes with the deluxe model buses. Thank you for the vid!

Wow! You did that by yourself! I would have broken 10 of them trying that. The window that was most difficult for me was the side back window by the the sliding door .

Oh man I know!! I expected to break it...and was thinking maybe 20% to keep it in one piece....lucky day! ty!

I've done about 12 Bus windshields and broken 4. I learned to loop the string twice around the window channel in case the first pass doesn't pull the rubber completely over the metal. Thanks for your Video. Britt Grannis aka Roadcow

Are you wetting down the seal so it slides and sits easier? Also how come people's glass break? It doesn't seem like you're putting that much pressure on it. Cheers!
@bishopofrustyiron31017 ай бұрын
Used a bottle with 2 pints water, 1 TBS of dish soap shaken....to spray down the seal...and I did this on a hot day, that helps keep the chance of shattering the glass down. Yes not much pressure at all, and always spreading out the pressure as wide as you can with your hand.

Wish i had this video before i cracked my windshield trying to put it in back in 2016 , still haven't got the new glass yet , everyone wants 500+ for the glass not including installation fees as i will not be installing the next myself.
@bishopofrustyiron3101 Жыл бұрын
Oh man, ya i was sweating the entire time about cracking it...dang 500+ for replacement...yikes! Best of luck man, hope you can get a break (not a pun) on getting some new glass and installed with some magic!

I just picked mine up from an auto glass shop for $200. Chinese made of course

Why does it crack? Seems like quite a bit of force is needed to crack it.

Can you install the dash screws with the windshield in? I didn't think that was possible.

super short tools, may have to search for them...but it is possible :)

Love watching your tutorial. I replaced my windshield which required a new seal. I ran into a little issue with the seal looking like the seal was too long and it didn’t fit perfect. Would it be best to cut the seal to allow it to seat properly. I see no other choice. First time doing this.
@bishopofrustyiron31012 жыл бұрын
as long as you use a top brand RTV on the place where you cut it, should be fine. I'm about making do with what I can....so ya i'd cut and seal it. If there was a chance to return it and ask them, hey give me the right sized one, then that would be good. So cool to hear another VW rig is going back on the road!

I'm looking at a 1971 VW Bus Transporter Delux with a cracked windshield and a little damage to the body, but everything else looks great. The lady is asking $18,000 for it. Some guy walking by told me he sent pictures of the bus to a friend of his who works on VW Buses, and said that she's asking 6,000 dollar too much for the condition it's in. Can you give any opinions on the asking price? I'm hoping I can talk her down to $12,000, is that reasonable?

Hails David! Hmm, 18k that is steep but not crazy, if the bus is in mint aside from the glass and some small body damage, a good price would be 12-18k. At 12k i would expect no leaks, good floorboard under the drivers feet, good ball joints and tie rods, at 12k for a transporter that would be a solid price. I would also expect it to run good and have a firm stick shift, nothing wobbly. Anything can be painted so my 2 cents is who cares about the color. Now for 18k i would expect an immaculate interior, headliner perfect, seats with no wear. No rust under the drivers feet or passenger feet. I would expect it to have its rear row of seats and middle row of seats. Come prepared with similar quotes of similar busses if you can, the seller is going to be defensive right away, make that assumption, so I would present the visit to barter this way: Drive up in a vehicle that shows you care for it, make it an old rig but not a trailer queen. Bring a friend so you show that you expect to buy it and drive it away. Keep your 12k in mind, start at 11 or even 10 if its rough, be prepared to pay 13. There is always someone out there who will not get pics to a friend to look, its great you did, so you are researching. Be friendly as you inspect the vehicle, talk about how you will care for it, bring it back to the road so others can enjoy it. Sincerity.
