IN THIS EPISODE WE GO A BIT DEEPER INTO GETTING OUR ABANDONED VB HOLDEN COMMODORE CLASSIC BACK ON THE ROAD . LAST EPISODE WAS A BIT OF A WILL IT RUN TYPE OF THING WITH THE FACTORY V8 253ci COMING BACK TO LIFE SLOWLY BUT THIS TIME WE NEED BRAKES AND A REAL DRIVE.
IF YOU LOVE OLD CARS DON'T FORGET TO CHECK OUT OUR PREVIOUS EPISODES LIKE EP18
In this episode i come across an abandoned wrecking yard / junk yard and rescue a HQ wagon and a classic old Ek Holden but thats definitely not all we find. call it a shed / barn find or what ever you like but there is classic survivor cars everywhere, from a XB Ford falcon coupe , Monaro , Torana , a Mopar Charger ,a couple of chevy 56 / 57 , valiants , Commodore HSV clubsport even a few old jdm datsun and mitsubshi cars and much more ever a few old toyota 4x4 . So do take a look it doesn't matter if your into perfect body and paint work , patina , rust or whatever theres a bit of everything in this one for everyone. We will have a few of the cars we bought in future episodes shortly and hopefully you'll see them running and driving back on the highway after years of being parked and left to rot. cheers for watching Backshed .

I’ve had a couple of old holders that had the 253. They were always far superior the 6 cylinder engine of the day. They just seemed so much nicer than a 6. With those front cals , I would wind back the pistons a little. Then lube the sliders. Give it a try I’ll bet you love it.

A set of factory alloys from the VB SL/E model? They're a bit skinny but you can't really go wrong with factory. Or period correct mags like a set of jellybeans or hotwires? That could work. A set of Imschers from the HDT car would look great too but I don't fancy your chances of finding a good set of those.

Hey Michael , You know some of the jobs that fight us the most turn out to be the best out comes ! You did a really fine job on this Holden and it really shows the quality of workmanship you provide on all of your cars ! Thank you for another fine show ! There are so many shows on Y/T that do not show the correct way to repair and they take shortcuts that are sometimes even dangerous ! It is so good to see someone that takes pride in what they do and the content they show ! Thank you again from the U.S.A. for the pride in workmanship that you show your viewers !

Another great job mate, learnt a grate trick years ago for painting vinyl people go out and buy vinyl paint, Piss thin acrilic even the seats thin coats, another trick locktite 401 bring the cracks together in the seats or any vinyl or fabric get someone to put a line of 401 on there and it will literally melt and glue the cracks together, also the door trims you can un pick the edges heat it with heat gun then pull it tight an glue edges back again, tops of the door trims I've used sika flex got a bog applicator squeezed it into the cracks get some prepsol or terps same stuff sort of wipe over it to smooth it out then use kitchen sponge o get the texture then paint, Dash cracks to heat them with heat gun put something heavy on them over night so they ain't risen up then fill with sika use prepsol and sponge and paint, This is pretty long winded and not really ment for you but but there will be alot of blokes or chicks watching that are on a real budget! There are a heap of tricks to make things look pretty without having to buyevery thing, cheers ps been in the painting and resto business for over 30 years

Brings back some memories. In 1979 our neighbour across the road took delivery of a new VB SL with the 253 and 4 speed manual in bright red paint. Took me for a ride in it (I was 11), been a V8 Commodore devotee ever since (I own a 95 VS Executive 5.0 manual and a VFII SSV Redline manual). I think over-wheeling these cars looks ridiculous. I prefer BT1/FE2 spec suspension and ride high and 14/15 inch period wheels - SLE or SS spec (or HDT if you luck in with a set). Never been a fan of the Cragar (if that's what they are) style wheels you have on them. Also look good with Speedie 5 spoke chrome wheels or Simmons.

I used to have one of these old girls back in the day in NZ, same colour too. It was fitted with the 1.9l 4 cyl engine - the motor was the biggest POS ever offered in a vehicle, the ONLY saving grace was when the fibre timing gears stripped one day, I happen to have an old 202 sitting in the garage and swapped the timing gears over and away she went again!! Lol Motor was still a POS though... the good old days!!

My VB 4.2 SL was the same blue, with silver below the bumper strips, as it also had a set of Dragway two piece five spoke with chrome rims, as they looked the part. Being an SL it had adjustable intermittent wiper control, tachometer, aircon, power steering, bumper strips on the bumpers (standard on the L). I added Wylie gas heavy duty shocks as a great improvement. Also 100w high-beam globes. The head lights glass is removable/replaceable from VB to VL. I had to replace the light control stalk as the high-beam to low-beam switch failed and I replaced it with a HZ one, while keeping the matching interior matching twist part on the stalk that can be separated.

Had so much fun watching you having at least some fun with this car! 😉 You got lucky with the window mechanism, I was once working with my mate on his '77 Opel Kadett C, you would know that as a Holden Gemini TX, they had a winch system with a 4-track spool unit behind the crank and pulleys in all 4 corners of the door. The lower ones were anchored between the inner and outer part of the door panels, they used to rust out, losing the tension on the cable and the window would come crashing down...oh well, good old days... Thx for your work, in front and behind the camera! 👍👍👍

I've been waitin for this follow up on the VB Mick. I love ya style, no BS and you explain everything your doing along the way and why you should do it. Those door rubbers were always crap, even after a few years in the Australian sun they were stuffed. I know mate, I worked for O'Brians glass for quite a few years and nearly always had to replace one rubber or even more when doing the door glass. I think this ones going to come out good, great classic Aussi cars. Cheers mate for sharing 🇦🇺👍🏼🍻
