In this video we take @_joemac1's race ready EP3 out for a couple of laps at Cadwell Park. I've always liked EP3s but haven't driven one for ages so it was great to get back behind the wheel.

When I first k swapped my first DC2 years ago it was all finished apart from I didn’t have an exhaust....didn’t stop me taking it out for the night with just a manifold though....my mates could hear it 6 miles away 😂

Started watching Dan because of his E46 M3 content. I’ve sold my E46 M3 which was a weekend car and a track car. Now have a dedicated track EP3 and a Porsche for weekends. EP3 on first try out on track was a piece of sh1t. I thought it was a huge mistake, but I sent it up to Rob at Area Motorsport for a half cage, buckets & harness, rota force wheels & NS2R tyres, Tegiwa intake, yellow speed brakes, yellow speed coilovers to Rob’s spec, along with a bunch of suspension refreshment and drive shafts etc. Full geo and camber etc to Robs spec. He is a magician!!! It’s also been mapped with inlet and exhaust manifolds etc. It’s really a great car, no understeer amd it rotates beautifully into slight oversteer which you dial out through the throttle. It really handles very well and can’t fault it OTHER than the steering… Dan you are spot on, steering is the biggest let down of the car. Hoping someone comes up with a fix at some point, I’ve poured a lot of ££ into this car…

I heard it's to do with the rack placement itself and how it interacts with tie rods etc., people change the rack to DC5 or use those solid rack sliders and say it makes a difference, but there's others who say it barely improved for them. Personally I think it's just a bad design that you have to get used to...

Hey Danny.👋 Not a very long video, but you caught me on my lunchbreak this time, so it worked out perfectly. Joe's EP3 looks cool, nice race spec, and sounds damn good even through my cheap headphones. Good car for sure.👍 Too bad your time with it was cut short. I could drive that one all day and never be ballsy enough to go flat out in 5th where you got told off. Loving the track/road car driving content at the minute mate! Ep3 racks can get a bit loose over years. Just wear and tear I think. I reckon a new rack would sort the steering feel/sharpness out dramatically! Thanks for another great video Dan!

I Sorted steering float by upgrading rack slider and riser ,steering far more direct and had great feel

I had an EP3 with the same spec. I totally agree with that you’ve said especially the steering, it does the job but you just wish it had more feel.

Had caster plates and caster increase bushings on my EV1. Helped the feel for sure, but a fair bit of effort and expense to rectify a problem that imo should never have existed!

Great video mate! My ep3 is pretty much the same spec bar stop tech brakes wavetrac diff and 5.8fd and I do agree with you about the steering, its so shit. every time I'm used to it a I drive a mates car and realise just how bad mine is.

Yeah the ep3 electric steering is abit over powered but glancing over that they really are great motors you can put the dc5 rack in that's ment to speed up the turn in and also the ps in those is abit nicer.

Loving this new series so far and this is another great video. How do the EP's handle compared to an EG on track other than the lack of feeling from the steering? Would be interested to see you drive a Megane R26 as people seem to rave about the renault cars and they are reasonably cheap compared to old Hondas these days. All the best

Yeah Meganes are on the list. I have the feeling I'll break a few hearts with that one and prefer the mk3, although I haven't driven either before. As I said in the video it was alright, just a bit heavier, suspension isn't as good, nor is the steering. Still a good package though the EP3

IK old video, but Inside the ep3 steering rack there is a rubber bushing that ends up flexing under a lot of load. Recently replaced that bushing with a solid metal "bushing" and definitely made the steering have sharper turn in and better communication to the tires. Still the steering ratio is very long :( definitely

there is a simple solution for steering feel , just replace the rack with a hydraulic one from 7th gen coupe or RSX.

Could also be the rack slider being worn out. Common problem in Dc5s. Replaced with a solid slider helps

@@danielcudicio4100 those are nice , but most of the aftermarket sliders I've seen on cars were metal. BUt still nothing beats hydraulic steering rack. There is a reason why honda used hydraulic racks on DC5R.

I was ordering what you recommend for a good fast road setup and ocasional track day regarding: 1. ARB front/rear 2. Spring rates front/rear I have currently KW V2 and I need to put new springs so I bought rear hard race camber kit and front camber bolts

225 is too small at front for an ep3. I did my first track with 255 at front, and 6 degrees of caster, and the car is so fun now

I have an EK4 rally car and had an EP3 road car, prefer the chassis of the EK although I know its comparing a rally car to road car. Loved the position of the gearstick in the EP3 though and the gearbox was smooth as butter, unlike the rally car that's eaten two gearboxes in two rallies! p.s. If your ever up in NW England and fancy a go give me a shout

Flat through Coppice sounds sick as tits, might give it a bash next time I’m there but have a slight fear of entering through the gates of hell backwards in a massive ball of flames if it doesn’t quite work out. Mint video as always 👌🏼👍🏼

I hated the steering on mine. Even after total rebuild of the rack due to not centering properly, it was still crap. Too slow to react to driver inputs imo. It really lets these cars down. There must be a mod to sort this out by now surely?

Nah, its just inherently bad design, the way its mounted to the bulkhead with big long track rods. Heard a DC5 rack isnt worth the effort, but what does make a slight difference is fitting a delrin slider in the rack. Ive got a GT86 now, just couldn’t believe how I put up with the EP3 steering for so long..

Never liked the EP to look at, but Honda really got the chassis right. Only took you a lap to get acquainted, almost K. Tsuchiya levels of confidence, such a pity about the red flag. Next Cadwell video to be the "Flat in 5th" test? 😅

Would love to know your thoughts on a Clio 1*2 compared to an EP3. I think they're both great cars, but you're a good driver and your opinion would be well respected

Id either say its the electric ps or the slider in the rack that causes that feeling.... but either way nice car driven well 👍

Ah well then that changes that must just be electric ps.. i would much prefer if it had a hydrolic set up i believe the dc5 does and you can swap them over but i think its some effort to do it .. anyway though man nice driving shame it was stopped just as you were getting going

I'm not a fan of the steering feel on the EP3. Rest of the car is pretty good on track from my experience.

The steering rack is positioned very high up on these EP3s, I think that comes into it as well

There’s a good video on the moto iq channel going over all the shortcomings of the ep3 suspension and how to fix them. It’s the high position of the rack and the long tie rods that kill the steering on these basically.

Fn2 would deffo make a better track car. Better chassis and more steering feel

You would have to change full system, not sure the pulley would fit under the bonnet?

@@dannyDC2 DC5 racks have been swapped into EP3s, Not entirely sure on the process but it can be done.

All the fast cup lads run setups the get the rear moving, they can be understeery when you lean on them, hence why people have big rear roll bars at setups to compensate. Another reason why big gay wings on the back of them make no sense.
