Wow! I thought the crying before the downhill was kind of a joke to add some drama/ humor to the video. Kudos to you for finishing the ride and facing those fears head on! I’m buying the “Crushing and Crying” memoir no doubt! Lol

This one cracks me up. So many points where Ryan realizes this was a bad idea. Kudos to Amelia for dealing with it like a champ. You see the full range of the competitive athlete mentality.
@HackHunter18352 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. 75 to 100 miles (RAGBRAI) on smooth pavement is one thing and hard enough. 100 miles in dirt going up and down mountains would be death for me. It is one heck of an accomplishment for Amelia being new to that kind of cycling. Her never quit mentality was an inspiration.
@Chris-pw7ov2 жыл бұрын
@@HackHunter1835 i tried a 100 mile mtb race once, and it did not go well. I just rode a little under 2 hours on a backcountry trail last week and I was cooked.

@@Chris-pw7ov I hear ya. I hate riding in dirt. (sand) Laid the bike down a few times on backwoods trails. I had enough of that. I dont mind climbing paved hills, but watching Ryan and Amelia do that ALL day gave chest pains.

I have done the White Rim 3 times now, but as 3 day 2 night or 4 day 3 night just for fun and beers at night. That said, every trip, I have seen folks riding it as a day trip. It's doable for sure, fitness and prep being key.

This brings back memories of my first lap on White Rim 20 years ago on a cheap Gary Fisher mountain bike. I did it in a day, solo and carried 5 liters of water and still ran out with 25 miles to go. Fortunately, some campers showed mercy and tanked me up. Last year, I went again, but camped 3 nights and took it slow to enjoy it. Great vid!

I rode this route over 4 days and 3 nights with a group. We had a permit for camping. The permits make sense, because it gives each group a lot of privacy and quiet. While the riding is fun, the camping was even better. It is so quiet at night and the stars were unbelievable. I think they missed the point. You can go ride 100 miles on dirt roads anytime. The White Rim is a very special experience at night.

Amelia a fear of heights is something you can get past simply by doing what you did, and not letting it hold you back. I'm 62 and was an aircraft mechanic with Delta Airlines for 32 years, which required being able to work up high, but when I was a kid even 12 years old, had a really difficult time jumping down even six feet. You're a trooper and a beautiful lady. I'd never heard of you before watching Ryan's video, and so looked you up....... My God what a life of accomplishments you're living..... I'm blown away ! Thank you, thank you, thank you Amelia for sharing your vulnerability. It encourages me more than you know. Because of Ryan's videos, my husband and I started riding together a couple of years ago, finding that touring is what we like to share (I have found that I am not a huge fan of MTB). My heart felt your tears for I have been there, finding my breaking points. I am not as fit or as young as you and Ryan are. So to see a healthy, active strong young woman that you are, hitting your wall, I am encouraged. I will not be riding the White Rim any time soon (if ever). But Ragbrai, STP and a coast to coast are on our lists. I have yet to do a century ride, 65 is my longest day. That is my next goal. Thanks Ryan for your videos!

Wow awesome video. I am sure many of us at one time or another, have pushed through a physical ordeal once or many times. You are correct that you do bond with the person that you do it with. Helping and encouraging one another is the best way to get through. Pushing the weaker ( like the saddle or carry extra weight) person in times of weakness is the way to go. You should both finish totally spent the same amount! Four liters of water was far less than you should have had, you were fortunate to be given some! As my wifey says a little danger is ok as long as it all works out. Keep riding.

Man, you really are living the life. Just hop on over to ride the White Rim in a day. How cool is that? Thank you for yet another great video! "They had a rainy summer or something..." Yeah, Ryan, Moab had epic flooding this fall. Main St. (or nearby, wasn't there) was a river! Mill Cr. did some serious damage. 15:20: "Don't go in the rut! Don't go in the rut! DARN IT!!!" (goes into the rut) - target fixation!!! Surprised Amelia didn't opt for the chamois creme at the start to stave off saddle discomfort as long as possible. Would have been a good idea. Hitting Murphy's Hogback at mile 67 does make for a bit of a challenge!!! But wow, Amelia is quite the sport! 14.5 hours. Amazing. Nice job to you both, but especially Amelia 👍!

Thanks! I did have a LOT of chamois cream going on - butt just wasn’t ready for that roughness 😂

Oh wow, I didn't know about the epic flooding...that makes sense with the terrain now

Oh good on the chamois cream. And it's true, nothing replaces saddle time. Gotta tone the correct muscles for support. But you made it!!! Man, I'm amazed that four months in on a bike and you do the White Rim in a day. Sheesh, let's just shame us all! Been mountain biking since '84 and I still haven't attempted THAT! Did ride it multi-day in the mid 90's with Rim Tours and had a blast. Oh and I'm with you Ryan - Moab is my favorite place in the world! First went in '92, then watched "Thelma & Louise" and that was it! Fave movie, fave place. Been 15 or 16 times and still can't get enough (but last trip was '16, so it's time). Gotta get back there!!!
