We had lightning hit a tall pine tree in the backyard. Nearby by dad had an extension cord he was using for his pole trimmer. It was still plugged into the back of the garage. The lightning followed that cord, into the garage and fried: garage door opener, our cable modem, it followed the coax line up into the living room where we luckily had it plugged into a battery backup/surge protector which it fried causing it to smoke & set off the smoke alarm. About a week before that, I put our 2 large chest freezers on wall outlet surge protectors and of course my whole home office computer systems are on UPS/Surge protectors. Now, all electronics are plugged in with at least a surge protector, including our garage door opener. When they installed our new furnace & A/C, they included a surge protector!

If you can afford, i would spray in foam for insulation. The mama cow might of died from a tear inside or artery ruptures just to name a few. I have had that happen on the farm when i was a young guy. We milked about 150 Jerseys then and i had a bit of experience in that life. lol Sad to hear but nice that the other mom took on the calve. Thanks for sharing.

I have found chamfering the inside of all pvc fittings with a utility blade & sand paper well worth it, if time consuming. So much more fool proof and so much less of a chance of getting a snake stuck down the road. Can save some major digging and hassles. ✌️✊

We've had our share of cows do pass during the last few years, we don't have a large herd, so any loss is a large one to us. Some we did know why, one had a tree fall on it, another had hoof issues and a few from other issues. Have a good day!

Happy Birthday, Kevin! I was 16 the year you were born in 1974. It was a good year. The new shop is looking great! Rhonda, I watch another dairy channel that is also in Michigan and sometimes when one of their cows gives birth she doesn't even have enough strength to get on her feet. They give her a bolus (is that the right word) of calcium (if I remember right) and she recovers quickly and is on her feet cleaning her baby in no time. Do I have that right and have you ever heard of it or had to do it with your cows?

Once in a while, we will have a new mama down after giving birth. It's called milk fever. We IV the cow some calcium, and she recovers very quickly.
