About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.
Music from Epidemic Sound.

I've been waiting to see this one! This is really exciting. It shows that it is really doable in small steps. I've started having some health issues and I have started switching to containers along with my in ground gardens. I know it's a mishmash but I'm in the country and no one cares what my garden looks like lol Doing just a little at a time is better than getting discouraged and doing nothing. Those pears are wonderful looking! The squirrels and raccoons got all ours the past few years.

Oh no. Don't say that! We actually feed our squirrels. Hope they leave our pears alone next year if we get any.

Squirrels took all of our pears last year and this year they've had all the crab apples (there may have been some swearing!)

Hi Liz, I think over the years I must have watched this series 4-5 times, the harvest was great, seeing the ducks was great, seeing the beautiful Monty was great, but for me the best part of this series was seeing your character come out, the giggling at the duck having a poo, the struggle past the bean wigwam, all of that made the series for me, I always watch the live videos after the event somehow but I have to say I love this series, thank you for reposting it, it’s a timeless classic and an inspiration every single time, I wish every year that I had weight all my allotment produce, and every year I’m so excited to bring it home and start processing it that I just forget until it’s too late, but next year I am taking my scales to the allotment and I will do just that, thanks again, it’s inspiring x

Thank you so much, what lovely feedback! Next year should be lovely on our site. Finally all the beds are settled in with a nice mulch, so hopefully abundant harvests are ahead of us.

It’s always so lovely to watch your video’s. I started my garden this year and added chickens a few months ago and I hope one day I can provide as much for my family as you do. Do you boil your vegetables first before they go in the freezer? There is so much to learn about storing for long time. Greetings from holland!

Depends which veg I'm freezing. In my book, The Seasoned Gardener, I share what I do with the veg before storing them (not recipes, but an indication of whether I blanche, fully cook or freeze raw). www.bytherfarm.com/books

I’ve really enjoyed watching your challenge and all the videos. We live in semi rural South East Queensland in Australia and I can grow most of the same things but apples and other stone fruit etc are the low chill variety. I just swap the months around as we are opposite to Wales. We don’t have a down season exactly but the sub tropical summer Nov-March is almost like your winter in that it is not a wonderful time to garden. I do get out at 4:30 am at first light and get some things done and it’s worth it. Some things you grow need our winter which is probably more like your summer. Your videos are really inspiring and fun for all climates to watch.

I have so loved this mini series Liz. It was just so inspiring as I prepare to plant the spring/summer veg garden. We’re getting close to the traditional time for planting out our tomatoes. Usually Labour Weekend in NZ which is about the third weekend in October. But as with everything…….weather dependent. Hope everything is well with you and Mr J.

So glad that you've enjoyed it. All is well with us, I've been frantically busy having fun with friends - including a visit from Morag Gamble. One more weekend of socialising before I get back to the grindstone of making weekly videos.

Great to hear you’ve been having fun times. Moral Gamble is awesome. I really like her style. Weekly videos must be exhausting but we truly do appreciate them. It’s incredible to see how far you’ve come at the new homestead in what feels like just such a short time. Cheers!

Congratulations! Do you have a way of powering the freezers if the power goes off?
@LizZorab
@LizZorab 9 ай бұрын
I don't, but the freezers are good for 48 hours or so as long as I don't keep opening the door. It would be a very unusual situation in which our power was off for that long 😃

Hi you're great at explaining everything makes the videos easy to watch just asking how to store cooking apples for tarts in a freezer without them going discoloured ?
@LizZorab
@LizZorab 9 ай бұрын
As I cut them up, I put them into a bowl with water and a little lemon juice. I strain the water/lemon juice off before putting into bags for freezing.

Hi Liz , what type of pear tree is that ? How old is it to produce that yield and do you need 2 plants to x pollinate or is it ok on it's own . Reason i'm asking is i'm going to order a pear and apple tree for my allotment and just curious after seeing this. Thx
@LizZorab
@LizZorab 8 ай бұрын
Lots of places sell 'family trees' or dual variety trees which have more than one variety grafted onto the main stem. Usually they are chosen to be ideal for cross-pollination.
