About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

Glad to be reminded of this technique. I usually try to take rose cuttings at a branching node, so this is heartening to see it so successful just below a leaf node. Thanks, Liz!

Thank you! I love the simplicity of this video. I have tried in the past with no success, trying all the "fussy" ways. I did watch one of your videos where you explained taking rose cuttings, it was in August, last year? I apologize that I cannot remember when it was filmed, but I do remember what it was about ; ). I tried your method a couple weeks ago with 3 different types of roses. So far so good. I love that you showed ones that did take, and explained that they may not always. I do agree that it is worth the try.

Liz, thanks for this! I’m going to try taking cuttings of a rose that belonged to my late Mother. We call it the “Mother’s Day Rose”. It always started blooming by Mother’s Day. It’s a very old deep red rose with double blooms.

I'm pleased that you liked it. I've taken lots more roses cuttings today, so hopefully the garden will be filled with roses in a couple of years.

Hi. I've just watched your tube and thank you. A friend was cutting his rose back last year so I came home with a 3' branch which I cut into small lengths. As I wasn't in very good shape physically I just poked them into the ground. They have all survived the rigours of the winter and summer and two have even flowered. I just hope they make it through to next year. Have you any comments? Beginner's luck? Thanks for your earthiness.

You did exactly what commercial growers do - they just put pieces into the ground and wait. It's the same thing as I'm doing in a pot, but you've done it the even easier way! Congrats on having some viable roses. 🌹

Definitely going to try again Liz. My cuttings all took using your method but unfortunately they didnt survive the really cold winter we had up here in southern Scotland. Temps of minus 15 a few nights. Praying for a milder one this year!!

I am good thank you Liz. It has been a very hot summer here and no rain to speak of. I am missing Spyros terribly but keeping busy and have visited Malta Wales and Crete this year. When are you doing your next live . I seem to miss them. I hope you and Mr J are well. Things are looking really good at Byther farm but I think Wales hasn't had the best of weather this summer.

be careful puting rose cuttings in pots, liz. either sink it full depth in the ground, or overinter in the polytunnel. they WILL root but will be affected by frost. i bought a lovely bunch of roses last year. no, the wife didn't get them. they were for cuttings. every one rooted in the pot i planted them. unfortanately, the winter frosts killed them all...........................brian

Sorry to read that your cuttings didn't survive after you had planted them out. As you can see from my examples, I find this method works well.
