What a legendary day on a legendary boat! You did your homework on SoCal ocean fishing before coming out from Georgia and it shows. Great job! The low inertia of spinning outfits allows that sardine to swim more freely than conventional reels but of course it's a tougher fight since you cannot rest the spinning outfit on the rail. Will be keeping an eye on your channel. Be safe 🇺🇲

nice to see you using the spinning reels on the bluefish, I hate those conventionals, they are so cumbersome and clunky

Back in 1980's San Diego we caught albacore in large quantities. I have been out of deep sea fishing for a long time. Did they get fished out?

@@timothymcintosh2932 Hi I don’t believe they’ve been fished out but it’s more related to weather patterns / water temps / etc. I’m not local but I’ve heard many locals say the same and one day they’ll be back….guess we’ll see

@@theoriginalcaptjack I bought a 28 foot Boston whaler in 82 brand new. I was 22. That year was in the middle of El Niño and the fishing was off the hook. Albacore fishing was wide open and every thing else.

It truly is terrible how the west coast has not adapted the spinning reel more into there setups. I think it’s more of a “trend” to not have spinning gear than anything. There’s no reason why the majority of game fish along SoCal 10-60 pound couldn’t be had on spinning gear along with a higher hookup ratio and easier to operate. Excuse the rant Thanks for sharing this,,,,, I love seeing $200 setups out fish dozens of $500 plus outfits, what can I say? Not to mention the importance of fluorocarbon size and hook size on school Tuna. You know something else? I was onboard a 1.5 day last week with a dude from Mobile Alabama, he was using similar gear and like you he was bit a lot. 👍🏻

It’s more of a cultural thing I feel like, same way our conventional setups could serve well on the east coast in many applications. It’s all personal preference and each has their strengths and weaknesses
@nebmalie2138
@nebmalie2138 Жыл бұрын
Also I’m curious as to what you mean by higher hookup ratio?
@rossginn1171
@rossginn1171 Жыл бұрын
@@nebmalie2138 I didn’t emphasize on that,,,, this last weekend I hopped on whatever i could and it was a day trip to the fishing grounds 20 miles west. Literally standing on both sides of me were two guys that couldn’t operate a conventional reel,experiencing fouled reels and basically inexperienced. I think a spinning reel setup is going to get more baits out away from the boat in cases like this and of course a lighter fluorocarbon leader like the gentleman in his video is using. It seems that baits furthest from the boat and or on 20-25# fluorocarbon are getting bit when the bite is TUFF.

Ross, I agree on the spinning gear but for the fleet boat style of fishing here on the West Coast, there are a couple drawbacks to fishing the ‘Coffee Grinder’. The biggest disadvantage is that with the underslung line, you cant rest the rod on the rail for leverage. Like you said, conventional gear’s not needed for these schoolie-sized YFT, but sometimes these schools have a few bigger model fish mixed in. When that happens, the fun factor tends to go away fast (I been there). That said, with these size fish (perfect fun-sized), the spinner is AWESOME. Great Work Jack! Tight lines!
