This is one of the top distortions ever made. I toured with one for 10 years. Never had to touch it. If you don't tap data center on it,it should last. All their pedals had a defect from the factory where the first switch would go bad.

There are demonstration videos comparing this pedal's tones to the real pedals, some of them are spot on. Not all of them, but some were pretty close. And the videos are six years old, the machine is likely better now than then.

just one correction - you don't assign a parameter to the external expression pedal you basically assigh a full set of dial positions to the "default" preset this is what you get when you have no expression pedal or if you plug the expression pedal in and have it at the heal down position then you set the expression pedal at toe down and dial in a second full set of dial positions and do the "hold to preset" just like the original preset (one clause here - has to be the same effect if you have preset one heal down set to octo fuzz you can't set preset 1 toe down to metal drive) so as you rock the expression pedal all the dial changes you made move proportionally and that alone is worth the price of getting the expression pedal. you can, for example, take a the tube screamer from slightly toasty english summer with a bass heavy sound through to fire alarm triggering scorcher Australian summer but change the eq envelope to dial out the bass and crank the treble to max and roll up the mids slightly.

I can recommend the Line 6 M5 as well, it’s an updated version of the 4 switch series with all the pedals in one as well as tempo subdivisions (dotted eighth n stuff), 24 presets and midi support

μ then you can just go with the HX Effects and get all M5 effects + all new ones from the Helix (such the new reverb, delays, etc...). It’s not the same price, but a whole lot more of features and effects. My 2¢

But the HX FX has a complex power adaptor, whereas the M5 is compatible with most third party power supply's. I like the Helux system but the FX is flawed in that respect.

sebastian sullivan fair point. But I believe the gain in effects and features might be worth to have a power adapter or a strong power supply (depending your type of pedalboard). But it’s indeed up to everyone to weight if it’s worth or not for them. Personally I like the new Helix effects and reverb (good enough in my opinion to be compared to Strymons... but again, some people might disagree on that). It’s good that we have so much choices to fit everyone’s preferences.

Just a word of warning; I wouldn't rely on this thing. Mine started freaking out in terms of its switching, which is digital, in that it would just turn off on its own and started responding to the stomp-switches less and less to a point that it started just staying off permanently. - I couldn't find a fix for it, nor any help from Line 6 other than to send it in for repairs at a hefty fee. - This pedal sucks, in my opinion. I never liked most of the sounds in it either. It is now a paperweight among my gear (and it is unnecessarily hefty for being a PCB inside).
