Hi! I've a little story around the line-6 dm-4 "distortion modeller": Some decade ago Steve Hackett ( for those, who don't know him: he was former lead guitarist of the classical "GENESIS" of the Peter-Gabriel-era) was onstage at the Düsseldorf "Philips Hall" - and, because i wrote my diploma exam work, about rock history , i could manage to have a short-time access to the stage during his dress rehearsal and - of course, because i'm guitarist - had an intense look at his gear and checked his pedal-board, where i saw, that he used not only the green well-known and legendary line-6 delay-modeller,.... but also the yellow dm-4 distortion modeller!! - By that time i myself was looking for a versatile overdrive/distortion pedal - and i thought, what is good enough for a such experienced premium-class professional guitar player, could not be bad for somone like me - so i decided to buy a dm-4 and was a bit astonished to find it that low-priced at reverb. Friends told me, that - in opposite to the delay of the same series - there often was put a bad name on the dm-4 - but for reasons, that noone really understands, because its in fact a real good overdrive/distortion and of a versatility, thats not found that easy! I think it is still that stereotype, that distortion and digital virtuality did not fit good together? ...who knows....?? However, i bought it and soon was really impressed of many of the modelled effect boxes sounds! - Indeed, in my ears, the only "legendary" fuzz box sound, that wasn't nailed extremly good, was the "fuzz face" model - but even that wasn't too far away from the orginal, it was only just "acceptable".... So, if you want a single device, which contains astonishing true sounds of a respectable series of overdrive, distortion & fuzz boxes classics from the 60ties, 70ties and 80ties, that became legendary ( as for example the sound of "satisfaction": The Maestro Fuzz-Tone, DoD overdrive/preamp 250 ( greets from Yngwie!) , the extremly rare Chandler Tube driver ( in my memory the first real tube driven overdrive pedal, that became well-known), a real good sample of the Ibz. Tube screamer, Boss Metal zone, Proco Rat, E.H. Big Muff, ...even J. Page's Vox Tone Bender, or "Flower Power" curiosities like the Colorsound OD (i swear, you can smell the incense of psychedelia burning!! ;) ...),- and many more (!!) - then THIS is the pedal, you need!! The sounds are mostly not ABSOLUTE EXACT identical ( the pedal is from around 2000...), but EXTREMLY CLOSE NEAR-BY. and the three EQ-knobs give you sound variations on each, that are not possible with the original devices .... but ONLY IF YOU WANT!! ( you can disable all, that isn' t part of the original box!!) plus an integrated noise gate ( also only, if you want it!!). I really don' understand, why this device sometimes got such a bad reputation - its really great and you meanwhile can get it for few then half of its original prize .... Try and test it ... you won't get disappointed!! Man, what a cool story getting to see Steve Hackett and check out his rig on stage! I love your invite on the DM4, I agree that it gets a bad reputation for being digital but I found it extremely usable and great emulations of classic drives and fuzzes! Thanks for you kind words Lincoln Six Echo!

I found one for $100 and I'm gonna buy it. Doesn't matter if it doesn't sound like the real deal. I want to give it a try and see how it sounds and how it feels. Maybe I'm about to find out a new favorite!

I think the problem with noodling on a demo is that everything begins to sound the same rather than the difference that is noted when playing a particular song.

Very valid point Tony! I definitely like playing to the sound and find more fun from that rather than playing the same song throughout the video though. especially with how different the models are on the DM4.

I’ve had one of these for 15 years and I think it sounds great but I really dislike how the knobs are completely digital. I have trouble dialing in the right volume on saved presets and once you click a preset you’re kinda stuck with it or have to remember how you had it but then random spikes happen. It’s just not fun to tweak live.

Yes I can totally see this being frustrating live. I had similar issues on a DL4 when switching between saved presets, more important on a drive though.
