TAFishing Graeme they're called coil feeders and you're supposed to put your hook bait in the groundbait that is on the feeder like a method feeder

i made one o you swan float quills and caught a few perch the other day. also a good alternative for split shot is surgical tubing with BB's inside only disadvantage is you have to slide the tubing on before the hook

Hi Graeme I make my own feeders, well worth it if you do a lot of river fishing, as this can add up in pounds not pence when losing feeders and we all lose feeders on snaggy fast rivers. The coil method type inline are easy to make just get some stiff rig tubing and even some felt tip pen inserts for running feeders' melt them at each end with a lighter to keep them inside the coil, you will get the idea! just go your local motorcycle scrap dealers and that's where you find all the different sizes in spring coils, you will even see these in tackle shops from between £1.50-£2.00 So cheap when your sourcing them yourself and altering them, I have them all shapes and sizes running fixed and inline fish safety feeders, I would guess I've saved hundreds over the years just making them and not buying them. Hope this helps guys and gives you a rough idea, I'm not saying it's the best way, but just a cheap way' and it works, give it a go at your local scrapyard, TOTALLY TOTAL AWESOMENESS Keep it up Graeme, great all round show to suit all ages👍🏼🎣🐟

Some lovely barbel there, when I see videos like this, I can’t wait to go fishing. I made a few items of tackle as a lad in school, in metal work class. I remember one item in particular that I was very proud of at the time, until it came to using it, I made a landing net head out of steel, then realised I could hardly lift it so it was practically useless.😁

I make my own for the Wye too, but I use cheapo plastic hair rollers for the body. Add lead strip, link and swivel, job done. I weigh them after they are made and write the weight on the lead strip, helps when you are digging for a slightly heavier/lighter one. My mates laugh at my lovely purple and pink feeders, but they cost about 10 pence each and it doesn't hurt so much when the Wye tackle fairy robs you of a dozen in a morning.
@Jaak_the_Belgian7 жыл бұрын
Tim, think about it. When Graeme loses one, it is not plastic. The iron will rust away. The ones I last made actually use a steel split pen (cotter pin) for weight.

We used to conceive and make our own tackle back in the 60s, even 70s because the range of gear we see nowadays was either not available, or unaffordable. It was so much more enjoyable too. Appreciate all of yours and Mike's videos. Best wishes. D.

Such a good idea - I had an idea though mate... if you left 3 or 4 more squares before your initial cut [more overhang] you could then use taht to hold the lead in place and then just double lock the 2 edges together with a fold over to hold it in place? I would love your thoughts on this!

Oh I forgot about the cage feeders, I've used chicken wire but it doesn't last long Graeme,I use mig welding wire, up to you what diameter, but you need a soldering gun with solder, power gum, some dead cow weights, barrel swivel, basically just make a small square 25mm 25mm by 45mm long. Your first one will take about 25 mins, after a few your rocking mate. 15 mins per feeder, well worth it for the self gratification of catching fish on tackle you have made from scratch, and cost you penny's in the process, happy days. Good luck Graeme🎣

Not really freshwater fisherman, but here in Spain beach fishing is not so good, so tend to goto a local lake for carp using homemade open end feeders using a hair curler, strip of lead and a rubber O-ring tucked under the lead, they work fine and cost nothing when her in doors is watching

Just a question: Why not use a much shorter hook length so that the bait is much closer to the feeder?
@TAFishing Жыл бұрын
I was told the fish are spooked by the feeder so that's why they advise using a longer hooklength.
@newsmonger77 Жыл бұрын
@TAFishing Oh OK. Thank you. Don't method feeders spook fish because they have a very short hooklength? Or am I missing something? I only ask this because I used a cage feeder yesterday using a very short hooklength and it seemed to work for me.
@TAFishing Жыл бұрын
Method feeders I would say are more for commercial waters with lots of fish stocked all competing for food. In a river like the Wye the flow is so strong the line goes round in a bow to the method feeder so could also spook the Barbel. I was told to use a long trace on the Wye as that's what the matchmen use,and it catches. Of course if they were all pounding Barbel with a method feeder I would be doing the same. I don't live up the Wye its almost a 3 hour drive for me,so if the tackle shop gives me a suggested tactic I use it. Only when it doesn't work will I start experimenting. Plus of course the rocks and boulders in the River Wye would eat expensive method feeders for breakfast.
