Field Trips with Robert Field

Күн бұрын

In this episode my time in South Dakota is coming to an end, but first I'm heading out to fly fish for brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout in Spearfish Creek. As soon as we arrive we begin seeing trout everywhere, and after a million fly changes, we finally begin to dial in a pattern. This is the perfect end to an incredible trip to Black Hills National Forest.
COMMENT BELOW and tell me where I should go next and what I should fish for! And ask me any questions you guys have! What did you guys think of this South Dakota series?

Rob, I’ve seen all of your videos and, despite the audio issues, I have to say this is one of my favorites. Going out, exploring a stream, and the pure joy you had catching those browns was amazing. I hope within the next year or so I can meet up with you in Panama, but until then, if you get back around Missouri I will have to show you some of my favorite places.

Creek fishing in the mountains is tough (especially fly fishing). Limited water, so much vegetation (snag hazards), and steep conditions. The fish are almost always small but it is fun.

We just moved back down to SW Nebraska where my wife is from to help with the family farm after her mom's passing this last summer. For the past 8 yrs we have lived in NW panhandle of Nebraska. Use to go up to Ft Robinson near Crawford. We would fish the hatchery ponds and soldier creek catching tiger trout browns cutthroat and Brooke trout then hit the ponds for rainbows after that. It was a long walk where not a lot of people went since it was in the middle of no where and was all that was left after massive floods took out the hatchery. Now the trout are both stocked and wild run fish. Was always a blast because never knew if you would get a little 10 inch fish or a 5 plus pound brown trout.

I'll add to my first drift down the creek trying to find the hatchery ponds I tossed a piece of dough bait on a ultra light. I had only caught stocked rainbows on local ponds before this. I see a blow up and set the hook and caught a little 6 inch Brooke trout. I was 36 at the time and honestly was a excited and happy as I was when I was a kid catching my first fish and later on catching my first Northern pike that was just short of 40 inches.

When it comes to sight-fishing, I don't care if it's a 2" fish or a 200lb fish....it really gets the endorphins/adrenalin flowing when you get that fish to bite! Topwater and flyfishing are the best for it, though anything will do it. The most amazing day I ever had flyfishing was a TINY mountain creek and I caught probably 100+ cutthroat trout ranging from a couple inches to about 8 inches. It was an absolute blast. And I've fished the stonefly hatch on the Deschutes and multiple hatches on the Metolious for trout that were measured in pounds, not inches. Including ripping streamers for Bull Trout WAY over 10lbs.

I grew up along a stream in the Black Hills and started flyfishing when I was 10. I ended up going to school in Spearfish and fished in the canyon a lot. I have spots in several states that I keep secret. I am very conscious of how precious and fragile these resources are and how wonderful it is to find spots on your own. I hope people are careful about showing and telling exactly where they fish and hunt. I liked your video and your enthusiasm. I also subscribed.

Suggested fishing in West border of Wyoming (path North to South) for kayak and fly fishing. Yellowstone National Park - Yellowstone Lake and Yellowstone River, Grand Teton National Park - Jackson Lake and Snake River, Pinedale Wyoming - Green River, New Fork, Willow, and Fremont Lakes along with the Green River then down south to Fontenelle Reservoir and finally Flaming George National Recreation Area which dips into Utah. All have wonderful fishing opportunities with sizable fish with some trophy size available. Primary species are Cutthroat trout, Rainbow trout, Brown trout, Lake trout, Brook trout, Mountain Whitefish, and Kokanee salmon once you reach Flaming Gorge.

I do suggest this loop be done in the fall once shool starts as the tourist trade drops significantly. I particulary like fly fishing the Snake River below Jackson Lake dam near Moran Wyoming with the Tetons as the backdrop. My preferred time to fly fish is right after the Dam’s discharge is reduced generally the first Monday of October which greatly improves wading opportunities. Crowds and traffic is low, lots of camping available (can be quite cold), but fly fishing can be great. Species include Lake Trout, Snake River Cutthroat, Browns, and Mountain Whitefish. I have not make that trip for a few years as it is a long drive for me.

I remember starting fishing in the creek by my house and catching my first smallmouth. I remember it being on a tiny bronze panther Martin. And now my rep includes fishing salmon, steelhead and browns on the big creek here, the lower Niagara. Where as catching a 2lb smallmouth was a huge deal I don’t even take pictures with those guys anymore and wait for the 4s and 5s now crazy how time has changed.

The hills have been heavily publicized for decades it's location is what preserves it. There's much better fishing for size and quality just outside the hills, or better yet drive west to the bighorn mountains. Can go after brook, brown, rainbow, cutthroat and all the Goldens you care to chase. Just gotta lace the boots up....
