Some believe, that thermals can only occur with enough heating of the sun. But there is an exemption to this rules, like i am showing you in this video.
In mountainous regions there can a phenomena occur, which lift up a glider till sunset or even longer. Watch now our adventure while flying in the austian alps

I spent much of the 70s climbing in the German and Austrian Alps. This video is like coming home. As my knees gave out I had to give up running and climbing. As my back gave out, white water and sea kayaking. Now in my 70s, I've begun gliding. I pray that I have to opportunity to come home to Europe and fly over these beautiful landscapes. Thanks Rudi!

I think it's going to be confluence, because convergence is when large continental airmasses, hot and cold, converge, creating useful updrafts (and downdrafts to avoid). Happy trails in the Austrian skies! I already sent link to your great video to two Austrian friends I know (I'm in Korea).

Fantastic story telling and graphics. Brilliant use of the 360 degree camera at 1:20 as you thermal before following the ridge - really helps with a sense of the direction of your task. Your use of sortinglab is great as well. Your graphics illustrating the convergence (best term I think) in the evening are first class. Must have taken you a long time to put the video together. Hard work gives a really professional video. Thanks so much.

Thank you very much for this comment Graeme! Indeed it is absolutely a lot of work to produce so a video, so such a great appreciation like yours gives me a lot of return and helps to keep the motivation to make more of them. Thank you very much!

Very cool flight! I enjoy the 360 panning perspective during thermals. Seems like a good tool to help non-glider folks understand the idea.

Very nice! Love to see these mountains again in der alten Heimat... Still know almost all of these peaks :-) Must be a lot of work to edit from a 360 camera. I'm on the fence about getting one. Did you use the max resolution or did you turn it down somewhat to be able to record such a long flight?

Thanks Rudi! Another really engaging video. It appears the "evening confluence" is not strictly in the "middle" of the valley; was this influenced by the upper wing blowing across the valley (since you expected wave when talking about the forecast, I understand the general wind was "across" valleys, rather than "along") I'd welcome your comments, thanks again!

Hi David, you carefully watched the video! You are absolutely right, the wind was from the northwest, so about 45° across the valley. The evening convergence was found more on the southern side of the valley on that day. With less wind it is usually found more in the middle of the valley. Thank you for your profound comment :-)!

The Austrian Alps is fantastic! I just love the beautiful mountains. :-) Looking at one of my favourite books: “Understanding The Sky (Dennis Pagen)”… He does talk about “Evening Convergence in a Valley”, and also call it “Magic Air” or “Wonder Winds”.

Seems like all youtube pilots over the last couple years have switched to this ultra-stabilzed footage. Does it really capture the feeling of flight or is it just some camera trick fad that will pass eventually?
