"You gotta get yourself in some deep water that you probably had no business being in - and then you gotta figure out how to climb your way out of it." You just described my mixing journey. I'm in *way* over my head....and loving it. I still suck at it, but I'm having a great time. Every new skill I acquire is a victory.

the original video was crazy. it was a full-blown documentary, pro in every way, with story and of course with a ton of information. usually to make exactly this would take a full crew and twice the amount of time you took. and all while you were just doing the video as a side project, while you were actually building out your studio. mad, mad respect

Loved the video and the extended Q&A! Had no idea you were shut down for 10 months that’s crazy! As a fellow DIY’er, really appreciate someone taking the time to build it themselves properly and thinking through everything. Gives me motivation and ideas for my projects (And likely a future studio revamp for myself as well!) Great set of videos and happy you got a killer room set up, can’t wait to see the full atmos rig!!

You can Install a RetroFIt WIndow on the Inside to help lower Noise Dual or Triple Glazed.( from cars or neighbors mowing and STILL keep the VEIW of the Tree Line. I Have a similar issue so I draw Blinds at an ANGLE and put portable (2) 3.5"D x 2'W x 4"H ROCKWOOL Panels. I built 7.5’ Partition Walls that connect & move anywhere in STUDIO ( closest to a Vocal Booth ) but glad I made these. George Amodei

I would love to see a video where you have a Q&A with everyone involved in the treatment and measurement of the room. I'd love some technical explanation of some of the choices and why having two subs is better than one.

I have been poor my whole life, so if I wanted something done, I always had to do it myself! I’m now 72 and retired, with the same mindset! Unfortunately, crawling up into my attic to run speaker wires and network cables, now takes month's, instead of days! Do to the fact that I’m still broke and now too old, I truly enjoyed watching your journey with your studio. I can’t wait to see your Atmos install.🤔

Having built my own 9.1.6 Atmos studio I totally agree that if you take your time and watch loads of youtube videos you can build your own studio. It really helps if you can use basic tools then you can build anything with will power. As you say we don't all have buckets loads of cash so we have to do it ourselves :) Great video and my respect for you went up a huge amount knowing that you did the work yourself :) Well done and look forward to more of your videos.

Like the A-Roll setup. Diffusion background looks killer. I’d throw some tube lights on the floor under the diffusion to reduce the shadows cast from the lights above.

I've been lucky my whole family are in construction. When they need electrical that is my area. But also I have worked with wood and have helped build a few houses. When I get back to the States I will be building my space as well as my furniture. It's been fun watching you build your space. Can't wait until your Atmos system goes in.

Wise words Colt. Especially on the note about learning how to do things because "anybody" could do it. I worked in a band and used "KZbin EDU" to learn how to use a mixer, then just using the mixer with experience. Which led to me getting a job at a local hotel doing AV work, now 3 years later being able to invest into my Atmos rig!! It's all about the mindset. How bad do you really want to learn something? If you don't want to, pay someone that does know, and you can't go cheap no knowledge. To me, it's worth more than anything besides my time. Thank you Colt.

Amazing work! I really enjoyed the video. I think you can actually use your mtrx studio for room correction. You have the measurements so it would be easy to do with rew I’m sure it will optimize the sound even more. But I guess you will do that for atmos anyway. Good luck !

I spent my share of years working in studios with no windows, and it was so disorienting and NOT healthy. 8am to 8pm and all you know is the morning sun and the blackness of night. 8am to 8am and you lose all track of what day it is. 8pm to 8pm is even worse. When I built my own place I didn’t even entertain not having windows. Just being able to see the street, the house next door and the squirrels in the tree outside the window keeps me sane. The sonic compromises are well worth it.

Recognizing when it's time to call a guy is tricky for those of us who have always been "good enough" to do things ourselves whether out of necessity or desire to learn. It's great that you are honest with everyone about how and when you made those choices.

Hey Colt, food for thoughts for the next video (when you will cover the Athmos piece). That would be interesting to show us how you did handle the cabling for the speakers attached to the ceiling and those who are going to be around the listening position. Each of them will required a power outlet and a XLR iirc. Love wires but we don't want to see them :)

Great job Colt 👍🏼 can you speak a little bit about the lights. Are they insulation contact safe? Did you have to cut and glue/staple the fabric around the openings? I’m always worried about catching the fabric on fire with recessed lighting so any recommendations would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Great video. I have a question about the freestanding acoustic panels to give you local symmetry around the mix position. Could you share some information about the design of these panels? Is it insulation with a solid core (eg mdf) or is it insulation with just a pegboard on the backside?
