I know that animals (probably) wouldn't recognize/understand a smiling or sad cartoon face, but the idea/intention is pretty fresh and smart. Also, from what the other commenters said, it can also be a rather educational (?) toys for kids/toddlers, that if they (somehow) break it, it'll reveal the "sad face" to show that their toys wasn't "happy" to be treated like that. I'm sorry if my choice of words confuses you. English isn't my first language.
