KITEBOARDING WORLD RECORD - EPIC JUMPING FROM 909 METERS CLIFF
Gokova Murphy Cliff Project
Location: Gokova, Turkey
Date: Sept. 14, 2014
Idea: Marek “Murphy” Zach

Kite: inflated kite, Ozone C4, 14m
Preparation:
- huge experience - hundreds of sililar jumps on snowkite
- consulting with local paragliders
- careful site inspection (mountain, city, beach)
- weather and winds forecast monitoring
- sleep, proper nutrition, relaxation and punk style meditation
Sponsors:
Jovi travel, JoviProManagement, Ozone, Mystic, Future Kiting, SP, Go Pro, Snowboard Zezula, Acai, Pitcha, KiteTracker
Camerman: Jacek Gadzinowski
Editor: Michał Pakulski
Translation: Tomek Jurek, Linguaservice.pl
Music: MC Xander 'Spaceship Earth www.mcxander.com
-------------------------------------
We tend to travel a lot together, Murphy and I, and we both like to check out new places and kite new spots. Gokova’s been on our “to do” list for a long time now and when we got the chance to visit it with Jovi Travel we were really anxious to check out the spot and conditions there, especially since we’ve heard a lot about it before from our friends.
The spot itself is kinda like the famed Gorge but without all the civilization surrounding it. A large bay surrounded by high hills on both sides. There is a nearby river which connects to the spot and little town nearby but that’s about it. The surrounding hills provide a nice venturi effect with light, steady winds which, combined with the thermal winds, which start to kick in around noon, tend to get stronger during the day.
Naturally, as soon as Murphy got down to the spot he started looking at the hills. Being the seasoned snowkiter that he is, sights like that only make his mind drift towards new “cliff projects”. In his case it’s usually a spur of the moment thing, but this time we accidently bumped into some local paragliders who gave us the ins and outs of the spot. So after checking out the possible places for take off and landing we decided to double check the gear, grab something to eat, get a good night’s sleep and prepare for the following day.
On the day of the jump we decided to wait a bit till the wind got a bit stronger; I kitted Murphy out with my GoPro; he took his kitetracker, rigged up the 14m Ozone C4 and we headed towards the highest of the local cliffs. It was a bit tricky to set up at first on the, rocky, bushy, steep hillside but with some help from the curious locals we soon got everything ready. Without unnecessary goodbye talks Murph jumped of the cliff and was soon gliding steadily towards the spot’s beach. The whole “flight” took him a little under 9 minutes and, as we learned from the kitetracker, it was a descent of 909 meters. His jump caused quite a commotion at the local kite station and on his landing a small crew of our friends and locals welcomed him.
All in all everything went very smooth thanks to the steady winds and Murphy’s know how. It was the first time I was a part of his famed “cliff projects” but for me it was definitely one for the books… And as we’re getting to books, we’ll see what Mr Guiness has to say about this SLE kite jump.

That was amazing but totally crazy. For anyone thinking of doing this themselves, kites for kitesurfing AREN'T made for parasailing or flying generally, they are too unstable. Totally different things. One little puff of wind in the wrong direction and you're finished. This guy looks like he researched the weather very well, and was very experienced even when flying backwards. But he even mentions hitting two different winds and I think he was incredibly lucky it went in his favour.

Actually I don't really think that they are too unstable. Look at a Soft Kite that Paragliders all are, they crash quite a few times and just fold together in Gusts. This can't happen with tube kites. It's merely that the lines are not made for it and you don't have any safety in case you'd fall. I sometimes fly soft kites when kiteboarding, just horrible Things. One wrong steering Action and they fold down and build a big undefinable lump :D :D Soft kites are just way lighter so you can use thermic winds a lot better...

I felt proud. I do paragliding. I did this hill (take-off) with my hands, digging the bushes, breaking the stones and we put some sand. so we fly from here. I love this this take-off and Gökova. Great shampion Marek Murphy Zach did unbelievable thing. His wing is half of our wing. Congratulations, great master of kite-surf.

It was probably complicated enough jumping from that cliff and catching the wind the right way. Would have been a lot more difficult with a board

Funny disclaimer/warning ... ever heard of paragliding or speed flying? 14m, that's a huge wing. Nice to see you learned about meteo-wind and ground-wind. Finally, with a paraglider, you would not be flying backwards, my friend.

Ordinary minds would say "cool dangerous stuff" but other minds would think, putting aside the risk he took, he is actually doing just the paragliding thing with a long lined collapse prof air filled glider. The future of safer collapse proof paragliders happening right in front of our eyes.
@hercion
@hercion 10 жыл бұрын
well well, we will see how "collapse proof" tubekites really are. contrary to popular belief collapses on paragliders are a safety feature, absorbing bad stuff caused by strong thermal turbulences and dispensing kinetic energy.. the guy in the video was just lucky... no proper harness, no rescue chute, no double lines.. said that, i am very curious how that disciple of gliding with tubekites will evolve - but please if anyone plays "test pilot", then why not carry a rescue chute and use a proper harness ?
@LaurenMartins
@LaurenMartins 10 жыл бұрын
"paragliding collapse is safety" repeated religiously like a vitriol since 1980. We are all doomed, literally. Paraglider collapse is the number 1 causes of death and serious injuries in paragliding. Because hanggliders don't collapse, paragliders should collapse? That's the biggest nonsense I've heard. The pilot will not loop or fall into the canopy of long lined collapse proof paragliders. Period. No technology that drives the development of collapse proof paragliders should be neglected.

I know I'm kind of late to the party, but how do you expect paragliders to be so portable and easy to prepare? I mean the thing with hang gliders is you aren't really getting anywhere far with them if you don't have a car. We don't really hear about hang gliding hike and fly do we? And sure, the kite is inflatable, but do you really want to be walking around everywhere with a pump to inflate your paraglider on every takeoff, which would also take ages? And from a safety point of view, if you somehow managed to get a cravate on a rigid kite I doubt you'd be able to fix it. Anyway, I wouldn't want to be more than a couple of meters above water if I'm hanging off of one of those things...

OK so this is parasailing using a slightly undersized parasail with a board on your feet. OK, cool, but it's still basically parasailing. I know people who do this with skis attached but as I point out to them and they agree: "OK, cool, but it's still basically parasailing"... Now wingsuiting and landing on water with a board, that would be interesting. Since somebody has already done a wingsuit waterlanding (skipped like a stone, but it worked) using a board would be really cool. That transition from horizontal forward flight to standing on the board would be the crux...
