The Dance Macabre is the replacement of the haunted castle from the 70s. This was opened by Kate Bush and she also had her own gravestone there. Now Epica. The new attraction uses elements and music from the haunted castle.

Epica did a collaboration with the second most visited themepark in Europe called Efteling. Epica was asked by Efteling to sing the song Danse Macabre for the opening of their new dark ride also called Danse Macabre. The dark ride Danse Macabre is a run down haunted monastery. It was invented by people in Efteling with a total new ride mechanism so this dark ride you will not see in other themeparks in the world. Danse Macabre was an already existing song which Epica altered a bit. Danse Macabre is a danse with the dead. That is also what the dark ride called Danse Macabre is in Efteling. It is a danse with epic music, a ride with spinning church benches and a visual display of creepy things you would see in a run dow monastery. The waiting line leads you through a cemetery with music and moving parts. At the opening of Danse Macabre the waiting line was 4 hours to get in this dark ride. People from other countries came for the opening of this dark ride and it was all over the news on tv. Efteling is one of the oldest and themeparks in the world. It has a huge fairytale forest which you can get lost in for hours, some of the best dark rides in the world and rollercoasters. It is filled with fairies, goblins, fairytales and even the ATM and garbage cans are themed. The garbage cans are depicted as funny men who suck up garbage. Kids see this as a game so kids try to find as much garbage as they can to put in the garbage sucking trashs can so the park is always clean. They have the man / puppet with the longest neck in the world called "Long Neck" and also a big statue donkey that poops golden Efteling coins. Kids also see this as game to catch those golden Efteling coins. Americans and English peope who visited Efteling have called Efteling the dark version of Disney because Efteling doesnt sugarcoat the original fairytales by the brothers Grimm like Disney does. Efteling is built in a nature reserve and is not owned by a big corporation like Disney. It is owned by a foundation that is why prices of entree, food and hotel are lower than Disney. Is Efteling only for kids !? No, it is a family themepark it has something for everyone playgrounds for children, some of the best dark rides in the world, rollercoasters and dualing rollercoasters. Efteling was built before Disney parks even existed and the dark ride Danse Macabre, Epica sang the song in front of, is one of the most expensive haunted houses (monastery) in the world. It cost 35 million euros to built it. When you ask someone from the Netherlands what should I visit besides Amsterdam most would say go to Efteling. Since Efteling is one of the oldest themeparks in the world, as said it was built before Disney parks even existed, a lot of themeparks that were built later took inspiration from Efteling. One example is the first ever Madhouse that was built in the world. Later on other themeparks copied that idea of Madhouses making them even better. A madhouse is where the room spins around you so you think you sit on the walls or the ceiling. There are lots of videos in English of people from England and the US on KZbin who vlogged about their visit to Efteling.

Delighted that you got back to Epica in your rotation and it’s an ideal song for the season. Hoping that you can slot in some tracks Live from the AFAS concert and you have to check out some of the tracks from their Covid Livestream - Omega Alive - Try ‘Once upon a Nightmare’ and ‘Kingdom of Heaven part 3’ from that stream and you will turn into a Porcupine your arm hairs will be so stiff.😂

The white dress is a link to the promotion that keate bush did with the orginal ride called spookslot. her eyes link it to the new ride there is a cat with similar eyes. The video was recorded a few weeks before the ride opened it was spotted people from epica walked around. hope we hear this version from time to time in the ride as a random suprise.

As a proud Dutchie I just wanted to share the original music from this attraction. I've been to the Efteling since I was a little girl and it's the most incredible amusementpark. The Efteling and Epica has done an amazing job with this collaboration. Some trivia to go with the Efteling's collabs with bands/musicians. The current "Danse Macabre" attraction is the upgrade of its predecessor called "Spookslot" (Haunted Castle). None other than Kate Bush sang at the official opening in 1978 (orig video on YT). She earned herself an Efteling tombstone (the Epica tombstone is a clear reference, as is the white dress Simone's wearing). Here's Kate's video: "Kate Bush (Efteling) - original recording 1978 • TopPop". Both tombstones are part of the graveyard that the public gets to visit on their way tt Abbey. There's also several "cameos" 5:56 The singing monks are: Jeroen Verheij (r), designer at the Efteling & Joost (LUL!) van den Broek (l) of Ayreon/After Forever/etc fame and also Epica's producer. Simone's yellow/blue eyes are a reference tt children's book "Danse Macabre" by Dutch writer Paul van Loon. Coen Janssen's wife Linda is also in the choir. Their son Pepijn Janssen is one of the two kids, lured into the Abbey by Simone. Then there's another legendary Dutch songster, Anneke van Giersbergen (the godmother of "female fronted" hardrock/metal and inspiration for Simone, Floor etc) doing several collabs with the Efteling. In 1997, The Gathering used music from an Efteling attraction in one of their songs (Nighttime Birds). In 2011 Anneke lend her voice tt soundtrack of "Ravelijn", another Efteling attraction. And in 2015 she provided the "Witte Wieven" vocals (ghostly mythical creatures, associated with mist) for another attraction "Baron 1898" (a dive coaster). The Efteling is high class spooky metal /rant🤘

small correction: Kate Bush didn't sing at the opening but she recorded six songs before the attraction was opened to the public. The same as they did now with Epica. Which is very cool.

I hope that you know, or will check out, the ORIGINAL song. I will point you to the rabbit hole: The original is Danse Macabre, by Camille Saint-Saëns, written in 1875(!). This song is a (very well done) reinterpretation of that. Also (I don’t want tot go in too much detail) it is firmly engrained into Dutch culture. The attraction, which uses the same music, replaces an old (45yrs) attraction ‘het Spookslot’, with the same theme. One of the iconic set-pieces is a yellow, floating violin. The old Spookslot was opened with Kate Bush singing. All this points back to tales from the Middle Ages, where the stories were built about dancing with the Dead.
