But I've had my c300iii for about 2 months with a few projects under my belt with it and I'm so happy I ended up keeping it instead of going for the Ursa 12K. Not that the Ursa is a bad camera, obviously. But I'm just happy I didn't get caught up in the spec marketing that goes on. I think the noise is due to insanely amount of pixels 80MP on such a small sensor 27.03mm x 14.25mm (Super35) which requires lot of light to make the photosites lit correctly. My photo camera Canon 5Ds has 50.6 MP on 36×24 mm (Full-frame sensor) and is behaving the same. The moiré issues are eliminated by OPLF (low pass) filter I would recommend to use one .You need sharp-clean glass to benefit from 12k resolution and any micro jitters on this 80MP sensor will cause blurry background when shooting wildlife. In regards artifacting at 18:1 B Raw compression, I think is ok to use with lower resolution but 12k is little too much for this compression ratio. This is great camera to work in controlled environment.

I'm not sure if you guys have heard of slashcam. But they mentioned your video in an article about 12k dynamic range and moire. Essentialy saying that isn't a problem with the camera but with scaling of the footage: "By the way to the topic 4k/8k readout: because there are no lenses that can resolve 12k, the in photosite edges cause cause unsharpness, which has an similar effect to an optical low pass filter. People who record in native 12k don't just have poor rolling shutter and high data rates, but have to run the computing intensice scaling in post. The biggest negative of this concept howver is, that the user needs to understand that. Because if recorded resolution and timeline resolution don't match, you will get artifacts and moire. This is what we expected when we discussed the problem in our forum. Now we can proof it using resolve public beta 17. Because in this beta we can select encoding resolution" "Because these youtubers used premiere pro. We expect it to scale different"(rough translations) Essentialy the premiere braw plugin is busted.

I’m presuming that similar to RED, Alexa etc, BMD co-design their sensor with a specialist company. Small integrators typically do not have the know-how to implement advanced low level ICs. Likely the sensor is modified from an existing design and then customized to match the pattern BMD has patented and matches their BRAW. So the idea of the sensor clearly is very BMD, but I’d be surprised if BMD suddenly had a huge team of extremely skilled IC designers in house. I believe need to be really big like Sony or Canon to have the entire chain in-house. If any small player get the entire chain in-house that would be interesting and surprising.

I've noticed a lot of these cheaper cinema cameras tend to have similar issues with moiré, aliasing, etc. If Blackmagic or someone else in the "budget" cinema camera field could make a camera with a similar sensor but a heavy AA filter that blurs the image between around a 2x2 section of photosites to essentially eliminate moiré and then record at a much lower resolution and give an image with no chroma subsampling. Kinda like a modern version of the striped sensor from the Sony F35.
@Deaddinoproductions4 жыл бұрын
Finally started adding Blackmagic cameras to my arsenal a couple months ago (bmpcc 4K) and quickly found myself battling with the moire issue. I’ve been a GH5 user for years and had never dealt with moire as problematic on that camera as what I was seeing on just my 2nd or 3rd shoot with the bmpcc 4K. Very happy with the performance otherwise and it’ll be hard for me to ever go back from the BRAW workflow, but the moire is a considerable problem that Blackmagic needs to address.

I am more interested in the 4k and 8k footage, knowing that when I buy this camera I wont shoot 12k anyway, but I will buy it for the downsampled 4k with full sensor, that should destroy all the sensor noise and provide insanely sharp 4k images. Really interested to see what other people owning this camera say about that. The blackmagic raw only is a bummer, I've been having issues with the braw for premiere plugin for ever now and every update seems to fix one thing and make new bugs anyway, it's really frustrating so I've switched to prores on my pocket.

Love Blackmagic Cameras but this time i'll go with the Komodo... Not a fan of the race for more resolution. Even 4k is a hassle sometimes in post and even my upscaled original bmcc looks great on a 46" 4k tv in normal viewing distance. Only when you sit close to a let's say 32" pc monitor it's where 4k really shines. But that's just for me, none of my clients has such a monitor and i could sell them upscaled 2k footage as 4k all day. Rant aside. You can get rid of moiré in post by tracking the problematic area with a mask and applying the right amount of temporal noise reduction (it depends of the shot how much frames and amount of NR you'll need). Saved tons of shots that way in the past since the original bmcc was so prone to creating moiré.

Quick note : not "all other manufacturers" use off the shelves sensors. Namely : Arri, RED, Canon and Sony. They all custom made their sensors (even of they are made in someone else's factory, as it's the case with the URSA 12K sensor [Blackmagic doesn't manufacture sensors it's just the first time they are not using an off the shelves product]). And as for Sony, CineAlta cameras (Venice, F55 or F65) don't use Sony Semicon chips but custom and exclusive sensors. Great review nonetheless but I am very nerdy about those sort of things ;-( EDIT : oh and no you are not shooting "Imax". It is NOT a 65mm camera. And as of today it has not been certified by Imax as a digital camera suited for digital Imax delivery (which some call "liemax" because... Imax is equivament to 18K [ok 12 to 13 in 2.40 aspect ratio, I'll give you that)

This can be easily done. But, since the Moire appears at relatively small spatial frequency (visible even at 1000lp/pw), you would effectively end up with a 2k camera. @7:59 - THANK YOU for noting that HD is all you need, really. Now, realize that there was almost zero meaningful progress in camera technology in the last 3-5 years. No global shutter, no better dynamic range. Just bigger res. Which is like empty calories. Not so nutritious to your final image.
@eladbari4 жыл бұрын
Yet, the manufacturers create this craze within customers who really think they're upgrading, while they're not. Truth is, these manufacturers have nothing new to offer to us, but they have to keep selling, so they use resolution as key marketing. It's all bull, man :\
@RiceCubeTech4 жыл бұрын
Bigger res is important for VFX, tracking, and certain other technologies. Also, DR has gotten better, in cheaper cameras. 50 thousand dollar reds and arris already had 16 stops years ago, but they’re huge cameras but now smaller cameras are hitting 14 useable stops. Some cameras have global shutters, even in the mirrorless world. It’s just that for many things a rolling shutter is more efficient and cheaper. The tech is there, the demand is just not. Global shutter only matters for people creating high end content (movies and commercials for big companies). The average person won’t notice the difference. HD is horrid when watching on a big screen. I’d rather have decent 4K than amazing hd. And by decent I mean 13 stops DR minimum, and a solid codec behind it. If the tech allows it, why not have more resolution? Arri is king still in the pro market, but there’s zero reason for them to not add more resolution. Sensor tech has evolved and shooting 4K comes with very little drawbacks when the camera has enough in the budget to fix the issues. There’s only really issues when you’re cramming into a sub 10k budget. A 50-80 thousand dollar camera shouldn’t have issues. There are pro cameras that I think are better than the arri. I vastly prefer the Full frame Sony Venus 8k image. It looks sharper, I prefer the color science and I think the DR is on par.
@eladbari4 жыл бұрын
@@RiceCubeTech What do you mean by "Rolling shutter is more efficient" ? For the manufacturer? Yes, but for the user? Not sure. As someone who is inspired by film, wanting to get as close as possible to it- that jello effect jusr ruins everything. A camera such as the experimental Digital Bolex- might have less resolution, yet the dynamic range and it's global shutter are so useful in reaching that filmy look. You love the sharper, high-tech kinda look. That's your style, I guess. This look only distances me from what I watch. I wanna see things being organic on screen. That means not having super sharp image. And I believe hollywood also doesn't chase sharpness. The soften their images [especially for the actresses]. And I also think there's this undefined feel to each camera. It won't show on the specs sheet, but you can just feel it. It's how objects & people move in the frame. How the camera captures movement. Blackmagic/Panasonic feel fitting mostly for documentary look (in my eyes). RED/Arri/Canon feels more filmy. I can be subjective, but that's my take on it.
@morucek3 жыл бұрын
There is a reason bc Hollywood is shooting on Alexa.
@RiceCubeTech3 жыл бұрын
@@eladbari yes that’s what I meant, for the manufacturer. They aren’t going to put global shutters in a consumer camera being sold for less than 5 grand. It’s just not feasible to include with the current state of tech. Beyond that, the red Komodo has a global shutter and the arri Alexa mini doesn’t, but I’d rise the arri over the Komodo every day of the week. A global shutter doesn’t always mean it’s going to be noticeably better than a rolling shutter. Look at the a7siii, it’s a rolling shutter but it’s very slight and hardly noticeable. Rolling shutters can get close to global, just not 100 percent. And they’re way cheaper to produce
