What I usually do when the budget is tight and for instance, there's only money for two cameras, is one goes to the wide angle (and funnily, we have been doing this clean plate to get the mics and lights closer for years, so now that I see it on your channel, I think we are doing things right haha), and then the other camera goes to the main speaker of the interview, a good closeup. then, at the end, I'd turn this camera to the interviewer and ask them to ask the questions again and then do some nodding and gestures in silence so we can cut them into the edit, so it looks that there's always three cameras. Usually it works like a charm, and in Spain, where I am based, a tight budget is waaaaay tighter than a tight budget in the US. You couldn't imagine how much, things are so different around here in terms of production money. Anyway, thanks a lot for your content! I love what you guys teach and how funny and ironic you are. BTW been following lewis for a while now and he is great! take care

It is not every time that you get the luxury of high ceilings - time and time again I found myself and the crew plus two people crammed in a tight space. Being able to raise your lights high up, or far enough from your subject, honestly just makes all the difference in the world.

I'm impressed that your plate was able to be consistent enough to use given that you took away the lights. Somehow that didn't make it too dark. Good work! I like this idea of using a plate to clean up aspects of a shot that are static.

One of the best lighting setups I've learned is the back cross key lighting. Love the idea of removing the lights and boom mics with a clean plate. I'll have to utilize that in my next interview shoot!
@xxphactor2 жыл бұрын
this is my normal interview lighting, except for a couple things. I don't like to use one's key as a backlight because it's not really a backlight. It's on the same side as the key so it's not adding anything. I use my grids to focus the key to that person. The strength of that boom arm is the key. I have boom arms that I bought years ago and they don't have teeth, so they slump under weight. I end up using sandbags or I rachet strap the boom from the hook to the legs which gives me comfort. Lately, I have been using a lantern ball in the middle of the chairs, and then use a big fill light (usually a 4x4) over the wide cam. I haven't had any issue with raccoon eyes doing it that way. Doing it this way also gives me a high key-like set.

FWIW I always frame the OTS angles to give the option of a tight clean single and a dirty medium shot. Watching people talk to nobody off the side of frame just gives me the heebies. Aputure is definitely the best (at spamming their wares via KZbin creators).

@x--.2 жыл бұрын
It did change the background, at least in the example they gave at the top of the video but not enough to be noticeable in the medium shots. The background art was far enough away where it seems like there wasn't a lot of spill from the big boxes. Still would have been interesting to see, tbh. Maybe a timelapse from the perspective of the big US flag ;)

Seems like the kind of thing where shooting the clean plate as a still in RAW, using some strobes and getting a kind of multi exposure HDR. The real estate photo channels call this “flambient”

Like your self depricating style. I know the closer the key the softer it will be, and love it when one light can do two jobs, but moving your key lights just a bit further back though, would give you some more wrap around backlight. Good channel, thank you.

My producer is always rolling her eyes whenever I ask to order something because she knows it is going to be something related to darn lights! I light and back light everything in the studio and at home. I light and back light the plants, pillows, the dog's bowl, his bed and probably a few of his bones are lit up somewhere. I create shorts just to light something. Keep up the excellent presents.

Another way to light (if you're getting the clean light anyways) is placing a lantern right in the middle with flags to the back of it to control the spill on the background. Like wise for the mics. There's plenty of space between the speakers and that would've saved you from setting up 2 lights and booming them over
@flochfitness2 жыл бұрын
Great tip!
@jm1jonas2 жыл бұрын
That way works if you're on a budget or short on time (been there, done that), but you loose the backlight, that's why Cross light is so common and pretty much a standard for 2 people interviews.
@adilrafiq912 жыл бұрын
@@jm1jonas indeed but these stands cost 400$ each which imo is way too much if spent for basic setups like this. Some relatively cheaper c stands can get the hairlight job done fairly easily. In such controlled environment, even Aputure MC's can do the job

My favorite camera setup is 7:22: looks most like an interview setup to me. The backlight helps, but maybe I'm having an issue with the temperature of the background. I like the original orange more than the cold blue.
@ivanjermakov2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I also found it the most familiar. The backlight was disturbingly bright, and the main light was not soft enough. The first setup was most natural looking because it is, sunlight would make it even better, but obviously, it depends on the scene.

Awesome video and info man. Im fairly new to video and would love to know how you painted out the mics, lights and boom poles. Can you explain a little?
@daniel.lopresti2 жыл бұрын
Only prob for me when relying on boom only mics (and particularly when they're really up close) is that it accentuates any slight movement of the interviewee, especially if they eg. lean forward (to pick up a glass of water) while speaking in a way that not just brings them further or closer to the mic (increased or decreased level) but brings them off axis to the directional mic which completely alters the frequency response, a much harder thing to fix. Of course then it's just a matter of instructing the subject on dos and donts.
@VinceMcLennon2 жыл бұрын
This can be negated to some degree by using a high quality cardioid mic instead of a razor sharp hyper cardioid shotgun. This will be much more forgiving, and shouldn't negatively affect noise levels in a controlled environment. (Also parallel compression in post)
@DontMakeMomCry2 жыл бұрын
@@VinceMcLennon I'm exploring this now. I've been jonesing to buy an MKH 50 since seeing ELM's video featuring it over a year back, but haven't made room in the budget. I had been considering testing a Sennheiser e614 (low cost super cardioid) but then ended up buying an e914, not realizing it's a regular cardioid pickup pattern. Just performed my first test yesterday...the 914 sounds fuller than my existing MKE600, though obviously doesn't offer the same noise rejection. -AW
@daniel.lopresti2 жыл бұрын
@@VinceMcLennon Makes sense! One particular case where I had that issue was actually using a cardioid small diaphragm condenser, but it was probably also due to the interviewee moving way too much :) Yep parallel compression can be really helpful and transparent, quite simple too with the mix knob on my outboard compressors! (Yep I come from the audio/music world..)
@daniel.lopresti2 жыл бұрын
@@DontMakeMomCry I'm not a production sound guy, but from what I've heard, "normal" cardioid is better for indoors, especially in close quarters, which makes sense since the more directional a mic is, the more the off-axis response is skewed ("coloured"), and probably introduces things like comb filtering, giving that boxy sound. The least directional pick-up pattern, the "ideal" omni-directional mic, picks up sound equally (ie. perfectly represents the source) from all directions.
@MyMomDrank2 жыл бұрын
That is the whole theory behind the 10-12 inches rule: at this distance from the mic subtle movements won’t affect the audio in a detrimental way. Someone speaking while leaning in 12 inches (to grab a glass of water or something) is a large distance, and will need cleanup in post. But the principals are the same when recording vocals for a song: pop filter 3-4 inches from mic, mouth another 4-6 inches from pop filter. If the vocalist moves around to help accent their vocal performance the audio level and EQ won’t drastically change. Him saying “as close as you can” presupposes you’ve already considered keeping it out of frame, and the distance would inherently mean at least 6” to keep proper headroom. This is why they use shotgun mics because you aim it at the chin and if distanced and leveled correctly it will catch far less of excessive noise… having something that isn’t directional defeats the purpose and cannot fathom how that would be less work in post. If you’re at a level where you’re shooting 3 cameras, 5 lights and multiple audio sources, you should be treating the area to control audio quality as well even if that means just hanging moving blankets and throwing one on the floor to reduce reflections.
