I always saw Maha Kali stepping on Shiva (IE Shiva stopping her killing rage) as an example of how a calm and centered man can help a woman to more effectively direct her more... fiery(?) energies. Since Shiva is also depicted as needing to be appeased by his wife Parvati, who is a different manifestation of Devi, trying to turn Kali into a more Parvati like 'character' (for lack of a better word) seems reductive and petty to me. Especially since it's Shiva who is interpreted to do so, it's almost an 'eye for an eye' situation.

It cheers me up when people are intimidated by Kali. Kali is the deity no Brahmins or Hindu clergy venerated to before Ramkrishno-Paramhans. Brahmins were the puppets of foreigners who exploited every other caste in Hinduism, all in the name of faith. Kali was the goddess who gave us Bengalis the strength to survive when our temples were razed, our population massacred all in the name of the Peaceful God. She is the symbol of defiance and resilience. Why shouldn't Arabs n Westerners be afraid of Kali? They killed millions to enforce their peaceful God. They destroyed culture, civilizations all in the name of religion. Kali is the strength of the weak and the terror of the sinned.

Thus, from the mistakes and experiences of history (and also the pure essences of the deeper meaning of the words that scriptures try to illuminate i.e. do to others as You would like them to do to You, and, forgiveness of Self and Others, and, love of Self and Others, and that We are forgiven and thus We need not judge Ourselves or Others, or hold onto any guilt at all); from this wisdom comes My litmus test for Divinity: 1 Divinity does not use fear to control (all forms of fear, including hell of course, are created by Human thoughts, words and actions that are not aligned with any Divine way), 2 Divinity always allows freedom of choice i.e. free will, 3 Divinity would never encourage Us to kill Other Humans, especially on behalf of Divinity Itself (evil exists in duality-reality to be opposite to good, to show Us the difference between light and dark as a lesson to Us and to allow free will for All, not just some, as it is a universal immutable law around Our Earth). Divinity always empowers Us (any and all experiences of connection and unity with The Divine leave Us enriched, or encouraged to be better, for the betterment of Self and All Others.) Now I realise 2 of these tenants go against the letter of the words of the bible, but only the words, and not the essence of it, which is to forgive, love and do unto others. This means that either I am wrong and Divinity is murderous, jealous and dictatorial, or that the words of the bible message have been manipulated to return to, and maintain, a fear-based, power-over-Others type of control, that was the controlling method in place and used by non-divine yet powerful kings and priests before and sadly also after the appearance of Jesus, and The Other Ascended Masters, who came to show Us the way... the way not of death but of forgiveness and life, of baptism which is Self-realization, and not of fear but of unconditional love.

Sri Ram and Krishna are claimed to be the avatars of Vishnu without presenting any evidence in the last 5000+ yrs. Majority of the Thugee were Muslims, they used Kali as some of Taquiya to gain confidence or practicer of both. They looted not because of poverty but in the name of Islam as they targeted only non-Muslims. Gosh!!! People have forgotten the BEATLE'S 1965 movie "HELP" was all about sacrificing a person to KALI, Ringo ended up wearing the "special" ring that whomever wears must be sacrificed, it got stuck on his finger... and then all kinds of hilarity... and outbursts of Beatles music ensues. I remember seeing it when I was in 5th grade and having no reference for this strange goddess. American culture in general had no reference point either. But the culture of England did.

I have to disagree with your assertion that Kali's foot touching Shiva evoking embarrassment is Patriarchal interpretation. You say yourself that all of the creatures of the World begged Shiva to STOP Kali's Rampage- to save them. She was destroying everything because she became overcome with bloodlust. Rather than employ violence to try and stop his Wife's Rampage (which would symbolize the Masculine dominating the Feminine), Shiva (Her Husband that She loves and is devoted to) instead lays himself down in her path of Destruction. I don't think the actions of the gang of thieves from the accounts were all that exceptionally brutal or outside the norm to not be believable. The Tantric practice of Abhichara promotes the mindset, and it's only Adharma if an "adept" of the path attempts to or kills, robs, or deceives another "adept". The unwitting are open game, and it can even be seen as awakening them by giving them the harmful experience. Overall an excellent presentation until it dissipates into political interpretations in the last few minutes. Seeking to co-opt a force as elemental as the image of Ma Kali into a post-modernist political narrative serves no one ultimately, ironically assuming a part in an otherwise far more sophisticated presentation. The story of her rampage and treading on Lord Shiva has a far deeper interpretation than to dismiss it as some aspect of patriarchy or embarrassment over someone or other’s gaze (how many times does the word ‘gaze’ need to get used anyway? Mythology - to say nothing of Divinity - exists on a far deeper strata of the human psyche - Western or Eastern - than ephemeral politics. The conclusion of this video is a sour compromise to the overall quality of the series arising from an unfortunate trend amongst the world’s educated who so widely feel the need to identify a perpetrator and a victim in every human interaction.
