Beautiful work. Great model, great posing and effective composition. And yes, I agree that the skin detail on some of the b/w images is blown out - probably metered as you would for Portra 400 but not all b/w films take overexposure as well as Portra. But it does not bother me, the images work fine as they are.

Great model and great composition!! Loved these images. I think the simple wardrobe was nice way to make sure the model was the focus of the images. I think I liked XP2 and Delta 400 the best but kind of hard to tell since each were slightly different conditions and don't know how development or editing was done. Overall Ilford films are fantastic! Would have loved to hear a little commentary from you though on which of the films you liked the best and why.

@@radicaleyemag, how do you plan for those double exposures? They look absolutely gorgeous.
@radicaleyemag5 жыл бұрын
@@romekk3975 When I compose each exposure i try to leave black or negative space to fill with the other shot. I think people often take two very similar images that often overlap too much, which can look odd. The easiest way to try this is to just ask your model to look in two different directions for each exposure!

Shots in the video, especially outside ones, developed a way to grayscaled rather than pure black and white. It takes quite some time for an amateur photographer to leave a telephoto lens behind his back, there are so much more beauty and magic in well composed wide angle shots. *Delta 100 and 400 are two films you'd ever need for portrait work. Ambient or strobe light, it will fit it all*

Hello! Lovely video, and lovely studio as well! Wanted to know if for the backdrop shots you only had a fixed light or was there flash involved as well?
@chrisperceval1934 жыл бұрын
Enjoyable video gents. Can I ask what the films were devved in? Most films have happier or less happy relationships with certain developers and I wondered if you had experimented here with that side of things. Interesting also to see your metering technique, esp outside. Back in the day we were always taught to angle the meter downwards, esp when using the dome so as not to inadvertently get too much light from the sky creeping in and thereby underexpose. The old adage of expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights! Overexposing to get something in the shadows but pulling the dev to stop the highlights blowing. Gives a nice flexible neg. You can still go all contrasty if you want but you have the choice. I know of some folks who go for 45 defgree angle of the meter, wind the some in (or use the flat attachment on the Sekonic flashmate) etc - on colour neg they overexpose by a stop as well! If you really want to test your metering technique shoot some E6 and stick the results on the light box... 1/3 of a stop this way or that really shows. Get good with that and you'll nail exposures with anything - digital or film (actually digital is quite fussy...) Have you printed any of the shots (from neg not scan?) I find scans can hide all manner of sins in the negative. You don't really get to know a film (and dev combo) until you have printed it in the darkroom. If the prints have been a dream to make or whether you have been wrestling to get anything decent out of some horrible negs - it gives useful insights. Commercial scans will hide all of that, the over and under exposure etc - they are trying to make it look good so you come back again! A home scanner will do a reasonable job of covering up problems. This applies for B&W and colour really.

Dear Flynn, this is such an awesome video. I always love the videos you do. Loved all the ones you did outdoors and appreciate your efforts behind this. All these have given me so much knowledge and aspiration for the analogue media and m still a student of the analog craft. I have nothing to really criticize or being rude about just want to share honest thoughts. One thing I would like to mention I felt prominently, please take it in a positive way that the studio lighting you did doesnt look appropriate for the subject, especially the kind of face the girl has, when you have a main source of light from the right, your LEDs from the left are killing the shadows in a bad way. And creating a bad shadow in the centre of the face. I feel the lighting could be massively improved and taken this shots to another level Please take my comments in a positive way 🙏 Keep up the good work and keep us inspired. Thanks @sumtrend
