Emile Durkheim, a pioneer of Sociology who lived in France during the 1800s, studied suicide and depression. One of his key finding was that there is an inverse relationship between depression/suicide and being relied upon. I.e. people who were caretakers, those who were providing for children, a spouse, a family member etc. were far less likely to experience depression or commit suicide. Lots of people today view freedom as being not relied upon. These people do not want to be "tied down" by this type of relationships. Its incredibly misguided in my opinion. Freedom is a much more complicated idea than simply not being restrained.

France, circa 1800: a patriarchal society that actively disincentivized education and financial independence for women. I’ll be Emile Durkheim published that paper right after attending the beheadjng at the town square at the guillotine before the appointment for his monthly blood letting…

Small note: Girl, you gotta mute your own audio in post when a guest is talking, you tend to add "mmhmm" after almost every sentence a guest says. It's totally normal, we want to subconsciously show our guest we are listening, engaged, and in agreement with them, but it's so distracting to hear as a listener.
