It's great to meet you here, in the (at least) virtual proximity of KZbin, after a long gap of 32 years, following those few daytime hours in which a not-yet six year old boy (just returned with his parents from abroad), who had unwittingly wandered into the half-open (?) door of a room at Hotel Geeth, TVM (where you, with others, were vibrantly engaged in project discussions) was taken into a marvellous trance ... there were stories, playful smiles, lots of fun talk (all by the same smartly energetic "uncle" who had seemingly jumped out of "Chiriyo chiri", "Karyam nissaram", "Ente Ammu ninte thulasi avarude chakki" etc. and had landed in front of me) and music ("Thaarakale Ambiliye" being played on an audio cassette player and you asking my opinion on the song stays very fresh in my mind)... The beautiful magic of that encounter which holds me in its spell to this moment is this sense of joyful and harmonious camaraderie... an expansive, unfettered alchemy of ideas from unknown spheres distilling into creative energies and artistry - a certain brightly-lit, sunny freedom of expression and playful interpersonal spirit that freely emanated from You. A chord was struck then, which has stayed in my being and lit it up during the rather uncommon moments in life of my “reaching out” to people, groups and avenues where I have felt an inspiring resonance - like a flood of uplifting light and cheerfulness. As such, without myself knowing it, I keep coming back to your movies, interviews and online articles (where I always seem to find some new inspiring perspective on life and self-identification) every once in a while, and to the lovely songs from your films (especially from the 80s, many of these songs being my very dear ones) with much more pervasive regularity (irrespective of the composer, almost all of them have a richly vibrant "soul" coming from a melodic universe that's instantly recognizable as bearing your signature... and of course, the numbers from Kuruppinte Kanakkupusthakam, Samantharangal and Krishna Gopalakrishna give mellifluous evidence to that sweet uniqueness). I'd often wondered as to where the source of that fascinatingly rich creative flow came from, and then I saw the interview for Kappa TV here on KZbin, where, along with other beautiful insights of sheer clarity, I heard you speak about your special bond with your mother (so radiant in the photo)... so that was it! For whatever reason, the brightly-lit clean effervescence of inner harmony and inspiration that you, your work and your words provide rejuvenates me and continues to provide me with an undefinable feeling of encouragement and inner buoyancy, especially in key moments of my life where self-doubt tries to slowly creep in (with "Ninne enthinu kollam?" questions), as I too try to "search for myself". .. ...And here we begin to meet again, even though virtually for now, with you being as radiant and rivetting as ever. Hopefully it will be for real someday, should you come visiting to this part of the world, or perhaps, when I get to come back to Kerala on vacations. With a long-pending smile of grateful affection back to the humane energy of that "uncle" who cheerfully took me into a magical space of inspiration, I shall duly find myself here on Fridays... My Dear Menon Marvelous presentation in the usual Balachandra Menon's punching style ! Impressive narration about childhood determination to be a Film Director. I really cherished some nostalgic memories especially about your kottarakara experience. Because I studied in that school and lived in the vicinity of the Ganapathy temple and had my basic swimming lessons in that temple pond. I would prefer to call it the kerala culture then than hindu culture as nobody bothered about hindu or muslim at that time. Hope to see the next edition soon
