Working my way through your vlogs again. I honestly didn’t think there was room for two boats to pass in that tunnel. It didn’t look very wide. Thank goodness you didn’t meet the other boat on one of those straight bends.
@FloatingOurBoat3 жыл бұрын
It is very close in the tunnels and I think many scratches happen passing other boats. Some tunnels are only one way and have timed entry.

Very good picking up the trash. I have wondered why other KZbin narrow boaters do not have one of those old peoples long grabbers and pick up the the trash floating in canals. With free trash collection at watering facilities and such I would think it would cost no more than a few trash bags. When I boat in Florida I pick up anything I see....because one day something will go flying out of my boat when going 33mph or 53 KpH. Thanks for the good example.

Fantastic to see you settling in and enjoying the boating life and the weather cooperating.I have been lucky enough to spend a lot of time on my boats as part of my business/recreation over the last 30+yrs, including the missus and me spending 7 months sailing the South Pacific and a couple of months cruising the French Canals on a barge and l still love my time on them.Even though they are a lot of work to up keep and l can confirm BOAT definitely stands for Bring Out Another Thousand, my love of boating still runs strong, my missus claims l still get cranky when away from them for too long ( l dont believe her), good luck with the rest of your cruising life;). The French Skippers we met on the canals there told us the Marina entrances are narrow to allow them to be blocked to keep water in the marina in case of canal damage/drainage and also to block the marina off if there was a problem inside the marina ie fire/oil/fuel spill etc and to minimize the wash from passing boats disturbing those moored inside.Remember the old salties saying " A good day on a boat adds 10 more to your life " .Give the dogs a pat from us in OZ

Nice to see you on 'my patch'! I half expected to see myself running, walking or cycling up the towpath! Briefly spotted the old toll house at Kings Norton junction - sadly now a burnt out wreck. The bridge over the guillotine lock has had a nice new paint job, though. The drawbridge by The Drawbridge pub is always causing problems, keys sticking, barriers broken, or the lift mechanism just breaking down completely. Hoping to become a CRT volunteer lockie at Aston soon...🤞 Meanwhile catching up on the vlogs, which I'm thoroughly enjoying👌 - I think it was Robbie Cumming that pointed me your way.👍

I'm a relatively new subscriber, having picked up on your channel from The Bald Explorer. I have started from the beginning and am finding is fascinating, I think this episode has been my favorite so far, maybe because it's spring. I was a boater here on the waterways of NSW for quite a few years, nowadays I only get out on the water by invitation. Boating here is VERY different from narrow boating, looking forward to more spring and summer boating. I am a POM but I shivered in your early episode when you said you had to get up in the middle of the night to put on more clothes.

The next time you tunnel and your better half feels cold send her below to make tea. She can warm her hands over the pot with the heat rising up over the pot. Might be a good idea to turn on three or four interior lights should one of you need to go below. Better to turn on a few lights that go bumpy bump in. The dark. Nice tunnel, Cheers

Rich can you enter the Lancaster Canal from all the other canals or is it blocked. I have been told it’s a very lovely canal with no locks. I’ll soon find out I will be over in 3 weeks traveling up it. I bet you both have lots of clean clothes to wear now don’t fight over who going to do the ironing.

I love your guys videos and you two are an amazing beautiful couple. I've got a question. Do narrowboatees use walky talkies or radios before going into tunnels? I think implementation radios on the canals would be a great benefit Cheers.
@JohnSecker5 жыл бұрын
We have walkie-talkies which we mostly use in locks, saves a lot of shouting against the sound of rushing water. But we also use them at narrows where there's only room for one boat - someone walks forward and calls the boat on when they reach the next passing point. But tunnels are different - certainly the longer ones. There are different methods used to avoid meeting another boat in the middle. At Harecastle on the Trent & Mersey, for example, there are tunnel keepers who stay in touch with their colleague at the other end, and send boats through in convoys, waiting until all the northbound boats have emerged before sending a southbound batch through. Further north on the T&M the Preston Brook tunnel works on a time window rule - you can only enter northbound between the hour and ten past, and southbound between the half hour and twenty to. Since it takes about fifteen minutes to go through you should never meet anyone. It can be really annoying if you just miss the window and have to moor up for 45 minutes. The Saltersford tunnel uses a similar rule but it's shorter so the windows are 20 minutes. And the Barnton tunnel is dead straight so you can see through - you have to look before you enter to see that no-one is already coming the other way. Then some tunnels are wide enough to pass another boat, like the one in this video. I am sure there are other tunnels with other ways of working we haven't met yet - this is a very old network and things have developed over the centuries in a bit of a random way. All part of the charm.

I think that was the first electrically operated bridge that we did. We waited for ages and then decided we'd do it anyway. The lights flashed, the cars kept coming. The barriers started to come down, the cars kept coming. When it touched a bonnet, the car decided that it was time to stop. Unfortunately, he then reversed which was probably a bad idea. Anyway, we took the boat through (going towards Kings Norton) and made a quick escape. The guys in the pub said it happened all the time.
