I once tried to say hello to Drew at a race. He spit on my bike shoes and then let the air out of my tires. He said, "This is Gravel Country!" and kicked my bike over.

I saw Drew at a Gravel Race in Kentucky yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for his race footage or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I rode away and continued with the race, and I heard him chuckle as I dropped off. When I finally made it back up to the front I saw him trying to take someone's Gu's out of their back pocket without asking. The other rider was very nice about it and professional, and was like “You can have a pouch just ask.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear them, but eventually handed the pouch back to them.

I have spent a lot of time the last year on the trainer, devouring hundreds of hours of primarily gravel footage. Nearly every video from DJ, VC, Kerry Werner, Joe Goettl, amongst countless others. I was pretty pumped to find Dillman’s page as he has good metrics, evaluations, and well made videos with fantastic music. That said, he’s the only social media person in the gravel content category where I’ve frequently thought “why was that ‘dig’ at the other rider necessary.” Then came the insanely awkward/excuse of how much money Lachlan must make and how that somehow transfers to dollar per race second or some weird fumbled comparison. Then came the jab at the U18 nationals pro for wearing his nationals jersey in another race “no, that’s not Keegan, not sure if I’d wear that bud” or some crap. Constant jabs about other riders bike handling skills. You can play under the guise that it’s “just a sense of humor” but honestly if that’s it, it’s just really insecure humor. Loved his “whoah, those aren’t UCI legal socks” or how so many videos he is blatantly not pulling with the justification he isn’t as fast. Sure, call it a race tactic, but imagine a race of all Dillmans. It’d never finish because every one would be stopped waiting for the next guy to pull. None of the comments offend me at all as they weren’t about me or relate to me. As a viewer I see the jabs as just being insecure with the guise of “humor” apparently and wonder why they’d be made often at the expense of strangers. I don’t normally watch bonkbros but saw this as a response to VC. I’ll continue enjoying all the killer content creators that I mentioned above, but it’s clear why Dillman has the reputation that’s been earned.

Right with ya Dylan! Really, really disappointed with the very few Ranchers who are haters of SBT. Adam: SBT does support the community, and the actual "impact" of the event on the haters is non-existent. I have ridden SBT 3 times, and there is almost zero traffic out there on the gravel roads. The vast majority of the Steamboat community is very supportive of the race, there are only a few "bad apples" here spoiling the batch. It really is a shame, as Amy and her team has done a ton of work to address the concerns of the ranchers. New Ridley ASTR for wide tires, specced to fit up to 52 mm tires.
@dannywhipple26332 ай бұрын
Having worked for many years in yampa Colorado I can confirm that ranchers hate cyclists. Steamboat is unique in the fact that many of these ranches have existed since the early 1800s. There is a strong tension between the wealth in steamboat compared to the historical ranches that kind of scrape by that is unique to this area. Leadville and Trinidad are different because the wealth divide isn’t so prominent. Steamboat ranchers hate these cyclists disrupting their workday. It’s an interesting tension since they don’t benefit in a way that is tactile to their daily lives.

As one who races in a few of those podunk races I was not offended as you are right there are no "big" races. We are down in South-Central Ky and we have a few races down here in the area. I will agree it is hard to get people to the races but "heck" not offended. Boondoggle Events tried a few gravel races but people just did not come so there are less but we do have what we call "All Road Championship" and it is a great course but again not a lot of people. It’s too bad about Steamboat. As someone who rides bikes and rodeo’s I know some of the ranchers. Keep in mind, not only do they not want the bike race they don’t want the town of Steamboat. On a serious note the race creates multiple hour long traffic issues and there are many more events every summer that have the same impact in addition to the race. That said it stinks no one was able to come up with a better solution. The new course was an attempt to solve some of the traffic issues.

Tough hand being dealt to Steamboat, this rejection of dirt road closures by local ranchers. But I'd suggest we let the promoters do their good work and not bad-mouth any locals. And big picture, lots of opposition to events and who knows why. Look at the Euro pros. They fly over here for two road races in Canada and nothing in the States, as if our scene is rinky-dink.

Hey guys, on Gravel Worlds... Additionally the course seems pretty lame, with a large amount of pavement, and it appears it has little terrain to make much of a selection. Seems like the UCI is trying to define gravel racing (courses) in a way which is very conducive to the current World Tour "star" riders winning the Rainbow stripes. And then there is the use of the road rankings to call up riders at the start, which is relatively unfair to riders who specialize in actual Gravel Racing (other than UCI Gravel Races).
@ervin71782 ай бұрын
The spirit of gravel is all about inclusivity, please stop being so elitist and accept that no matter the course world tour watts will beat Keegan. Also the course last year was tighter and more technical than many US gravel races that are just wide bumpy roads. but it’s in Belgium this years so idk if they have the terrain to make a course that isn’t lame.
@barrowsworm12262 ай бұрын
@@ervin7178 I am sorry, I guess I was not totally clear in my response, by no means am I under the illusion that Keegan Swenson is likely to beat someone like M. V-P in a gravel race! Although, of course, he did smoke Matej Mohoric at Unbound... My post was meant to illustrate that the UCI's version of "gravel" is flawed, IMO, and should be revised. A gravel race should be required to be at a minimum, 75% dirt/gravel surfaces to be worthy of a "World Championships"-this is not Strade Bianchi. The UCI's approach to gravel races seems to favor European style road racers, rather than gravel specialists, and I suspect this favoritism is purposeful. The fact that UCI gravel races use UCI points (mostly earned by UCI road racers in road races) to stage the start line is obviously unfair to gravel specialists, especially those who mainly race outside of Europe. At last years WC's, Keegan was staged way far back, like around 60th or something like that-he had a good race, and ended up 6th, beating many WT pros, including Wout V-A. Albeit, ultimately, if WT riders such as Wout and M. V-P were to concentrate on gravel, it is likely that they would dominate the discipline.
